The Finger Lakes Region of Central New York Is a Premier Tourist Destination The Finger Lakes Region of Central New York is a premier tourist destination. The region, well known for its lakes, attractions, auto racing and festivals, is New York’s largest wine producing region. With over 100 wineries and vineyards centered around Seneca, Keuka, Cayuga and Canandaigua Lakes (to name a few), the area is the perfect destination for wine enthusiasts and their families. The Finger Lakes area is home to the following Wine Trails: The Seneca Lake Wine Trail is located in the heart of New York’s Finger Lakes Region overlooking the waters of Seneca Lake. The Seneca Lake Wine Trail is the largest and most active wine trail in New York State and includes over 36 wineries, a distillery and breweries. Seneca Lake wineries are known for producing some of the finest Rieslings. One event that is sponsored by the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is The Riesling to Visit Passport Program, which launches in May (Riesling month) and runs through August. The Passport offers complimentary wine tastings at 26 wineries. A second event, now in its 19th year, is Deck the Halls, which celebrates the beginning of the holiday season on Seneca Lake. This annual event is held over two weekends at the end of November and beginning of December. The Wine Festival is held in July at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, New York. Wine on Ice is a winter sampling of the Finger Lakes’ best in wine, food, shopping & entertainment. Wine on Ice is held in January at First Arena, Elmira, New York. While it may be hard to believe, just over 100 years ago local residents and scientists thought that there was a very strong possibility of finding diamonds in upstate New York (Figure 1)1. This diamond rush lasted for the first few decades of the 20th century, but after numerous failed attempts, the diamond hunt was over and this interesting episode in New York State’s history was largely forgotten. Below we provide a chronological outline of the scientific discoveries and reports on the kimberlitic rocks of central New York, followed by detailed descriptions of the three dikes that will be visited on today’s field trip. For a more detailed discussion of the ages and origins of these unusual rocks, the reader is referred to Kay et al. (1983) and Bailey & Lupulescu (2015). The moratorium order, that expires on October 3, 2021, allows additional time for rent relief to reach renters and to further increase vaccination rates. See: Press Release ; Signed Order • On July 27, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its guidance for mask wearing in public indoor settings for fully vaccinated people in areas where coronavirus transmission is high, in response to the spread of the Delta Variant. The CDC also included a recommendation for fully vaccinated people who have a known exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 to be tested 3-5 days after exposure, and to wear a mask in public indoor settings for 14 days or until they receive a negative test result. Consistent with the Interim Guidance for Higher-Education During the COVID- 19 Public Health Emergency – issued by the New York State (NYS) Department of Health on June 28th, 2020 –this document is provided as a mechanism to: 1. Affirm to NYS the intention of Syracuse University to resume residential instruction on August 24, 2020, and 2. Demonstrate that Syracuse University’s reopening plan is consistent with the policies, protocols, and requirements of NYS related to reactivating our residential campus for in-person instruction. The foundation of Syracuse University’s plan for reopening and in-person instruction is a commitment to prioritize the health, safety and well-being of students, faculty, staff and the Central New York Community.
