United States Geological Survey, Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK 74078-3051, USA; [email protected] Abstract: Boselaphus tragocamelus (Pallas, 1766) is a bovid commonly called the nilgai or blue bull and is Asia’s largest antelope. A sexually dimorphic ungulate of large stature and unique coloration, it is the only species in the genus Boselaphus. It is endemic to peninsular India and small parts of Pakistan and Nepal, has been extirpated from Bangladesh, and has been introduced in the United States (Texas), Mexico, South Africa, and Italy. It prefers open grassland and savannas and locally is a significant agricultural pest in India. It is not of special conservation concern and is well represented in zoos and private collections throughout the world. DOI: 10.1644/813.1. -

Carpal bones of these animals are generally recovered in excellent condition but are rarely identified beyond the classification 1/small-sized artiodactyl." This guide, based on the analysis of over thirty modem specimens, is intended as an aid in the identifi cation of these remains for archaeological and biogeographical studies. Dja Faunal Reserve Cameroon
DJA FAUNAL RESERVE CAMEROON This is one of the largest and best-protected rainforests in Africa, almost completely surrounded by the Dja river which forms its boundary. 90% of its area is still undisturbed. It is one of IUCN’s fifteen critical zones for the conservation of central African biodiversity and as a result of its inaccessibility, its transitional climate, floristic diversity and borderline location retains a rich vertebrate fauna with 109 species of mammals and a wide variety of primates. Threats to the site: Inadequate management has resulted in erosion of biodiversity, a growth of forest exploitation, agricultural clearance and potential pollution from a cobalt mine. COUNTRY Cameroon NAME Dja Faunal Reserve (La Réserve de Faune du Dja) NATURAL WORLD HERITAGE SITE 1987: Inscribed on the World Heritage List under Natural Criteria ix and x. UTAH PRONGHORN STATEWIDE MANAGEMENT PLAN UTAH DIVISION OF WILDLIFE RESOURCES DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES UTAH DIVISION OF WILDLIFE RESOURCES STATEWIDE MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR PRONGHORN I. PURPOSE OF THE PLAN A. General This document is the statewide management plan for pronghorn in Utah. This plan will provide overall direction and guidance to Utah’s pronghorn management activities. Included in the plan is an assessment of current life history and management information, identification of issues and concerns relating to pronghorn management in the state, and the establishment of goals, objectives and strategies for future management. The statewide plan will provide direction for establishment of individual pronghorn unit management plans throughout the state. B. Dates Covered This pronghorn plan will be in effect upon approval of the Wildlife Board (expected date of approval November 30, 2017) and subject to review within 10 years. II. SPECIES ASSESSMENT A. Natural History The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is the sole member of the family Antilocapridae and is native only to North America. Fossil records indicate that the present-day form may go back at least a million years (Kimball and Johnson 1978). The name pronghorn is descriptive of the adult male’s large, black-colored horns with anterior prongs that are shed each year in late fall or early winter. Females also have horns, but they are shorter and seldom pronged. Mature pronghorn bucks weigh 45–60 kilograms (100–130 pounds) and adult does weigh 35–45 kilograms (75–100 pounds). Pronghorn are North America’s fastest land mammal and can attain speeds of approximately 72 kilometers (45 miles) per hour (O’Gara 2004a). -
Common Eland
Tragelaphus oryx – Common Eland recognised, though their validity has been in dispute (Thouless 2013): Tragelaphus o. livingstonii (Sclater 1864; Livingstone's Eland): also called kaufmanni, niediecki, selousi and triangularis. It is found in the Central Zambezian Miombo woodlands i.e. south- central Africa (Angola, Zambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Malawi). Livingstone's Eland has a brown pelt with up to twelve stripes. Tragelaphus o. oryx (Pallas 1766; Cape Eland): also called alces, barbatus, canna and oreas. This subspecies is found south of the Zambezi river (South Africa, Botswana and Namibia). The fur is tawny, and adults lose their stripes. WORLD KERlTAGE NOMINATION -- IUCN SUMMARY 4071 DJA FAUNAL RESERVE (CAMERON) Summary prepared by IUCN (April 1987) based on the original nomination submitted by Cameroon. This original and all documents presented in support of this nomination will be available for consultation at the meetings of the Bureau and the Committee. 1. LOCATION, On the Dja River in the Central-Southern and Eastern Provinces of Cameroon, 243km south-east of Yaoundg, and 5km west of Lomie. 2'49'-3'23'N, 12'25'-13'35'E. 2. JURIDICAL DATA: Protected as a 'rgserve de faune et de chasse' in 1950, and then as a IrEserve de faune' under the National Forestry Act Ordinance 1973. Accepted as a Biosphere Reserve in 1981. Proposed as a National Park. Asea is 526,000 ha. 3. IDENTIFICATIONI The Dja reserve is virtually encircled by the Dja River which flows west along the long northern boundary of the reserve, and then along the southern boundary, before flowing southeast as a tributary to the Congo. Cliffs run along the course of the river in the south for some 6Okm, and are associated with a section of the river broken up by rapids and waterfalls. Except in the south-east of the reserve, the relief is fairly flat and consists of a succession of round-topped hills. The vegetation mainly comprises dense evergreen Congo rainforest with a main canopy at 30-40m rising to 60m. Some 43 species of tree form the canopy, with legumes being particulary common. The area is known to have a wide range of primate species including lowland gorilla, greater white-nosed guenon, moustached guenon, crowned guenon, talapoin, white-collared mangabey, white-cheeked mangabey, agile mangabey, drill, mandrill, potto, Demdorff's galago, black and white colobus monkey and chimpanzee.
