Corseuil PPGI/UFSC/CNPq Neste primeiro número do volume 47 da Revista Estudos Anglo-Americanos – REAA, encontram-se dez artigos relacionados aos Estudos Linguísticos e Literários em contexto anglófono, os quais vêm enriquecer o debate acadêmico na grande área de Letras sob o viés da língua inglesa e de suas literaturas. O artigo que abre o presente volume volta-se aos Estudos Linguísticos ao apresentar, como tema central, o ensino e a aprendizagem de inglês na idade adulta. Neste artigo, intitulado “Ensino personalizado de inglês para adultos”, Ana Lígia Barbosa de Carvalho e Silva aborda o ensino e a aprendizagem da língua inglesa na idade adulta e busca propor um ensino personalizado de inglês como segunda língua (L2), voltado para as necessidades e especificidades de aprendizes adultos, envolvendo aspectos afetivos, com ênfase na motivação. No artigo, a autora conclui que dificuldades de aprendizagem de L2 por adultos podem ser superadas, se consideradas as especificidades e necessidades desses aprendizes. Já dentro da área dos Estudos Literários e Culturais, o artigo “Raymond Carver e os discursos sobre o amor”, de autoria de Genilda Azerêdo e Isabor Meneses Quintiere, apresenta uma leitura crítica sobre a representação do amor enquanto sentimento complexo e, ao mesmo tempo, inspirador na escrita de Raymond Carver. Levando em consideração o conto “What we talk about when we talk about love”, Azerêdo e Quintiere discutem as tensões do discurso amoroso apontadas por Carver em seu famoso texto. A representação de temas como inocência, raça, classe e religião permeia a discussão apresentada por Renata Gonçalves Gomes no artigo “Innocence, race, class and religion in J.D. Salinger’s ‘Down At The Dinghy’ (1949): An analysis in perspective”. Neste artigo, Gomes 6 analisa, de forma comparativa, um dos contos de Salinger sobre personagens da família Glass, demonstrando de que forma esta e outras histórias do autor deixam transparecer a crítica social feita por Salinger ao contexto estadunidense pós-Segunda Guerra mundial. Ainda enfatizando o contexto social e político dos Estados Unidos no século XX, o artigo “Músicas norte-americanas de protesto: uma análise dialógica”, de autoria de Annemeire Araujo de Lima, discute, a partir da concepção bakthiniana de texto, as muitas vozes que compõem um grande número de músicas de protesto estadunidenses. Lima propõe, neste artigo, que é justamente através da representação de vozes advindas de diversos contextos sociais que as músicas analisadas no artigo articulam a complexidade do tema de protesto nos Estados Unidos. Uma análise de questões políticas também se faz presente no artigo “Crime político e deflagração do mal: uma leitura de Macbeth, de William Shakespeare”, de Mayquel Eleuthério. Tomando a tragédia Macbeth como cenário investigativo, Eleuthério discute a organização hierárquica e teológica da sociedade elisabetana, a fim de verificar a centralidade do crime político no texto de Shakespeare. Já no artigo “Claire Archer: a tragic heroine on the verge”, Avital Grubstein de Cykman discute de que forma a protagonista Claire Archer, da peça The Verge, escrita por Susan Glaspell, enquadra-se na definição de heroína trágica. Ancorando-se no debate crítico feminista promovido por autoras como Deborah J. Lyon e Jennifer L. Larson, de Cykman analisa a trajetória da protagonista acima mencionada, atualizando, assim, o conceito de heroína trágica. Uma abordagem crítica informada pelos estudos feministas também se faz presente no artigo “‘Ain’t that the same?’: intersectionality and the supplements in Toni Morrison’s Sula”, de autoria de Dayane Evellin de Souza Francisco. Neste artigo, Francisco analisa um trecho do famoso romance de Morrison sob o viés da interseccionalidade e da desconstrução. Ao discutir 7 o conceito de “suplemento”, Francisco também demontra de que forma o romance expõe noções de gênero como sendo socialmente construídas. Já no artigo “O entre-lugar representado na obra Call Me María, de Judith Ortiz Cofer”, de Rosiane Pereira Gonçalves Boina, questões identitárias e de gênero são discutidas a partir da experiência migratória e dos trânsitos geográficos. Amparada pelas discussões teóricas de Homi Bhabha e Silviano Santiago, Boina apresenta uma leitura crítica da obra de Cofer tendo em vista os conceito de “terceiro espaço” e “entre-lugar” a fim de problematizar a complexidade das relações identitárias apresentadas na obra. A relação entre autobiografia e ficção se faz presente no artigo “O elemento autobiográfico na obra de Philip Roth: breve panorama”, de Isadora Goldberg Sinay. Neste artigo, Sinay enfatiza a chamada fase autobiográfica da escrita de Roth, a qual engloba a publicação de cinco livros nos quais o próprio escritor protagoniza as histórias. Ao abordar os elementos autobiográficos na obra de Roth, Sinay procura também elaborar uma análise crítica sobre o papel da metaficção para o escritor. Fechando o presente número, o artigo “To kill or not to kill: images of violence and cruelty in Band of Brothers”, de autoria de Ketlyn Mara Rosa e Janaina Mirian Rosa, apresenta uma análise fílmica sobre a representação da violência, particularmente no contexto de guerra, na série Band of Brothers, de 2001. Para as autoras, a série, ao concentrar-se nos efeitos dos atos de violência vivenciados pelos soldados durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, retrata o caráter fantasmagórico e traumático do passado sendo constantemente revisitado. Considerando as diferentes e relevantes temáticas apresentadas, este número da Revista Estudos Anglo-Americanos deve trazer importante reflexão para a área de Estudos Linguísticos e Estudos Literários. Os Editores 8 ENSINO PERSONALIZADO DE INGLÊS PARA ADULTOS Ana Lígia Barbosa de Carvalho e Silva Universidade Estadual de Campinas - Unicamp RESUMO: O ensino e a aprendizagem da língua inglesa na idade adulta constituem o tema central deste artigo, que tem por objetivo fazer uma revisão de literatura sobre o assunto e propor um ‘ensino personalizado’ de inglês como segunda língua (L2), voltado para as necessidades e especificidades dos aprendizes. A inquietação que motivou este trabalho surgiu de posicionamentos negativos recorrentes, que parecem habitar o senso comum, sobre o aprendizado de inglês por adultos. Discorremos sobre a aquisição de L2, bem como sobre as principais características do aprendiz, nesse mesmo contexto. Abordamos também alguns dos aspectos afetivos que impactam na aprendizagem na idade adulta, com ênfase na motivação. Verificamos, por fim, que as possíveis dificuldades de aprendizagem de L2 por adultos podem ser superadas, desde que a abordagem de ensino considere as idiossincrasias e necessidades desses aprendizes. As questões suscitadas neste artigo poderão ser úteis na elaboração de cursos e material didático, bem como na formação de professores para o ensino específico de inglês para adultos. Unfolding Verse: Poetry As Correspondence In Early Modern England Abstract This project recovers a forgotten history of Renaissance poetry as mail. At a time when trends in English print publication and manuscript dissemination were making lyric verse more accessible to a reading public than ever before, writers and correspondents created poetic objects designed to reach individual postal recipients. Drawing on extensive archival research, “Unfolding Verse” examines versions of popular poems by John Donne, Ben Jonson, Mary Wroth, and others which look little like “literature.” Rather, these verses bear salutations, addresses, folds, wax seals, and other signs of transmission through the informal postal networks of early modern England. Neither verse letters nor “epistles,” the textual artifacts I call “letter-poems” proclaim their participation in a widespread social

    EXPLORING THE ANIMAL TURN THE ANIMAL EXPLORING EXPLORING THE ANIMAL TURN Animals´ omnipresence in human society makes them both close to and yet Human-Animal Relations in Science, Society and Culture remarkably distant from humans. Human and animal lives have always been entangled, but the way we see and practice the relationships between humans and animals – as close, intertwined, or clearly separate – varies from time to time and between cultures, societies, and even situations. By putting these complex relationships in focus, this anthology investigates the ways in which human society deals with its co-existence with animals. The volume was produced within the frame of the interdisciplinary “Animal Turn”-research group which during eight months in 2013–2014 was hosted by the Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies, Lund university, Sweden. Along with invited scholars and artists, members of this group contribute with different perspectives on the complexities and critical issues evoked when the human-animal relationship is in focus. ABBISS ii ABSTRACT This project analyses six period drama productions in British television of the 2010s, expanding Claire Monk’s term of ‘post-heritage’ into a critical framework. Its case studies establish a cycle of progressive representations of the past in recent television drama, which operate against the assumptions of ‘heritage’ nostalgia forwarded by earlier scholars. The post-heritage framework consists of five guiding elements: interrogation, subversion, subjectivity, self-consciousness and ambiguity. These inform the analysis of the project’s case studies, while also allowing the existence of post-heritage elements to be recognised in earlier period drama productions. The thesis is split into three distinct parts, which allow the heritage and post-heritage elements of the case studies to be associated with the characteristics and theoretical concepts of television drama. The first chapter of each part evaluates the institutional context of its case study, identifying its impact upon production through textual examples from the programme. The second chapter of each part focuses on close analysis, demonstrating the extent to which post- heritage elements can assist innovation in television drama. Part I focuses on televisual style, identifying the naturalist, realist and modernist aesthetics of television drama. Scholarly sources are used to connect these with periods of British television history.
