Foot Adrienne Russell Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Communication University of Washington Abstract The Political Logic of the Radical Right Media Sphere in the United States Yunkang Yang Chair of the Supervisory Committee: W. Lance Bennett Department of Communication Democracy in America is threatened by an increased level of false information circulating through online media networks. Previous research has found that radical right media such as Fox News and Breitbart are the principal incubators and distributors of online disinformation. In this dissertation, I draw attention to their political mobilizing logic and propose a new theoretical framework to analyze major radical right media in the U.S. Contrasted with the old partisan media literature that regarded radical right media as partisan news organizations, I argue that media outlets such as Fox News and Breitbart are better understood as hybrid network organizations. This means that many radical right media can function as partisan journalism producers, disinformation distributors, and in many cases political organizations at the same time. They not only provide partisan news reporting but also engage in a variety of political activities such as spreading disinformation, conducting opposition research, contacting voters, and campaigning and fundraising for politicians. In addition, many radical right media are also capable of forming emerging political organization networks that can mobilize resources, coordinate actions, and pursue tangible political goals at strategic moments in response to the changing political environment.

  • June 2015 Honoring M
The Schwarz Report Dr. Fred Schwarz Volume 55, Number 6 Dr. David Noebel June 2015 Honoring M. Stanton Evans by Cliff Kincaid Those who assembled on March 12 at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Leesburg, Virginia, to celebrate the life of conservative thinker and writer M. Stanton Evans heard several references to his monumental 1994 work, The Theme is Freedom. This book is worth remembering and re-reading as we are being treated repeatedly to the spectacle in the media of “conservatives” endorsing gay rights and gay marriage. In an illustration of what Stan called the “pagan ethic,” he cites on page 128 “the campaign to change societal views of homosexuality—to treat it as an ‘alternative lifestyle,’ as valid in its way as heterosexual conduct.” Stan comments, “Among other things, this is a reversion to pagan ways of thinking.” He cites acceptance of homosexuality in ancient civilizations such as Babylon and notes, “All of this was unequivocally condemned by the religion of the Bible.” Yet, as Austin Ruse points out in his Breitbart article, “GOP Elite Ask Supreme Court to Impose Gay Marriage on America,” a brief to celebrate homosexual “marriage” as equal to traditional marriage has been submitted to the court and signed by 300 conservatives and/or Republicans, including no less than 26 former senior Mitt Romney staffers. These so-called “conservatives,” who are not conservative in any real sense, are part of a “Project Right Side” that is designed to confuse the public about the meaning of the term. The “media” section of the website tells us how news organizations have covered the “conservative case for gay marriage.” But there is nothing “conservative” about asking the Supreme Court to impose homosexual marriage on all 50 states.

However, individuals may also be incentivized to encrypt their identity signals to avoid detection by dissimilar receivers, particularly when such detection is costly. Using mathematical modeling, this idea has previously been formalized into a theory of covert signaling. In this paper, we provide the first empirical test of the theory of covert signaling in the context of political identity signaling surrounding the 2020 U.S. presidential elections. We use novel methods relying on differences in detection between ingroup and outgroup receivers to identify likely covert and overt signals on Twitter. We strengthen our experimental predictions with a new mathematical modeling and examine the usage of selected covert and overt tweets in a behavioral experiment. We find that people strategically adjust their signaling behavior in response to the political constitution of their audiences and the cost of being disliked, in accordance with the formal theory. Our results have implications for our understanding of political communication, social identity, pragmatics, hate speech, and the maintenance of cooperation in diverse populations.

  • Trump Base DA
Notes The Base DA — by Dana Randall, Director of Debate at Carrollton Sacred Heart. General Argument The Base DA is a “politics disadvantage” — it’s about the political consequences of the plan. This DA argues that there is a core group of Trump supporters, known as his “base,” who support the president primarily because of his stance on immigration. This base consists of people who are worried about economic competition with immigrants (they took our jobs), people who have safety/security concerns about immigration (build the wall), and people who oppose immigration for other reasons like nationalism/xenophobia. The disad argues that while Trump is/has become very unpopular with a lot of people because of other policy actions (tax cuts, Paris withdrawal, environmental deregulation etc) the base is primarily (or exclusively) concerned about immigration policy and thus these other issues have not “thumped” the disad. The link relies on characterizing the affirmative as “soft” on immigration, which is straightforward but slightly different for each case: • Open Borders — the easiest to argue the link. This aff removes ALL immigration restrictions, so links like “DACA” or “chain migration” obviously apply as does any other link. This case would trigger all of the base anxieties about immigration. • High Skilled Immigrants — while traditional, pro-business segments of the GOP would be in favor of high skilled immigration the base generally views any such policy as job competition. This is why Trump recently made H1-B visa applications far more cumbersome. • Refugees — since Trump recently had sessions change refugee policy, this affirmative can be cast as a “flip flop”, which is when a politician changes their stance on something.
