The collapse of Roman government in the western Roman empire in the late fifth century inspired a crisis of identity and political messaging in the eastern Roman empire of the same period. I argue that the Romans of the eastern empire, in particular those who lived in Constantinople and worked in or around the imperial administration, responded to the challenge posed by the loss of Rome by rewriting the history of the Roman empire. The new historical narratives that arose during this period were initially concerned with Roman identity and fixated on urban space (in particular the cities of Rome and Constantinople) and Roman mythistory. By the sixth century, however, the debate over Roman history had begun to infuse all levels of Roman political discourse and became a major component of the emperor Justinian’s imperial messaging and propaganda, especially in his Novels. The imperial history proposed by the Novels was aggressivley challenged by other writers of the period, creating a clear historical and political conflict over the role and import of Roman history as a model or justification for Roman politics in the sixth century. -

Despite being eclipsed by the power of the emperors in the first century BC, the men who made up this order continued to act as the keepers of Roman civilization for the next four hundred years, maintaining their traditions even beyond the disappearance of an emperor in the West. Despite their longevity, the members of the senatorial aristocracy faced an existential crisis following the Ostrogothic conquest of the Italian peninsula, when the forces of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I invaded their homeland to contest its ownership. Considering the role they played in the later Roman Empire, the disappearance of the Roman senatorial aristocracy following this conflict is a seminal event in the history of Italy and Western Europe, as well as Late Antiquity. Two explanations have been offered to explain the subsequent disappearance of the Roman senatorial aristocracy. The first involves a series of migrations, beginning before the Gothic War, from Italy to Constantinople, in which members of this body abandoned their homes and settled in the eastern capital. -

Calendar of Roman Events
Introduction Steve Worboys and I began this calendar in 1980 or 1981 when we discovered that the exact dates of many events survive from Roman antiquity, the most famous being the ides of March murder of Caesar. Flipping through a few books on Roman history revealed a handful of dates, and we believed that to fill every day of the year would certainly be impossible. From 1981 until 1989 I kept the calendar, adding dates as I ran across them. In 1989 I typed the list into the computer and we began again to plunder books and journals for dates, this time recording sources. Since then I have worked and reworked the Calendar, revising old entries and adding many, many more. The Roman Calendar The calendar was reformed twice, once by Caesar in 46 BC and later by Augustus in 8 BC. Each of these reforms is described in A. K. Michels’ book The Calendar of the Roman Republic. In an ordinary pre-Julian year, the number of days in each month was as follows: 29 January 31 May 29 September 28 February 29 June 31 October 31 March 31 Quintilis (July) 29 November 29 April 29 Sextilis (August) 29 December. The Romans did not number the days of the months consecutively. They reckoned backwards from three fixed points: The kalends, the nones, and the ides. The kalends is the first day of the month. For months with 31 days the nones fall on the 7th and the ides the 15th. For other months the nones fall on the 5th and the ides on the 13th. -

CHAPTER 9. AN INTRODUCTION TO LECTIONARY 299 (A.C. MYSHRALL) Codex Zacynthius, as it is currently bound, is a near-complete Greek gospel lectionary dating to the late twelfth century. Very little work has been done on this lectionary because of the intense interest in the text written underneath. Indeed, New Testament scholars have generally neglected most lectionaries in favour of working on continuous text manuscripts.1 This is largely down to the late date of most of the available lectionaries as well as the assumption that they form a separate, secondary, textual tradition. However, the study of Byzantine lectionaries is vital to understand the development of the use of the New Testament text. Nearly half of the catalogued New Testament manuscripts are lectionaries.2 These manuscripts show us how, in the words of Krueger and Nelson, ‘Christianity is not so much the religion of the New Testament as the religion of its use’.3 These lectionaries were how the Byzantine faithful heard the Bible throughout the Church year, how they interacted with the Scriptures, and they open a window for us to see the worship of a particular community in a particular time and place. THE LECTIONARY A lectionary is a book containing selected scripture readings for use in Christian worship on a given day. The biblical text is thus arranged not in the traditional order of the Bible, but in the order of how the readings appear throughout the year of worship. International Journal of the Classical Tradition https://doi.org/10.1007/s12138-019-00551-1 ARTICLE A Public Debate on Cyril of Alexandria’s Views on the Procession of the Holy Spirit in Seventeenth‑Century Constantinople: the Jesuit Reaction to Nicodemos Metaxas’s Greek Editions Nil Palabıyık1 © The Author(s) 2020 On a September afternoon in 1627, crowds gathered at the library of the Jesuit resi- dence in Constantinople to witness a lively public discussion between two repre- sentatives of the Roman Catholic Church concerning Cyril of Alexandria’s views on the procession of the Holy Spirit.1 It is interesting to see that a ffth-century church father’s writings in the context of a dispute dating back to the sixth century were still considered politically relevant, socially infuential and theologically compelling in seventeenth-century Constantinople. The primary aim of this rather ostentatious gathering was to adopt and promote a diferent (according to Eastern Christians an ‘erroneous’) viewpoint on Cyril of Alexandria’s writings on the procession of the Holy Spirit, and thereby to present a counter-argument to that of the Eastern Church. The Jesuit dispute ultimately targeted the theological stance and the reputation of Cyril Lucaris (1572–1638), the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople and the of- cial head of the populous Greek Orthodox millet of the Ottoman Empire. 1 Cyril of Alexandria’s opinion on this question is still controversial, but lies beyond the scope of this article. The Consular Date of P.Oxy. LIX 3987 This interesting nomination of a prvtodhmÒthw by the guild of leukanta¤ began with a consular date, unsurprisingly for a document of the late fifth or early sixth century, the period to which the editor, Herwig Maehler, assigns it. Only the ending of the date, ]mprotãtvn, actually survives, but the presence of a date to Phamenoth 25 (21 March) of a 10th indiction narrows the possibilities considerably. The editor argues as follows (note to line 1): “As the handwriting suggests a date in the later fifth or the earlier sixth century, Phamenoth 25 of a tenth indiction year could be 21 March 457, 472, 487, 502, 517, or 532. Of these years 532 is the only one where two clarissimi (lam- prÒtatoi) appear as consuls at the right time of year; hence the restoration given in the text, which seems to fit the space. The consuls of 502, Probus and Avienus, appear in the papyri as a pair only towards the end of the year. Earlier Probus, the eastern consul, is mentioned alone, see R. S. Bagnall,1 APF 29 (1983) 30, id. et al., The Consuls of the Later Roman Empire 539.” The reader might reasonably expect to find on the basis of this note a restoration of the post- consulate in use in early 532, p.c. Orestis et Lampadii (metå tØn Ípate¤an Flaou¤vn ÉOr°stou ka‹ Lampad¤ou t«n lamprotãtvn).
