BOUGHN: Good morning, everyone. 20 Attached is a list of the names of the voting 21 members of the 2010 NATCA Convention, and their 22 alternates, that were registered up until 8:45 this 23 morning, September 13, 2010. 24 As of right now, there are 356 delegates, 113 25 alternates, representing a total of 13,198 votes. Under the convention rules, the regions will 7 be taken in alphabetical order, starting with the region 8 after Southern. Southern will go last. 9 SPEAKER: Point of information, mike one. 10 MR. Chris Boughn, the Chair, will 8 deliver the report. 9 MR. BOUGHN: We thought we owed an explanation 10 for what happened with the roll call this morning. When 11 we do the report, it's a snapshot of where we are right 12 then. And what happens during sessions, and in between 13 sessions is, people are checking in, they're checking 14 out, so the numbers will fluctuate throughout the 15 convention. They will start out low, then they're going 16 to build up, and then they're going to start going back 17 down. 18 But there were some problems that we discovered, 19 and I want to thank Mr. McGowan, and my friend Jim 20 Marinitti, for helping us find the problems, which we 21 did. And, what happened was, one of us neglected to hit 22 the check-in button when you checked in, and for ten of 23 you, we forgot to do that. And for one of you, I think 24 it was San Francisco, we accidentally checked you out of 25 the convention. CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00012 1 (Applause.) 2 MR. BOUGHN: We'll take the full hit. 3 The problem with Region X happened in the data 4 base, it was "R-X." When we printed out the report, the 5 report was set up to look for just "X" by itself, so it 6 rejected all the "R-Xs" so that's why they weren't 7 initially printed. 8 And then we had 19 facilities in there which had 9 the wrong regional identifier. Not the wrong facility 10 identifier, but the wrong regional identifier. Somebody 11 put in for, like Eastern Region, NEA, or NEN, or 12 something like that, so it was off a little bit, so when 13 we did the report, it didn't come up. 14 Our goal is to err on the side of giving you and 15 your members their votes that they deserve. If you see 16 something, you hear something, it happens, speak up and 17 we will fix it. Now, hopefully, since the roll call vote 18 that we had this morning -- it worked smoothly after we 19 fixed all those problems. 20 So I want to thank you for your patience on 21 that. Mr. Marinitti, you helped us out tremendously. 22 We've gone through it during the lunch period with a fine 23 tooth comb, and hopefully it's all correct now. 24 On the air conditioning question, we will take 25 responsibility for that. (808) 532-0222 00013 1 convention, but only this one. 2 Attached is a list of names of the voting 3 members of the 2010 NATCA convention, and their 4 alternates, who have been registered up until 2:00, on 5 Monday, September 13, 2010. To the best of our ability 6 and our knowledge, there are 369 delegates, 114 7 alternates, representing a total of 14,607 votes. It's 8 1,000 difference for the Region X, okay, that's why it's 9 gone up 1,000. 10 On behalf of the Committee, I move that the roll 11 of delegates hereby submitted be the official roll of the 12 voting members of the convention at this time. 13 MR. KRASNER: Thank you, Chris. 14 And, we do appreciate what you are doing. It's 15 unfortunate that some of this stuff comes up when we are 16 not in the heat of battle. We did commit to finish up this 9 issue by way of motion to do so. 10 And then, after that, we will switch to the 11 Resolutions book. We will hopefully get to all of them, 12 but it will actually give us the ability to bounce back 13 and forth between amendments and resolutions, and try to 14 hit both sides of it. 15 And, just so you all know, generally when you 16 postpone consideration, you put it on the table exactly 17 the way it was, but the line-up at the microphones, we 18 have no way of knowing or remembering what that was, so 19 we thought the easiest way was to pretend there was no 20 one at the microphones. 21 So, if you wish to debate it, feel free to get 22 up. It 5 was a tough time, and I forgot to thank you all, because 6 you stood together when it would have been easy to fall 7 apart. 8 To say that Paul and Trish have worked to unify 9 this Union is like calling Michelangelo just a painter. 10 They have done so much more than that, in such a short 11 amount of time, that they have literally taken fractures 12 and made them whole like that globe, in ten months. 13 That's astounding. 14 They never, ever gave up on unifying all of us, 15 from the famous to the infamous. 16 Every single person in this room works just as 17 hard as every single person on this stage, we just lucked 18 into a different gig. But your families are home alone 19 right now, and your kids are wondering when you are going 20 to get a job in your own town; and your friends wonder 21 why you are not hanging around anymore. And it's because 22 you're here. And that's hard, it's really hard. But I 13 can tell you that the trust, and the honor, and the 14 integrity with which Paul and Trish have led this union 15 have restored my faith, for one thing, and they have 16 honored me beyond what I deserve, and greater than I had 17 any dream or hope of seeing. 18 And I have told them this both personally, and I 19 have told many of you this directly: They have so much 20 more class than I would have had, that it just humbles me 21 to see them work the way they work. And you should be 22 extraordinarily proud, and, quite frankly, awed by the 23 things that they have been able to do in the short time 24 that they have been in office. 25 I can't wait for the next two years. ZILONIS: Brothers and sisters, it's an 23 honor and privilege to introduce this next speaker. He's 24 been a pillar of strength and leadership in our 25 organization since the very beginning. He is a gentleman CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00031 1 who has always lived on the front lines. 2 Before starting his career as a controller at 3 Chicago O'Hare Tower in 1968, he served in the Army's 4 125th ATC Company in Vietnam. He was also assigned to 5 the 101st Airborne, and First Infantry, setting up 6 landing and drop zones. 7 At that time he purchased a monkey named Johnny, 8 to protect him. His reasoning: A man who sleeps in the 9 jungle with a monkey tied to his wrist cannot be snuck up 10 on by even the Invisible Man. 11 This activist tenacity and ethical nature have 12 defined his involvement in Organized Labor for more than 13 three decades. He waged a seven-year fight to overturn 14 his forced medical disability retirement. After the 15 birth of his daughter, Anna, he discovered he had been 16 contaminated with Agent Orange in Vietnam. 17 During the fight to get his job back, he learned 18 enough about the law to become a very savvy negotiator, 19 and he used that to his advantage throughout his career 20 with NATCA. 21 After the FAA reinstated him in 1984, as if he 22 never left the agency, he did not intend to reenlist in 23 the Labor Movement. But after returning and finding the 24 conditions of employment within the FAA, he decided to 25 keep up the good fight. CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00032 1 He was drawn to major leadership positions in 2 NATCA during the early years of the Union's existence. 3 He served as the Great Lakes Regional Representative from 4 1988 to 1991. That year he won election as the Union's 5 Executive Vice President with 60 percent of the vote, and 6 served alongside President Barry Krasner until 1994. 7 When he returned to O'Hare Tower and TRACON, he 8 assumed leadership roles that included multiple terms. 9 His later service as FacRep came earlier this decade, 10 when they called upon his experience and wisdom to lead 11 them through the difficult times of the White Book. 12 In the end, his lasting love remains air traffic 13 control. He was thrilled to receive a special gift after 14 leaving a hospital after a serious illness. It was from 15 none other than Mayor Richard Daly. It was a picture of 16 his beloved tower. 17 Right now, the old timers, when they say, I 18 worked in the old tower, point to the building over by 19 the O'Hare Hilton. This tower only resides in a few rare 20 pictures. 21 The FAA's director once remarked of our 22 speaker's height -- which is five foot-four -- the longer 23 he talks, the taller he gets. 24 I will now yield the floor to a mentor, a friend 25 and a brother. I was 3 also the very first member of PATCO, and was 4 developmental in O'Hare in 1968. 5 One of the things you get to do when you come to 6 a convention is, you get to find out little things that 7 you would never know. What I am about to tell you is 8 kind of retribution -- but, sorry, Barry, I got to do it. 9 One of the stories that's true, that nobody 10 knows, is that when Barry and I were traveling, we had 11 been on a very long -- I think we were gone two weeks, 12 trying to organize. 13 And, after visiting about five facilities, and 14 we were dead tired, and the airplanes weren't going 15 anywhere through the storms, and that. We didn't have 16 cell phones back then, and those that did, there weren't 17 very many cell towers. 18 So, we were sitting there and Barry leans back 19 against the wall, pulls his knees up, he puts his head 20 back, and he goes, my God, this has been a long trip, 21 little buddy. And I said, yeah, it has been. And he 22 says, I miss Sallie so much -- and now I am feeling 23 really bad. And I said, well, hey, man, it's almost 24 over, we are going to be home pretty soon. And he says, 25 but I miss her so much. CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00034 1 And he gets up from the wall, lights a 2 cigarette, and I could see the sadness in his face. And 3 then I said, Barry, man, take it easy, it ain't that bad. 4 And he looks at me and he goes, no, I'm not sad. We have 5 been away so long, I just can't remember who ties who up! 6 (Laughter.) 7 MR. BELLINO: So, he got me. And now, 25 or so 8 years later, I get to suck him right in on that one. 9 (Laughter.) 10 MR. BELLINO: I would like to thank Paul, Trish, 11 the National Executive Board, because rather than chisel 12 our names from the towers' history, from NATCA's history; 13 rather than forget that we exist, and move on; they chose 14 to invite us to have a place at the table, and as with 15 RNAV, as with contacting me and others, and asking us to 16 be a part of the organization again. 17 25-30 years ago, when we were forming this 18 Union, we used to say, the one thing we need, the one 19 thing we don't have, is institutional memory. 20 Institutional memory. And now we have a whole bunch of 21 it, and there's been only one president, and one vice 22 president, and one National Executive Board, who chooses 23 to retrieve that institutional memory. BELLINO: We're here today not only to meet 2 as a convention, but to meet as a Family, a most 3 cherished Family. 4 Many of you will look at me and say, cherished 5 Family? Give me a break. "Cherish" is the word I choose 6 because, like a family, we have been together in the 7 worst of times, and the best of times. We fight each 8 other. We love each other. And we always support each 9 other. We call each other Brother and Sister because, in 10 reality, it's not just a union name, hey, Brother, but 11 it's a reality. We are Brothers and Sisters in a 12 dysfunctional family that they call the FAA. 13 And, at our facilities, we have developmentals, 14 trainers, whatever you want to call 'em. They are either 15 younger or they are newer than you. And like all older 16 brothers and sisters, we take our younger brothers and 17 sisters and we ignore them, and we pay no attention to 18 what they say. 19 But the one thing that we do is, we protect 20 them. We protect them from the dysfunctional few that we 21 know as managers. Managers at our facilities are the men 22 and women that the American people place as guardians of 23 the air traffic control system. Nothing could be further 24 from the truth. 25 The people who are managers run our family, as CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00036 1 in all other dysfunctional families, with their own self 2 interests. But, just as Paul and Trish have been saying, 3 the issue has never been the FAA; the issue is us. We 4 have to take care of each other as a Family, as a 5 cherished Family. 6 And, in the word "cherish" I want you to think 7 of it in a different light, then maybe you'll understand 8 why I use it. 9 I cherish our Family like I cherish my freedom, 10 I cherish my Country, and I cherish my Union. And in so 11 doing, if you consider it in the same light, and if you 12 consider that we are family, with little brothers and 13 sisters, sibling rivalry, and disfunctional parents whose 14 only interest is checking a box and moving forward, 15 you'll realize that what we are, we are the family -- 16 like many dysfunctional families, we are the ones that 17 make it work. We are the only ones that make it work. 18 And the only time you really get news headlines 19 is when our dysfunctional guardians pay close attention 20 to what we're doing, and they come in and they disrupt 21 our lives. Having nothing to do with air traffic, having 22 nothing to do with what they believe in, but having to do 23 with disrupting our family. 24 So I want you to understand that the people who 25 are your guardians, the FAA managers, have one goal in CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00037 1 mind, and that is to be promoted up and up the ladder. 2 Air traffic has nothing to do with it. Safety has 3 nothing to do with it. And we are the only family that 4 matters in keeping the skies safe, and to fulfill the 5 mission of the FAA. 6 Now, I joined the FAA September 12th, 1968, at 7 O'Hare. And, when I look back on that, I can see that 8 with the agency nothing has changed. But the only things 9 that have changed with the agency is, they have smarter 10 children than they have to -- not "children," but you 11 understand what I mean. In their family, we are smarter. 12 We take our time. We learn from what happened with 13 PATCO. We know that they can fire us all. 14 My last day was April Fools Day, 2008, and I 15 left with no warm memories of the FAA. But I left with 16 thousands of memories of my cherished NATCA Family. 17 I see you here, and some I have seen for 30 18 years. Some I have just met since I have been here these 19 last couple days. And from the ones that I have known 20 for 30 years, to the ones I met today, I feel as if they 21 are my family. 22 We all have the same blood running through our 23 veins, the same fire burning in our bellies, and I am so 24 thankful for that. 25 (Applause.) CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00038 1 MR. BELLINO: In 1968, the only thing the FAA 2 cared about the American people was safety and 3 expediency. The 71-1065 was a pamphlet that nobody paid 4 any attention to. Now, you must follow it or you will be 5 disciplined, but if you follow it, you will be 6 disciplined. 7 (Laughter.) 8 MR. BELLINO: And that is the way the FAA has 9 evolved. For years, for as long as I can remember, we 10 have asked Congress to resolve the issue. It's illegal 11 to go by the book, and yet you will be suspended and put 12 on the street if you don't. 13 That is a question, that is a dilemma that we 14 must have resolved. We can work it any way they want. 15 We, as a family, will cooperate together, and move in one 16 mass, to give the FAA exactly what they want. And when 17 they throw the book at you, read it. 18 And, what we have to do as a family is continue 19 to March in unison. Continue to forget about everything 20 else. It is not the FAA that's the issue, it's our 21 family, and these people that you've met will be in your 22 family until the day you die. 23 In 1968, the tower was 50 feet high. And I am 24 so proud that Mayor Daly gave me that picture of that 25 50-foot-high tower. CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00039 1 There were 522 air traffic facilities. Today 2 there are far fewer. We have to stand together because, 3 otherwise, they will take our brothers and sisters and 4 break apart our family, continuing to separate our family 5 more and more and more. And the only way that we can 6 fight the separation from our siblings is through 7 combined effort, lawful effort; learn their rules better 8 than they know 'em, and work together, to work with 9 Congress, to stay together as a family. Don't let them 10 tear us apart. 11 I don't have much more to say. I only want to 12 say that -- well, I do want to tell you one story. I 13 have to tell the story, but I will make it brief. One 14 more. 15 We used to go to an FAA facility, and at most 16 towers they had cipher locks that were hidden. And, with 17 those cipher locks, you put your fingers in it and you 18 punch in -- and everybody knew that they used the 19 reciprocal runways, you know, 18-3-6, stuff like that. 20 So, at first, when we would go there, they 21 wouldn't let us in. And when we knocked on the door, 22 they said, sorry, no visitors today. 23 So, what we would do is get there about 5:00 in 24 the morning. First we'd try the runway configuration. 25 Then variations of the runway configuration. If that CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00040 1 didn't work, what we would do is, we would take Secret 2 powder fresh deodorant spray, and we would spray in the 3 cipher lock. And then we would go back and we would sit 4 in our car, and we would wait until two or three of the 5 early shift came in to open the tower. 6 And then we would walk up, take a look in the 7 cipher lock, and, yes, I did have to get on my tiptoes 8 most of the time, and when you looked at the cipher lock 9 you would see the buttons they pushed, because the powder 10 fresh grey would be moved, and we would know what it is. 11 And then we would go in. And we'd walk in, and 12 they usually have the FAA manager's picture planted 13 firmly in the lobby. So the first thing the supervisor 14 would say when they came in is, how the hell did you guys 15 get in here? And whatever that picture looked like, we'd 16 describe him and say, yeah, this guy, he is about this 17 high, with black hair, and -- I don't know, a little dark 18 complected. And then they'd let us in. We got into so 19 many facilities that way... 20 (Laughter.) 21 MR. BELLINO: But I just wanted to say that we, 22 as a Family, they want to tear us apart. Don't let 'em 23 do it. We are a Union Family. We are a cherished 24 Family. And the only way the FAA can harm us is if we 25 allow them to tear us apart. KRASNER: Thank you, Joseph. 4 Over the course of the three days, we have a lot 5 of speakers, and we all have somebody introduce them 6 that's very important to them, important to the person 7 that's introducing them. 8 On this particular one, Paul and Trish were 9 gracious enough to let me do the introduction myself, 10 which I don't often get to do. I am going to try to get 11 through this, but it's going to be tough. 12 Our next individual who is up here was hired by 13 Randy Schmidt, when he was the Regional Vice President 14 for the Southern Region, and he was hired as a part-time 15 LR specialist. He had just come to us pretty much battle 16 scarred from the Eastern debacle, where he had walked the 17 Union lines, and he got fired as a result of Eastern 18 being dismantled. 19 And, when I came to D.C. as president, we were a 20 smaller union then, and our dues structure was a lot 21 smaller, and one of the first things on my mind was that, 22 oh my god, Randy hired somebody from the Southern Region. 23 What if all nine regions want an LR specialist? How are 24 we going to be able to handle that? We obviously can't 25 do that. CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00042 1 So I called up Bob and said, I need you to come 2 up to D.C. and talk with me. He came and we went out to 3 lunch, and we took a couple bottles of wine, and I made 4 him an offer he couldn't refuse -- I think so, anyway -- 5 and he finally agreed to move to Washington and join the 6 National Office Staff. And he's been a part of NATCA 7 ever since, going full time in D.C. 8 And, as the organization grew, Bob grew with us, 9 and his responsibilities changed to fit the needs of 10 NATCA. And, over the course of the next two decades, at 11 one point he was in charge of the litigation arm of our 12 organization. And, quite frankly, he was one of the 13 finest litigators I ever met. Even if he lost one case 14 in all the cases he did, it would have been a lot. 15 He served as our Director of Labor Relations, 16 he served as our Director of Training, at one time he 17 served as Director of Contract Enforcement, at another 18 time he served as Director of Boat Training on contract 19 enforcement. He's probably partially trained half the 20 reps in this room, in basic arbitration, advanced 21 arbitration, in basic FacRep, in advanced FacRep. 22 And, in addition to that, since 1998, he served 23 with me on every single contract that I have ever done, 24 he was there with me the whole time. 25 Even beyond that, when we brought in Cherry CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00043 1 Point Naval Air Station, and when we brought in the 2 private tower, then Bob went out there and he negotiated 3 their contracts. Every segment that came into the NATCA 4 Family, Bob was there for 'em at all times. 5 Over the years -- I don't even remember anymore, 6 Bob, it's been close to 20 years -- Bob's been my friend, 7 he's been my confidant, he's been my roommate, we've 8 shared apartments together. He's probably touched a 9 piece of every one of us. And even now, having decided 10 to retire this year, he still works for us as a contract 11 employee, doing training, doing contract negotiations. 12 And while he goes back to St. Louis, where he lives, and 13 he does it part-time, he still doesn't let go of his 14 family. 15 Would you please join me in raising a hand to 16 welcome Bob Taylor. 17 (Mr. Taylor approached.) 18 (Standing ovation.) 19 MR. TAYLOR: Brothers and sisters, colleagues, 20 and invited guests, I am honored and privileged to speak 21 before you today. 22 Right before I went to work for Eastern Airlines 23 and got elected as a full-time union rep, and right 24 before they locked the employees out -- something like 25 you went through with the White Book -- they terminated CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00044 1 people, gave them discipline like crazy, and sent people 2 home. They fired like 500 people in less than a year. 3 So they went through a lot. 4 They locked out the employees of Eastern 5 Airlines. There was 12,000 of them. I saw eight 6 suicides. I saw one gentleman, who couldn't get a job 7 because he was an ex-union person, who hung himself in 8 his garage, and pinned a note to himself that said, I 9 failed my family because I couldn't find work. 10 I saw grown men cry because they couldn't feed 11 their families. I went to WV coal mines and raised 12 money. Our theme was to adopt a striker to help people 13 pay their electric bills, their groceries, etc. 14 So, when they finally shut the doors, the strike 15 was over with, they filed bankruptcy, Randy went to 16 AFL-CIO looking for a person to do arbitrations. I 17 interviewed for the job, and got the job, and it's been a 18 great ride ever since. 19 When I retired, Paul and Trish wanted to throw 20 a party for me, and said I touched a lot of lives in my 21 18 and a half years. I said, would you please bring me 22 to the convention to let me say thank you? And they 23 said, absolutely. 24 (Applause.) 25 MR. TAYLOR: I want to share with you just a CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00045 1 couple stories. I walked a picket line one time, and I 2 took my son there, in Atlanta, and there was a manager 3 out there watching. And I said, Brian, that's what a 4 scab looks like. The manager turned around and found a 5 sympathetic judge, and said, Bob Taylor, on the picket 6 line, threatened to kill me. So I got locked up. They 7 took me down to the county jail. 8 But I never saw the inside of the jail, because 9 all the jailers were striking machinists, and they 10 weren't about to put me in that jail! 11 That's true! 12 (Laughter.) 13 MR. TAYLOR: Another example that was kind of 14 horrendous, I was walking a picket line in Kansas City, 15 and a carload of thugs pulled up, jumped out of the car 16 and pushed me through a plate glass window. My back was 17 sore for a while, but we survived that. Soon the strike 18 was over with, and Lorenzo was the new owner of Eastern. 19 He has been forever barred from getting involved in 20 aviation again. 21 I would like to add one more comment about 22 Randy. At the same time -- thank you to Paul, Trish and 5 the Executive Board -- they offered me a position as a 6 consultant contractor, and I'm having a good time. It's 7 a good ride, and I can stay in touch with all the 8 brothers and sisters out here. I have a lot of friends 9 in this audience. There are some new people here that I 10 don't know yet, but I know the majority of you. 11 After 18 and a half years, you build close 12 relationships, not just acquaintances. You laugh, argue, 13 cry, and you get back together, and you are still family. 14 In all the contact teams I served on, boy did we do that. 15 We worked long hours, thanks to Barry. We worked 16 weekends, thanks to Barry. We didn't go home for two 17 weeks, thanks to Barry. I am proud to say you are my 18 brothers and sisters, along with everybody else here. 19 (Applause.) 20 MR. TAYLOR: I want to thank the previous 21 officers for all their hard work and dedication and 22 leadership that has led to a better way of life for our 23 brothers and sisters at large. 24 Thank you for letting me tag along all these 25 years, it's been a great ride. I love Phil. Don't we love Phil? Yes, we do. 5 (Laughter.) 6 MR. TAYLOR: At one point in time, we were doing 7 the engineer contract negotiations, and I was chief 8 negotiator, and I went to our contract team and said, I 9 would like to bring Barry on board with us. They didn't 10 know who he was. They were brand new to the organization 11 and didn't really know what Barry was all about, and what 12 he could do for us. 13 So when Barry agreed to come on the contract 14 team with me, he said he'd do it on only one condition: 15 I can't -- (inaudible). So I have been second-seating 16 him for the last 18 years or so? Oh, boy. 17 (Laughter.) 18 MR. TAYLOR: I have to tell you a story about 19 Phil, and to anybody offended by this, I apologize in 20 advance. 21 A 1998 contract team had this thing going on 22 where they liked to kiss, and they liked to put their 23 tongue where it doesn't belong. So Joe Fruscella, the 24 Eastern Region RVP at the time, had a wager going on that 25 Phil, on a particular night, would kiss me, and do the CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00048 1 tongue thing. 2 (Laughter.) 3 MR. TAYLOR: So I sent word back, and I said, if 4 he does that, he better have a spare tongue, because I am 5 going to own the one he's got! 6 (Laughter.) 7 MR. TAYLOR: Anyway, I forget how much the wager 8 was, but I refused to show up. And what they did was, 9 they had a room pre-assigned to me, and they took the 10 screens off my windows, and you couldn't lock my door. 11 So, Barry got them to call it off, and they did call off 12 the bet. 13 Thank you Barry, thank you, Phil. 14 (Laughter.) 15 MR. TAYLOR: One thing that I am very proud of, 16 besides being a delegate at the Tampa convention, is 17 being a lifetime NATCA member. I will cherish that the 18 rest of my life, for sure. I was there with Victor 19 Santore, when he did his first arbitration. I was there 20 with Barry when he met with John Sweeny, President of 21 AFL-CIO. And we were the last union that had direct 22 affiliation with the AFL-CIO. 23 (Applause.) 24 MR. TAYLOR: I was there when Barry and I closed 25 a deal worth $200 million. It was huge! It turned out CARNAZZO COURT REPORTING COMPANY, LTD. (808) 532-0222 00049 1 to be a lot bigger, didn't it? I was there when they 2 imposed the White Book on you. And Barry and I looked at 3 each other and for the first time in our career we could 4 not deliver a contract. They were not about to give you 5 a contract. I saw what they did to the Machinist's 6 Union, and what they did to you out in the field. 7 But they did not break your resolve. You are 8 tremendously strong Union people, and I am proud to be a 9 part of this organization. 10 Thank you very much. 11 (Standing ovation.) 12 MR. TAYLOR: Thank you. 13 Just a comment, if you want to know what passion 14 is, hang out with Victor, or Dino, or Mike or Phil for a 15 day. You will feel the passion they have for you, and 16 this union, as they deal with management out in the 17 field. 18 I am going to close out now, because it's 19 getting long, and people need a drink -- like me. 20 (Laughter.) 21 MR. TAYLOR: Okay, although I'm not an attorney, 22 a lot of you I taught. You have gone through training 23 with me. (808) 532-0222 00050 1 that. And it shows in your dedication, your leadership 2 to the people that you represent. I still keep in touch 3 with what's going on out there, and you are doing a fine 4 job representing your people. 5 What you went through with the White Book is 6 incredible. That imposed White Book not only affected 7 you, but it affected the other unions in this 8 organization as well. And we beat 'em back. We just 9 delivered a great contract for those folks. And we are 10 real close to delivering a contract for the Flight 11 Service people in Alaska, and that's good. 12 I hope I have touched your lives as you have 13 touched my life. NATCA picked me up after two years on 14 the picket line, and gave me a new life. I have many 15 fond memories. I will be forever grateful to all of you, 16 the NATCA family. 17 I still have my NATCA e-mail address, thank you 18 Trish, Paul and the Board. I am staying on as a 19 consultant for a little while, I hope to stay on for a 20 few more years.
