Julian the Apostate forbade the Christians to read the works of any heathen author, upon which the two Apollinarii (father and son) composed many works in imitation of the style of Homer and other ancient Greek works.

  • CHRISTIAN CHURCH ORIGINS in BRITAIN by Laurence Gardner
1 CHRISTIAN CHURCH ORIGINS IN BRITAIN by Laurence Gardner [Including primary reference sources] Introduction It is generally promoted by the Christian churches that the formalized religion based on the model of Jesus emerged from the teachings of Peter and Paul in Rome, but there is nothing in the Vatican Archive, nor in any historical record, to substantiate this premise. The New Testament Acts of the Apostles relate that, following two years of confinement in Caesarea on a charge of incitement, St Paul was taken under guard to Rome in the year AD 60.1 He was placed under house arrest prior to his appearance before the Senate tribunal, and then imprisoned in AD 62. Following that event, there is no further record of his life, and it is reckoned that he met his end in the mass slaughter of Christians by Emperor Nero in AD 64. Paul’s erstwhile colleague, the apostle St Peter, is not referenced in the Bible or in any other document subsequent to his imprisonment in Jerusalem,2 from where he escaped to Antioch, Syria, in AD 44. But without any supporting evidence, Church tradition has claimed from the 4th century that Peter also went to Rome, where he became the first leader of Christians in the city and was martyred along with Paul. In contrast, however, the Church’s own Apostolic Constitutions actually cite another man as the first Christian leader. Writing in AD 180, Bishop Irenaeus of Lyon in Gaul stated that the first ministry of the Christians in Rome was committed to the supervision of a certain Linus.

  • Constantinople's Mount of Olives and Pseudo
157 CONSTANTINOPLE’S MOUNT OF OLIVES AND PSEUDO-DOROTHEUS OF TYRE Not having anything more substantial to offer Irmgard Hutter, I should like to invite her to a stroll in the environs of Constantinople – not, I hasten to add, in today’s urban sprawl, but in the rural setting of a distant era. It will prove unavoidably a somewhat circuitous ambulation, though not, I hope, an exhausting one. In a book that is practically unobtainable the Russian liturgist A.A. Dmitrievskij argued that the ritual of the Sion Church, with its marked itinerant (stational) character, as described by Egeria in the late fourth century, was transplanted to Constantinople, where it was adapted to local conditions and later re-exported to Jerusalem 1. In support of his theory he quoted the legends surrounding St. Helena as well as a number of monuments at Constantinople that mirrored Jerusalem, namely the church called New Jerusalem near the Golden Gate, the monastery of Bethlehem, the church of Anastasis or Anastasia, the chapel of St. Constantine at the Forum (recalling in his view Constantine’s basilica of the Holy Sepulchre), the monastery called Spoudê (which he likened to that of the Spoudaioi at Jerusalem), the locality called Plakô- ton or Lithostrotos, the Mount of Olives and a few others. He admitted, however, that this imitation of Jerusalem, as he saw it, had little impact on ritual, seeing that the monuments in question had no association with particular biblical events and lacked therefore the evocative quality of the original holy places. Of the monuments quoted by Dmitrievskij most are irrelevant to his argument and only one, I believe, that of the Mount of Olives, shows the necessary convergence between name and liturgical practice.

  • And the Legend of the Apostle Andrew
THE IDEA OF APOSTOLI CITY IN BYZANTIUM AND THE LEGEND OF THE APOSTLE ANDREW b y FRANCIS DVORNIK Professor of Byzantine History, Dumbarton Oaks, and Member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Harvard University HARVARD UNIVERSITY PRESS Cambridge, Massachusetts 1958 All Rights reserved by the Trustees for Harvard University The Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection Washington, D.C. γ /&Ή50 Printed in G ermany at J. J. A ugustin* G lückstadt G 8 / 12359 Foreword The tradition concerning the missionary activity of the Apostle Andrew in Achaea and his death at Patras is regarded as legendary by the majority of modern scholars. The account of the Apostle's residence at Byzantium, where he is said to have ordained his disciple Stachys as the first bishop of that city, has likewise been shown to have little foundation in fact. But even if they are fictitious, these traditions played an important role in the religious history of the Middle Ages. The purpose of this study is not, therefore, to re-examine the apocryphal literature in which these traditions are contained/with a view to ascertaining the true facts about the Apostle Andrew (which, in all probability, will never be fully known), but to determine when these traditions arose, what use was made of them, and what prompted the Byzantines to regard the Apostle Andrew as the founder of their Church. These problems are intimately connected with a larger issue, namely, the importance attached, both in the West and in the East, to the apostolic origin of a bishopric. Thus we are led to examine the role which the idea of apostolicity played in the relations between Rome and Byzantium, and more specifically the use made in Greek polemical literature of the supposed apostolic origin of the bishopric of Constantinople.

In the general instability, lawlessness and savagery of the times, Anglo-Saxon England stood out as a beacon.”1 This work proposes to examine the “political arrangements” of this great and still little-known civilization, and in particular the Anglo-Saxon, or English Orthodox autocracy.
