More 20 educational institutions under threat of collapse

https://www.thedailystar.net/country/news/erosion-devours-10-kurigram-schools-1973321 1/5 06/10/2020 Erosion devours 10 Kurigram schools | The Daily Star Erosion by the Brahmaputra, Teesta and Dharla rivers have devoured at least 10 government primary schools in different char areas under four upazilas of Kurigram in the last one month.
Four of the institutions are in Ulipur upazila, three in Chilmari, two in Rowmari, and one in Kurigram Sadar upazila.
According to Kurigram District Primary Education Office (DPEO), the schools that already went to the rivers womb are -- Char Krishnapur Government Primary School in Sadar upazila, Char Baladmari Government Primary School and Faluyar Char Government Primary School in Rowmari upazila, Uttar Khawriar Char Government Primary School, Char Mantola Government Primary School and Char Dighalkandi Government Primary School in Chilmari upazila, Char Juyan Satra Government Primary School, Char Nayadara Government Primary School, Char Khariza Latshala Government Primary School and Char Bazra Government Primary School in Ulipur upazila.
Meanwhile, around 20 more educational institutions in different char areas of the district are in danger of being washed away as the erosion took a serious turn and the three rivers continued devouring fresh areas.
District Primary Education Officer (DPEO) Shahidul Islam said at least 10 educational institutions have already been washed away by the three rivers while another 20 schools in different Char areas are also under threat of collapse at any time.
"We have received an emergency budget to re-build two government primary schools, devoured by the Brahmaputra river in Rowmari upazila," the DPEO said, adding that he has already sent another letter, seeking allocation of more fund to rebuild the other educational institutions that already collapsed in the rivers.
If the erosion continues, they may not be able to save some more schools from devouring, the DPEO said.
