(AP) — Ryan Getzlaf and Anaheim’s power-play unit put plenty of work in leading up to Wednesday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres in trying to jump start the unit that had gone scoreless in the first six games. Getzlaf and the Ducks ended up getting their first power-play goal at the most opportune time. His goal midway through the second period ended up being the go-ahead goal for Anaheim in a 5-2 victory. “It is nice to get rewarded and have all the hard work pay off,” Getzlaf said. “Even early in the game, we had some good movement and shots but couldn’t score.” Led by Adam Henrique’s two goals and Jakob Silfverberg’s three points (goal, two assists), Anaheim rallied after Buffalo scored the first two goals. Rickard Rakell had a goal and an assist, and Josh Manson added two assists for Anaheim, which has won its first three home games for the first time in five seasons. John Gibson made 31 saves for his fourth win of the season. Getzlaf gave the Ducks the lead at 9:14 of the second period when he fired a one-timer after a cross-ice pass by Sam Steel. It was their first goal with the man advantage in 18 opportunities, ending their second-longest drought to start a season. “There’s still lots of work to do but it’s a relief to finally get one in there,” Anaheim coach Dallas Eakin said.

A matchup Thursday night with a Florida Panthers team against which they've had success recently could give the Sabres a solid chance of winning six in a row on their own ice for the first time in nearly seven years. Buffalo (12-26-4) lost its first nine home games and had three wins in 16 such contests over the first two months. The Sabres, though, are 6-0-1 in the last seven at First Niagara Center, beating New Jersey 2-1 on Saturday for their fifth consecutive home win. Their first chance at winning six straight in Buffalo since Jan. 17-Feb. 15, 2007, was scheduled for Tuesday night against Carolina, but the game was postponed because of a snowstorm. Goaltender Ryan Miller has been a big part of the turnaround. He's 6-0-0 with a 1.29 goals-against average in his last six home starts and has a 1.73 GAA in his past nine overall. "The guys definitely feel the energy," Miller said of playing at home. "It's important to hear that the crowd's behind you." Miller, though, has struggled in Buffalo against Florida (16-21-6). He's alternated wins and losses in his last eight starts while posting a 3.00 GAA, and will give way to backup Jhonas Enroth on Thursday.

For the first time since the 1995 season, the Senators will take the ice without Daniel Alfredsson when they visit the rebuilding Buffalo Sabres on Friday night. Ottawa recorded 92 points to reach the playoffs in 2011-12 and went 25-17-6 in the lockout-shortened 2013 season, overcoming injuries to Jason Spezza, 2012 Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson and goalie Craig Anderson to again make the playoffs. It went on to upset second-seeded Montreal in the first round. "We probably surprised a few people last year with our injuries and being able to finish the way that we did," forward Zack Smith told the Senators' official website. "I think this year there are a lot more expectations from different people, but if we're a healthy club it's going to be exciting to see what we can actually do." It's who is not in Ottawa, however, that drew some of the biggest offseason headlines throughout the league.
