5 Foreword

stablished in 1952, Providence women’s college is the first women’s college in the Malabar re- gion and it has completed 64 years of service to the cause of women’s empowerment through Eeducation. Every member of the Providence family is motivated by the vision of the college which empha- sizes the holistic development of the person. Our main aim is to mould our students to become socially responsible citizens, so we have been conducting various activities to help our students to become self-reliant, and capable of meeting the future challenges. The history of social service activities in Providence Women’s college is as old as the history of college itself. This is reflected in the mission statement of the college. We have always fostered a genuine and active social concern among our staff and students and their families thus helping them to build a society of justice, love and peace. NSS unit is one of vibrant division of our college upholding its motto and providing the complete space for personality development through community service. It is very difficult task to select 100 NSS volunteers from more than 200 applicants every year. They are selected after finding out their aptitude for service learning through interview. The two units of the college have a membership of more than 200 volunteers each year. The task undertaken by the volunteers in the campus and outside the campus are well appreciated and accepted. The unit has reached a long way and it is exploring in many of the social activities. The programme officer and the volunteers are in search of inventive ideas and implementing them at the earliest. As Pope Francis said” today certainly people need words but most of all they need us to bear witness to the mercy and tenderness which warm the heart, rekindle hope and attracts people to God. The messenger becomes the message of compassion and joy”. Our NSS volunteers tried to be massagers of compassion through various activities they undertook. Adopting colony, construct- ing check dam to lessen drinking water scarcity and to protect a bridge on the main road with more than 2000 sacks of sand, constructing toilet, renovation of well at Nadakav colony, natural farming at Poor home, organ, blood donation, a few to mention other than the regular ac- tivities like residential seven camps, nature camps, Seminars, leadership training programmmes, quiz competition, flash mob, medical camps etc. Being convinced and aware of the environmental degradation and the need to protect the mother earth ‘our common home’ NSS organised many activities to care, oversee, protect and preserve the environment and nature in all its forms. Few ex- amples are organic farming, solid waste management specially collecting and sending plastic waste from the localities and from the houses of the entire student community for recycling, awareness programme to avoid usage of plastic as much as possible, to save water, energy etc. Students were given lots of opportunities to organize various social and cultural activities in order to cultivate their leadership qualities because leadership provide them with opportunities to involve them- selves with others’ lives. Our NSS unit was the recipient of the award of best NSS Fest Aaravam 2K16. Our students showed their social concern by donating clothes to tribal colony, book donation to sub jail and organisation of various camps for the weaker sections of the society. The compassionate response of our students made a major difference in the lives of the people with whom they were directly involved. It will surely create an on-going impact in their lives too. The driving force behind all this activities of the unit is Dr. Julie and the passion for social ser- vice is praise worthy. She finds time beyond class hours to give personal counseling, support and guidance to channelize the youthful energy of our students to serve the under privileged, and the marginalized living in colonies and huts and our own students coming from the periphery. She is delighted to train our students to meet emergencies and natural disasters and to practice national integration and social harmony. The teacher is a role model for our students and the public. With a sense of satisfaction I forward the report of the activities for the year 2015-‘16 I wish all the success to the programme officers and volunteers in their future activities.

7 SELF-APPRAISAL

he NSS unit No: 15 of Providence Women’s College have a membership of 100 volunteers each year. The unit was steered by a couple of dynamic programme officers. The challenging activity that the volunteers experience has raised them in good stead in their search of high- Ter studies and careers. They are also exposed to various experiences by constant enriched training progrogrammes and activities which have enabled them to reflect and think on how they could contribute to the social cause and has developed social, citizenship values and skills among them. The volunteers are equipped with Social responsibility, Leadership qualities, Organizational abili- ties, Problem solving Competencies, Sense of communal harmony in Social relations and National Brotherhood. The invigorated activity in the unit has made it one of the pulsating units under University of Calicut. The dream to be a part of NSS family from my college days came true when I was asked to un- dertake the post as a programme officer of NSS unit of Providence Women’s College. It was one of the delightful moments and I utilized all the opportunities to act as catalyst to bring a positive change in the volunteers as well as in the community. Among the activities organized in the unit, the project check dam construction was one of the- Highlights during my period of service. The work initiated was challenging, risky and enriched with full enthusiasm. To construct a sand check dam across a river of 30 cm length and to height 1m was not an easy task with majority of the volunteers who were non swimmers. The project was successfully completed and was a solution for water scarcity to the people during the drought condition. This project raised the self-confidence levelas well as helped them to learn the art of cooperation and coordination in achieving a set goal. This was really an adventours as well student centered programme which strengthened the personality and transformed them to strong minded volunteers by preparing them to take up any risky task in their future life. Being a researcher in science I always thought how to bring the benefits of research to the com- munity and the community based participatory research. Many of the research outcomes see light only under the walls of the research laboratory . As a programme officer I was able to bring light to many of the research outcome and projects for the benefits of the community. The wick irrigation a technique developed at CWRDM was introduced to the NSS volunteers as well as to the commu- nity members of Niravu residence. This training programme of self-watering was very successful in the campus as well as in the community it enriched in the volunteers how education can be made more purposeful and meaningful by the participation in NSS. The science for human concern was made true by this activity. As an NSS programme officer I was able to utilize many funded projects under different depart- ments of the government for the benefits of the weaker sections of the society. During our regular activities and special camps we take many surveys and was successful to bring solutions for the problems. The arrangement of Pipe compost at Santhinagar colony was one of the programme initiated. The lack of proper waste management was recognized during our survey and the solu- tion was provided by the MLA fund and by utilizing the manual power of the volunteers. The well renovation project was a great recognized programme of our NSS unit. It was implemented by the utilizationof the fund provided by CWRDM under the International year of water co-operation. And the volunteers actively participated in the cleaning and renovation work of the well. The water scarcity problem was solved for families in the colony and it was a situation where the volunteers were made to utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to the individual problem of that community. Why there is the increase of super specialty hospitals? The change in the lifestyle especially in the practice of diet is the answer to this question and solution is the early detection and cure. The early detection of the diseases related to heart and kidney most vital organs of the body was made by ar- ranging a medical camps. A life style disease detecting camp with collaboration of snehasparsham,

8 Iqra hospital and Malabar gold and diamonds was arranged at, Kattuvyal and Kalluthan colonies . As per the doctors reference the patients were provided with free medicines. The camp was provid- ed in this area so that the volunteers could find a solution to the problem for the improvement of the quality of life of the economically and socially weaker sections of the community. Then and there came many situations where the NSS volunteers showed their sense of respon- sibility and the capacity to meet emergencies by taking active roles in natural disasters of Chennai, Uttarakhand and Kashmir flood through raising money, collecting clothes and other necessary materials. To bring back the glory of our rich heritage of Calicut, Manachira a reservoir for the whole city, the NSS volunteers were on its restoration path, to conserve tradition and facts many programmes like the Purajini programme on Karkidakam was organized. Malayalam is our mother tongue. But unfortunately we are ignoring its rich culture and heri- tage. We also started a promotion activity by releasing Malayalam Manuscript magazine every year. This year, famous Malayalam poem Mampazhaam was enacted as shadowplay by NSS volunteers as part of Malayalam reading week celebration. We can bring a positive change in society faster through art freedom and creativity was proved by presenting theater sketches this year and Kurathi dance drama last year in the campus on NSS day celebration. Being one of the organizing members to initiate the NSS fest, Aaravam 2k16 to be first in the history of NSS in the university. This was a common platform whereself-confidence, tolerance, communication, planning skill and competence required for group living and sharing of responsi- bilities developed. Most of the students were unaware of the need for blood donation. We changed that through continuous awareness campaigns. More than 319 units of blood have been supplied in the last three years. Some of the activities like, by donating clothes to the tribal colony which was one of their basic needs, the collection of fund for construction of building at AUP School Malaparamba which was destroyed by some anti-social activists and donation of books to the library of Sub jail, Kozhi- kode, the visits to poor home, child care cancer ward, Alzheimer’s center all created consideration for the other human beings in the volunteers. The transformation of 1 acre waste land in to beautiful vegetable garden through natural farm- ing was a success story for the volunteers and a way of bringing back new life to Ballikasadan, now a day care center to the mentally disabled students. The participation of the volunteers in the trans- formation activity provided a great happiness and joy to these children. The spirit of volunteerism and the social commitment of the volunteers were well exhibited and appreciated at 61st National athlete’s meet and Global Ayurveda meet. To lead a team of 20 volunteers from the University of Calicut for adventure camp at Narkanda, Himachal Pradesh was a bold as well as a challenging decision from my side. Through this camp I could uphold the motto of NSS “NOT ME BUT U” by rendering my selfless service for taking care of these volunteers and inculcating in them the objectives and principles of NSS at every needful situation and in their social life. Another experience was leading a team of 15 volunteers under the University of Calicut for a 3 day orientation programme at RGIYD, Sreeperumbadur, Chennai. It was also a rich experience in coordinating a group of volunteers from different colleges. All these activities initiated by me were carried out under the guidance of unit advisory board. I believe that I had carried out all my duties and responsibilities as programme officer with most ef- fectiveness, utmost truthfulness and earnestness, and feeling proud in building strong, lively, active socially committed NSS volunteers for the upliftment of our Nation.

15 Conserve Water to Conserve Life Checkdam

he project was undertaken after attending a seminar on the climate justice: Perspective and challenges. Based on the report of the coming drought conditions in the state and a solution for this agony was Check Dam. The chief motive of camp was to build a check dam across Tthe river of Chethukadav, Cherupuzha (Branch of Chaliyar, which was near to our campus, so that water table in the locality would rise and will be proved as a permanent solution to water storage, to protect a bridge on the main Mukkom road and also a bio –hedge was planted along the river side to check soil erosion. . Each sand dam has potential to provide a clean supply of water for up to 1, 200 people, animals, tree nurseries and vegetable gardens. The increased water availability in a 10 kilometer radius means that a sand dam may indirectly benefit up to thousands of people. Sand dams change the lives of people by providing water for their needs. They provide a year-round source of water near community-member homes so they do not have to spend hours walking and queuing to fetch water. The check dam construction began on 19th December 2015 with 100 NSS volunteers. At the beginning of the work the depth of the river was below approximately 20 cm and width of the river at the work site was appro. 30m. The volunteers filled 2000 bags with sand and the filled sand bags were laid on the river from one end to about 1meter height, length 30m, & width: 1meter . As the work proceeded the flow of the river was increasing as well as the height of the water level. But the student with their will power and positive attitude toward the work was able to with stand all the adverse conditions. Though the programme officers and majority of them of were not trained in swimming still was in the river with its high pressure as part of construction work, ready to face any situation with high energy and intelligence . Sand dams change the environment by restoring and enhancing it: Sand dams transform the environment as the stored water raises the water table level both upstream and downstream from the dams. Bio-diversity increases signifi- cantly as the river bed, banks and water catchment area are replenished. Increased bio-diversity makes it possible for community members to create a sustainable livelihood in harmony with their environment The objective of our work was true in all sense as it was proved after taking a feedback from the people near by the river after months . The selected work was challenging, unique and all the volunteers participated enthusiastically. It emphasized in them the dignity of labour, self-help and the need of combining physical work with intellectual pursuits. Initiatives of programme officer 16 WELL RENOVATION & RECHARGE A boon to the Nadakavu colony

ased on the socio economic survey at Nadakavucolony, we could identify many problems faced by these colony members. The major problem was the drinking water issue though they had two wells . The one well was used as a dust bin for disposing all types of solid, plastic and Borganic wastes. The other well which was earlier used for drinking purpose near to it was polluted due to the leaching of waste water from the nearby well. The people said that the first well was pol- luted to drainage present nearby to the well. So a new well was constructed at the time of election by the demand of the people for vote sake and the first well was not filled before the construction of the new. So finding a solution for the problem we approached CWRDM and they assisted us in this matter. The work was categorized in 2-4 parts and the complete work was carried out by our volunteers and few members of the colony. In the first part the well was cleaned by removing all the waste till its final depth. Thewaste removed was with pungent smell and black texture comprising, old clothes, plastic items, even television set, etc. In the second part well was fully filled with 3 loads of red mud and the well was covered permanently. In The third part the second well water was flushed out continuously for few weeks and then the water was taken for water analysis to CWRDM for the quality analysis. In the fourth part the second well was covered by a newly made iron net and a pulley and bucket was also provided. The renovated well was painted. Now the people are happily using the well for all their domestic purposes. This renovation of well was a great boon for the society at the time of the scorching heat when there was scarcity of water everywhere. But now the colony members comprising 22 families are enjoying the splendid water supply. Further our college women cell is providing training in many entrepreneurship courses to the ladies of the colony by makingthem self-sufficient. Initiatives of programme officer 18 A zero-waste management Model Project from Mental Health Center to Collectorate

he dream of adoption of Kuthiravattom Mental Health Center for the sparkling drive Twas successful and we were the great achievers in pioneering initiative in implementing zero budget waste management as a model project. The NSS Unit of our college received high appreciation from the Hon- ourable Minister, Dr. M. K Muneer and from the Hospital Management in the year 2015. The campaign was started in the year 2013at our cam- pus and achieved great apprecia- tion from Green Core Community Kozhikode. The campaign clean drive, it ex- tended to the society through the volunteers to the isolated area of the society, the Mental Health Cen- ter. The campaign has now reached a place were almost all strata from the society work and visit. The NSS unit was highly appreciated for sup- porting and rendering their selfless service at Kozhikode collectorate to set a model for the remaining civil stations in the state by becoming the first one to adopt the zero-waste management initiative 'Mr Clean project'on its premises to put an end to the existing waste threat in the collectorate compound. Initiatives of programme officer 19 HARITHA SENA-WE THE GREEN FORCE @ NATIONAL school ATHELETics MEET

he NSS force was selected for the mission considering their selfless role in the community and sup- porting programmes to the society. It was a great pleasure for the NSS volunteers to volunteer the National Athletes Games held at Olympian Rahman stadium under the guidance of Kozhikode TSuchithwa Mission by making the stadium and its premises plastic free zone. National Athletes game was held from January 29 to February 2016. The volunteerswere provided with green jersey and caps as dress code. The media titled them as “green force in the playground” . The duty at the campsite was to completely ban the entry of plastic items like plastic bottles, polythene covers, plasticwrappers, eatables in plastic con- tainers and polythene bags. The duty began at 6-00 a. m to 7. 30 pm. There were three entry points and the volunteers were like the Indian soldiers at the border safe guarding our country, they enjoyed their duty and were fully committed towards their responsibilities. The plastic items were marked with a sticker and Rupees 10 were collected from the person carrying the plastic item and it was made sure that the person returned back with the item with sticker . In the absence of the sticker the amount was not refunded. The collected wastes were later segregated as recyclable, plastic and paper waste. More than 100 bags of plastics were col- lected and recycled each day and were send to recycling center. The hard hours were turned to excitement when the volunteers had the opportunity to meet famous national athletes, the prides of India, SmtP. T. Usha, Smt. Anju Baby George, Smt. Shiny Wilson, Mr. Tintu Huka, Mr. I. M. Vijayan. The supply of water was also the duty of volunteers and they supplied water to all the corners as well as to all the heights of the stadium. They made sure that water was available to everyone. The green force was appreciated by Honour- able Education Minister P. K. Abdual Rabb, the officials, the participants, the spectators and the natives also congratulated the volunteers. @ GLOBAL AYURVEDA MEET: HARTHA SENA Global Ayurvedha Fest was held at Sarovaram from 31/1/2016 to 4/2/16 at Kozhikode. About twenty NSS volunteers from our college took active participation in the fest, from morning 9’oclock till 6’oclock in the evening. The group was divided among themselves in to three different sections to provide proper vol- untership for the programme. A group of five members were appointed at each entrance to strictly prohibit the entry of plastic substances to the exhibition hall overcoming a lot of harsh approaches. Fine for plastic items was successfully implemented among thousands of visitors including representatives from different countries. More than 500 of exhibition stall were settled up for the Global Fest before tea break volunteers engaged in picking up waste from the premises of each stall. Team members visited each stall and ensured that the sites are kept always clean and perfect. Global Ayurvedha Fest was made memorable by the presti- gious visits and participation of celebrities including actress Manju Warrior, Former Railway minister Sri. O. Rajagopal, Emminentwriter, M. T. Vasudevan Nair and social activist Ms. Vandhana Shiva. On 3/2/16 Honourable Prime Minister NarendraModi addressed the concluding ceremony. The programme came to end on 4th February . The event was another golden feather in the crown of Providence College NSSunit. . Initiatives of programme officer 20 WICK A TRICK OF SELF WATERING

Wick Irrigation’ “Thiri Nana”basically a self-watering technique which lessens the water intake for agriculture to a great extent. As a part of NSS activities, Natural farming was a regular activ- ity conducted in our campus and we always faced the problem of scarcity of water in our place . ‘‘In order to over overcome this problem we thought of introducing wick irrigation technique in our campus. A one day workshop was organized in our campus and 40 volunteers were given training by Dr. Kamalam Joseph, a scientist at the Centre for Water Resource Development and Manage- ment (CWRDM) in Kozhikode, with an aim to facilitating farming even when there is scarcity of water, farming of potted vegetables and ornamental plants in the homesteads and on the terrace, for urban agriculture enthusiasts who complain of lack of quantity water and time to devote. A specially designed wick of 30-cm length and 1. 5 inches width is inserted through a hole at the bottom of the grow bag. Half of its length goes up to the surface of the soil while the rest is inserted into a bottle containing water. The wick sucks up the water supplying only what is necessary for the plant. This technology gives a solution to the thrown away plastic bottles. The wick would absorb the water in the bottle through capillary force into the grow bag without wasting a drop. If a 2-litre plastic bottle is being used, the filled water would water the plant even in the absence of the owner for a number of days. Watering different times is not needed and the evaporation is less. There is no requirement of labor. . This project was a grant success in our college campus. Plants need water regularly, and they'll begin to wilt or die off if they don't receive the correct amount of moisture. When we had midterm vacations we usually face the problem how to regularly water the plants. A wick watering system helped us to solve this problem by providing moisture to plants during our absence. The trained volunteers gave training to the whole NSS unit and later the NSS volunteers gave training to the whole students of the college. This technique was employed in the college campus as well in the homeyard ofstaff and students. The volunteers also trained the members of the Nirav residence and extended the training programme to BallikaSadan.

Initiatives of programme officer 21 ‘PUNARJANI’ Realities and traditions of Karkidakam

o conserve our realities and traditions we conducted an awareness programme on Karkida- kam-punarjani to reveal the importance of karkidakam. The programme began with collec- tion and gathering of information from the elderly people and grandparents of the volunteers Tabout the significance of this month . The change in the habits and life styles among the coming up generations has given way to number of diseases. To promote the importance of the medicinal value and nutrient rich diet, the volunteers prepared 20 different green leafy vegetables delicious diet and organized a food exhibi- tion in the campus. This exhibition could bring out the importance of the specific observance of diet and lifestyle suitable for each season to defend the body from the lashes of changing seasons. By following a strict routine, we can cancel the effect of the sudden transition from the scorching summer to the cool monsoons. Karkidagan Kanji was prepared by the NSS volunteers was served in the campus . Ayurveda tackles monsoon-related problems by administering a medicated gruel called karkidaka kanji or oushada kanji (medicinal gruel). Karkkidaka kanji consists of boiled cereals and medicinal plants. Along with Navarra rice, 12 to 24 types of medicinal herbs are used in preparing the gruel. Karkida- kam is also the best time for rejuvenation therapies. During the rainy season, the body is receptivity to medication is at its peak and hence therapies aimed at strengthening the body would be more effective. The volunteers exhibited medicinal plants especially deshapushpam, in the campus. The medici- nal plants were maintained in the campus and they were exhibited. The importance and its medic- inal value was also displayed in the charts for the exhibition. We were surprised when we got many medicinal plants and the idea of the availability of these plants were present in home yards itself. After rainy season many plants were sprouted and we with ignorance remove them considering as weeds. The knowledge of the commonly occurring and easily available medicinal plants were introduced in this exhibition and its importance were also discussed. Initiatives of programme officer 22 A JOINT VENTURE TO BRING A NEW LIFE TO NAYANAR BALLIKA SADANAM

joint venture of the NSS Unit, Cooperative Soci- ety Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative So- ciety (ULCCS) and Niravu resident association Ahave unveiled a joint mission to givenew life to Nayanar Balika Sadanam, where the urn bearing the ashes of the Mahatma was brought before it was immersed in the Bharathapuzha. It was Founded in 1957, the Nayanar Balika Sadanam, a girls’ home by Varikkara Rairu Nayanar, a follower of the Servants of India Society in Malabar. At present Nayanar Balika Sadanam is the day care center for the mentally challenged students. The NSS Unit initiated the project, preparing the land with vegetable garden in the one acre land by adopting Natural farming. The projects started with land preparation by removing plastic wastes from the land and transferring it in to recycling unit. The vol- unteers shared their knowledge of Natural farming, prepared jeevamritham, plant hormones and used wick irrigation techniques. About one acre of waste land was transformed in to a beautiful vegetable garden with the support of NSS Unit. The volunteers gave training in natural farming to these students and their parents and also involved them in the farming. Inreturn the stu- dents thought the volunteers to make phenol. There was exchange and sharing of ideas and skills between them. The project was involved to make the waste land a best land and also mentally challenged students self-suf- ficient. The NSS volunteers are keeping in touch with children through regular visits and interactions.

Initiatives of programme officer 23 Manachira on its restoration path

n order to protect the only water source to the whole city, Manachira, the NSS Volunteers and ten trained members of Niravu carried out the cleaning drive by clearing bushes on the steps leading and removing the dumped plastic waste from the water reservoir situated in the heart of Ithe city. is part of our heritage, a man-made freshwater pond situated in the center of the city of Kozhikode in Kerala, southern India. . The pond is a major source of drinking water for hotels and shops in the city, but is susceptible to pollution by the throwing of plastic bottles, poly- thene bags, wrappers to the bushes which cover the steps. The excreta of some animals inhabiting in the thick bushes also reach the pond which contaminate the pond. The steps around Mananchira have witnessed many changes. There used to be a time when people counted the steps visible above the water to assess the severity of summer. However, the new generation of Kozhikode had never seen those steps as they were covered in bushes, until after the cleaning of the bushes. The drive was held from 7am to 10am for two days on 1st and 2nd April 2016. We have recovered many dumped plastic carry bags from the water and bottles after clearing the bushes. The collected plastic carry bag from the reservoir was sent to a recycling plant, and the bushes were taken for converting it into organic manure. We will inspect the place after one-and-half months to check the condition of the cleaned reservoir and will restore the glory of Manachira, through proper maintenance.

Initiatives of programme officer 24 Life Style Detecting Camp To prevent at earlier stage

he change in the life style of the people especially in our state has resulted in many in to new diet practices which inturn have increased super specialty hospitals. We planned to conduct a life style disease detecting camps in order to bring awareness among the people especially Tin the new generation which is very fond of junk food items. The new diet practice is adversely affecting both the mind and body Only balanced & nutritious diet can keep the body and mind healthy . We know that a nation building is through healthy citizens and a wealthy nation has healthy citizens. Our NSS unit in collaboration with Malabar gold and diamonds, Iqara hospital and Snehaspar- sham conducted a Life style detecting camp at our campus, Kattuvayal and Kalluthankadavu col- ony. Our project was first started in the campus becauseas it consisted of young group of children and staff and we really wanted to know the real side effects of our newly in cooperated diet which is silent poisoning in to our traditional food practice. The resultof the test was shocking as it showed high level cholesterol, bloodpressure, Sugar, etc, in majority, which in future will result in to very dangerous diseases related to heart and kidney. Our two camps were in colonies, our volunteers went to the colonies and helped the needy and tried to find practical solution to the individual and community problem. The camp was conducted as a consideration for the people in colonies, where an early detection of the diseases will help them to cure it earlier. The doctors in the camp verified the results and they were referred for the supply of free medicines. About 70 to 80 people were consulted during each medical camp . The life style of the people in low class is also changing because we get junkor low nutrious food for cheaper rate and the chance of preference is higher. An awareness class was also given to make aware of the fact how modern food habits is becoming a weapon and destroying the nation. Initiatives of programme officer 25 BEST OUT OF WASTE PIPECOMPOSTING

socio economic health survey was conducted at Santhinagar colony ward no: 67 of KozhikodeCor- poration at our annual camp 2014-15. The total number of houses surveyed was 263. and according to the data collected and analysis the colony was facing many problems and out that we thought to Ado something for the lack of facility for proper waste management. At the valedictory function of the special camp 2014-15, Mr. A. Pradeep Kumar (MLA) was enlightened by the survey report and asked us to submit the survey report to the government authorities for further measurements and implementation of some of the basic needs. One of the most disappointing features of the surveyed household was lack of proper waste management about (50%) of the total, were found to be disposing waste through burning or throwing it away and 30 % of the total has no particular facility to disposing waste, 11% had compost pit and 9% had vermicomposting. The surroundings of the colony were in very severe dirty, unhygienic condition due to throwingof all types of waste. To find a solution for waste management we approached Mr. Pradeep Kumar MLAand he with whole hearted provided the fund to place pipe compost for 30 houses in the colony cost of 16000 and for 10 houses the fund was collected from the campus. The 100 NSS volunteers were able to place 40 pipe compost in one hour in the colony. We will proceed with the project providing pipe compost to other houses by man- aging fund collection from our campus. Initiatives of programme officer 26 Can bring a positive change in society faster through art freedom and creativity

he NSS day was celebrated by presenting a 20 minutes presentation through Theater Sketches which was epic drama style . The play showcased the real life situations of the present gen- eration. The performance was an eye opener to the young generation. The play presented Tthe role and responsibilities of women in the society. The women are the one who always faces the crisis than the other side, if it is war or any disaster. She is the one who bears the greatest hardships of life and weeps for the loss. The play related Nature and Women; both are always exploited by the society. The enthralling performance hit the minds and soul of the campus. The play was also presented in the University of Calicut during the visit of officials from Gover- nor’s office. It was highly appreciated by the officials and the audience. Last year ‘Kurathy ‘Kavyashilpam was presented as an innovation to the older description, this art put forward the sufferings, the exploitation, the suppression, fight for rights and justice of Women.
