The first area of investigation was of conceptsof death evidenced at the child's various developmental stages, asdocumented in numerous psychological studies. The second areastudied was the various reactions to death which a child mightdisplay. The third area discussed was the culturalattitudes of present day American society toward death, wiyh special emphasis on howthese attitudes influence the child's conception of death. Lastly, areview was made of American children's literature from colonialtimes to the present, noting the treatment of death as a reflection ofthe cultural values of each era. Twenty-two books ofjuvenile fiction, for children up to age 12, were evaluated in termsof their treatment of death as a major theme. Most of the books were found tobe of outstanding value in acquainting the young child withwholesome death concepts, were psychologically valid, and complied with accepted socialattitudes toward the subject. Shah* Brain death is different from the traditional, biological conception of death. Al- though there is no possibility of a meaningful recovery, considerable scientific evidence shows that neurological and other functions persist in patients accurately diagnosed as brain dead. Elsewhere with others, I have argued that brain death should be understood as an unacknowledged status legal fiction. A legal fiction arises when the law treats something as true, though it is known to be false or not known to be true, for a particular legal purpose (like the fiction that corporations are persons). -

Midwest Studies in Philosophy, XXVI (2002) Eternity and Immortality in Spinoza’s Ethics STEVEN NADLER I Descartes famously prided himself on the felicitous consequences of his philoso- phy for religion. In particular, he believed that by so separating the mind from the corruptible body, his radical substance dualism offered the best possible defense of and explanation for the immortality of the soul. “Our natural knowledge tells us that the mind is distinct from the body, and that it is a substance...And this entitles us to conclude that the mind, insofar as it can be known by natural phi- losophy, is immortal.”1 Though he cannot with certainty rule out the possibility that God has miraculously endowed the soul with “such a nature that its duration will come to an end simultaneously with the end of the body,” nonetheless, because the soul (unlike the human body, which is merely a collection of material parts) is a substance in its own right, and is not subject to the kind of decomposition to which the body is subject, it is by its nature immortal. When the body dies, the soul—which was only temporarily united with it—is to enjoy a separate existence. By contrast, Spinoza’s views on the immortality of the soul—like his views on many issues—are, at least in the eyes of most readers, notoriously difficult to fathom. One prominent scholar, in what seems to be a cry of frustration after having wrestled with the relevant propositions in Part Five of Ethics,claims that this part of the work is an “unmitigated and seemingly unmotivated disaster.. -

As this question impinges on the question of anthropologY, it is further stated that according to the Hellenic VieW man has a bodY — Which, moreoVer is conceiVed as a tomb of the soul (Orphics) — Whereas accor - ding to the JeWish VieW man is a bodY. A careful inVestigation of the Hellenic and OT-JeWish eVidence shoWs that it is a metho - dological miss to confuse VieWs in Hom ēros and the Orphics With later VieWs in Sokrates and Plat ōn. Introduction In 1975, the State Bar of Texas and the Baylor Law Review published a series of articles addressing the advisability of enacting legislation that would permit physicians to engage in “passive euthanasia”1 to assist terminally ill patients to their medically inevitable deaths.2 One of the articles, authored by an accomplished Austin pediatrician, significantly informed the reasoning of the Supreme Court of New Jersey in the seminal decision In re Quinlan, wherein that court recognized for the first time in this country a terminally ill patient’s constitutional liberty interest to voluntarily, through a surrogate decision maker, refuse life-sustaining treatment. 355 A.2d 647, 662–64, 668–69 (N.J. 1976) (quoting Karen Teel, M.D., The Physician’s Dilemma: A Doctor’s View: What the Law Should Be, 27 Baylor L. Likewise in Dutch ,‟DEAD‟ is dood and “kill” is doden. In Swedish, “DEAD” is dod and „Kill‟ is doda. In English the same process resulted in the word “DEADEN”, where the suffix “EN” means “to cause to be”. We all know that the things which has life is going to be dead in future anytime any moment. So, the sentence we know popularly that “Man is mortal”. The sources of life comes into human body when he/she is in the womb of mother. The active meeting of sperm and eggs, it create a new life in the woman‟s overy, and the woman carried the foetus with 10 months and ten days to given birth of a new born baby . When the baby comes out from the pathway of the vagina of his/her mother, then his/her first cry is depicted that the new born baby is starting to adjustment of of the newly changing environment . For that very first day, the baby‟s survivation is rairtained by his/her primary environment. But the tendency of death is started also. In any time of any space the human baby have to accept death. Not only in the case of human being, but the animals, trees, species, reptailes has also the probability of death. The above mentioned live behind are also survival for the fittest. -

The aim of this study was to select a cryoprotecting agent and optimize its concentration in a solid lipid nanoparticle formulation. Progesterone-loaded stearic acid solid lipid nanoparticles (SA-P SLNs) were prepared by hot homogenization with high speed mixing and sonication. The stearic acid content was 4.6% w/w and progesterone was 0.46% w/w of the initial formulation. Multiple surfactants were evaluated, and a lecithin and sodium taurocholate system was chosen. Three concentrations of surfactant were then evaluated, and a concentration of 2% w/w was chosen based on particle size, polydispersity, and zeta potential. Agglomeration of SA-P SLNs after lyophilization was observed as measured by increased particle size. Dextran, glycine, mannitol, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), sorbitol, and trehalose were evaluated as cryoprotectants by both an initial freeze–thaw analysis and after lyophilization. Once selected as the cryoprotectant, trehalose was evaluated at 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% for optimal concentration, with 20% trehalose being finally selected as the level of choice. -

Freezingsurvival of the wood frog (Rana sylvatica)is enhancedby the synthesisof the cryoprotectantglucose, via liver glycogenolysis.Because the quantityof glucosemobilized during freezingbears significantly on the limit of freezetolerance, we investigated the relationship between the quantity of liver glycogen and the capacity for cryoprotectant synthesis. We successfullyaugmented natural levels of liver glycogenby injecting cold-conditionedwood frogs with glucose.Groups of 8 frogs having mean liver glycogenconcentrations of 554 + 57 (SE), 940 + 57, and 1264 + 66 pmollg catabolized98.7, 83.4, and 52.8%, respectively,of their glycogenreserves during 24 h of freezingto -2.5'C. Glucoseconcentrations con- comitantly increased,reaching 2l + 3, 102 + 23, and 119 + 14 pmollg, respectively,in the liver, and 15 * 3,42 + 5, and 6l * 5 pcmol/ml-, respectively, in the blood. Becausethe capacity for cryoprotectant synthesisdepends on the amount of liver glycogen,the greatestrisk of freezinginjury likely occursduring spring,when glycogenreserves are minimal. Non- glucoseosmolites were important in the wood frog's cryoprotectantsystem, especially in frogs having low glycogenlevels. Presumably the natural variation in cryoprotectant synthesis capacity among individuals and populations of R. sylvatica chiefly reflectsdifferences in glycogenreserves; however, environmental,physiological, and geneticfactors likely are also involved.
