IBAF HISTORY

The fi rst-ever international baseball event was a series of exhibition games that took place during the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis, MO. (USA). The exhibition was so successful that baseball, as an exhibition event, was repeated at the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm, . These two events laid the groundwork for the rise in popularity that the game saw internationally in the 1930s.

In 1936, a baseball exhibition was held at the Olympic Games in Berlin. This exhibition was an enormous success as 92,565 spectators fi lled the Olympic Stadium to watch a game between two American teams.

Following the success of Berlin, in August 1938, the fi rst Baseball World Cup was held in London. With the participation of just two teams, the and Great Britain, a series of fi ve games was played. The British team won four of the fi ve games. This was followed by the formation of the International Baseball Federation (IBF).

For many years following, the Baseball World Cup hosted only two to four countries at a time, but in 1950, international baseball had a breakthrough – the 11th Annual Baseball World Cup took place in Managua, , with a record participation of 12 countries. In what was the largest Baseball World Cup to date, was proclaimed champions.

Over the next 30 years, international baseball prospered throughout the world (highlighted by over 100,000 spectators taking in another baseball demonstration game at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne). As time went on, continents formed their own baseball federations and countries began creating and hosting their very own global tournaments, such as the Pan American Games and the Asian Championships. The game of baseball was growing at a rapid rate.

It was during this period of time that Cuba entrenched itself as an international baseball power. With countries all over the world striving to match their talent

6 YEARBOOK2011 level, baseball was being pushed further into the forefront of the worldwide sports scene and, by extension, into the minds of the International Olympic Committee.

When it was announced in early 1978 that the 1984 Olympic Games were to take place in , LA. (USA), Peter O’Malley, President and Owner of the , organized a meeting that was attended by virtually every IBAF HISTORY delegate from the 37 countries affi liated with the IBAF. The idea of baseball as a true fi xture in the Olympic Games was becoming a reality. in Los Angeles was the venue for the 1984 Olympic Baseball demonstration tournament, which was organized with the help of the big league club. The tournament, won by Japan, was watched by an average stadium crowd of 48,000, making baseball the third-most popular sport at the Olympic Games in terms of attendance.

On October 13, 1986, the efforts put forth in Los Angeles came to fruition when, at the International Olympic Committee Session in Lausanne, Switzerland, baseball was included in the offi cial programme of the 1992 Olympic Games to be hosted by , Spain.

In 1988, the USA won the last Olympic demonstration tournament at the Olympic Games in Seoul, and Cuba won the fi rst-ever Olympic gold medal for baseball at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. The silvers went to Japan and Chinese Taipei and the bronze went to respectively.

In June 1993, at a Congress in Rome, Aldo Notari of Italy was unanimously elected as President of the international baseball organization. He immediately took steps towards making a crucial change: transferring the corporate headquarters to the Olympic capital in Lausanne, Switzerland. This was a key move, clearly integrating baseball into the Olympic Movement.

Three years later, in 1996, the baseball tournament in the Atlanta Olympic Games topped its own record with 1,134,203 tickets sold. Cuba took home its second straight Olympic gold at the event, with Japan fi nishing with the silver and the USA with the bronze.

7 INTERNATIONAL BASEBALL FEDERATION FEDERACIÓN INTERNACIONAL DE BÉISBOL

In 1999, following an agreement between (MLB), the MLB Players Association (MLBPA) and the international federation to allow the participation of non-25-man roster professional players in the Sydney Games, the federation decided to return to its roots and changed its name to the International Baseball Federation (IBAF). IBAF HISTORY With the inclusion of professional players, the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games baseball tournament was a tremendous success as 97.44 percent of capacity was averaged over the event’s 32 games. There were two fi rsts in this Games – one, the Olympic gold medal went to the United States (Cuba garnered the silver and , the bronze) and two, the tournament featured teams from fi ve continents, illustrating the growth of baseball internationally.

In the eight years since Sydney, baseball has seen many more positive changes. In 2002, the fi rst ever FISU World University Baseball Championships were played, and the IBAF approved the inception of the Women’s Baseball World Cup. Both events have gone on to see much success, and both were be played in 2008 in the Czech Republic and Japan, respectively.

2004 was a year of ups and downs for the sport. The year was highlighted by Cuba’s gold medal in the Olympic Games in , . Australia took home the silver for its fi rst Olympic baseball medal and Japan earned the bronze. Prior to the Olympic Games, however, baseball had learned that by the narrowest of margins, it had been voted off the Olympic Programme for the London Games of 2012 and 2016 games.

Since then, as part of a global effort to return baseball to the program, Major League Baseball has created a new event, the World Baseball Classic (sanctioned by the IBAF), that features professional players from all over the world in a truly international event held prior to the start of the regular season. In 2006 the fi rst World Baseball Classic was held in the United States, with Japan winning the gold medal.

8 YEARBOOK2011

The Second edition of the World Baseball Classic was held in 2009. The tournament grew in size in both commercially and in terms of its global fan base and featured a multi country, multi city tournament setup, with the fi rst round of the classic being entirely held outside the United States. Japan emerged the winner over South Korea, with the United States and the other semi fi nalists. IBAF HISTORY

2009 also featured the IBAF . The event being played across seven European countries, rather than in Cuba where it was originally scheduled to be played. The tournament saw the United States emerge victorious over Cuba, however equally as important demonstrated the fan-base for the game in Europe.

The conclusion of the 2009 tournament schedule also heralded a new era for the International Baseball Federation with the election of Riccardo Fraccari as President. Fraccari and his executive through new initiatives, including outreach, multimedia efforts and a new Web site (IBAF.org), look to greatly increase the relevance of the organisation to the global sports community and the global baseball community.

In conjunction with the improved relevance of the organisation, President Fraccari also has looked to improve the relationship with Major League Baseball, Nippon , South Korean and Chinese Taipei professional baseball to enhance game development and overhaul the international tournament schedule. This will include an expansion to the World Baseball Classic to include qualifi cation, making the tournament available to up to 32 competing teams. 2013 is the next scheduled World Baseball Classic.

2011 will also see an IBAF Baseball World Cup, to be held in Panama in September. The tournament is expected to see elite professional compete.

79 INTERNATIONAL BASEBALL FEDERATION FEDERACIÓN INTERNACIONAL DE BÉISBOL

HISTORY OF BASEBALL IN THE OLYMPIC GAMES

Baseball made its debut on the Olympic stage as a demonstration sport at Stockholm in 1912. As popular as baseball was at those Olympic Games and in Melbourne 44 years later where it set the baseball single-game attendance record with over 100,000 spectators, it was not until the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games that baseball was fully embraced as an Olympic staple.

Following the Los Angeles Games, and Cuba’s to the gold, baseball was added to the Olympic Programme by the International Olympic Committee. Although not offi cially on the programme until 1992, the world watched as the Americans took the gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.

Since then, Cuba has reigned over the Olympic baseball scene, winning the golds in the Barcelona (ESP) 1992 Olympic Games, the 1996 Games in Atlanta, GA. (USA) and in 2004 in Athens (GRE). The Cubans took silver to the United States in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney (AUS). In the process, baseball has grown into one of the most popular sports in the Olympic Games.

The Beijing Olympic Games of 2008, for now, is the last time baseball will see a gold medal game. With the International Olympic Committee voting baseball off the Olympic Programme for the 2012 London Games and 2016 Rio Di Janeiro Games, the IBAF is now looking to create a path to return to the Olympic Games as a full Medal Sport, with the newly created Olympic Reinstatement Commission tasked with determining the direction. The commission will be led by President Fraccari and will feature prominent people from both within and around the baseball community. The aim is to have baseball back as a full medal sport for the 2020 games.

WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC

The World Baseball Classic (WBC) is a new event that was created by the Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association, and is sanctioned by the IBAF. This event was created as a tribute to the growth and popularity of baseball on an international level. What makes the event unique is that it is the only venue in which the top-level professional players from every participating country compete. The inaugural event in 2006 took place in Puerto Rico, Japan and the United States. Japan won the fi rst-ever World Baseball Classic by defeating Cuba 10-6, while South Korea topped the Dominican Republic to take home the bronze, both of which were played to record crowds.

The second edition of the World Baseball Classic was held in 2009 in Japan, Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico and USA and Japan captured second straight WBC titles, defeating South Korea 5-3 in 10 in the fi nal. Venezuela secured the bronze recording 6 wins and 2 loses while USA 4 wins and 4 loses.

IBAF BASEBALL WORLD CUP

The IBAF Baseball World Cup (BWC) is an international event that is sanctioned by the IBAF. In 1938, the United States and Great Britain were the only teams involved in the inaugural event, with Great Britain defeating the USA in four of the fi ve games to win the gold medal. With an increasing fan base, the BWC continued to grow, and from 1950 on, the event became a fi xture within the international baseball community.

As the BWC grew, so did the level by which Cuba dominated. The international power has medaled in 29 of the 37 tournaments and leads all countries in gold medal fi nishes with 25. The United States and Venezuela are tied for second in gold medals with three.

The United States won the 2007 IBAF Baseball World Cup title for only the third time ever, beating Cuba 6-3 in the fi nal. This was the fi rst time that the United States won the Baseball World Cup when Cuba was also competing in the event. Cuba, going for its 10th straight Baseball World Cup championship, came in second while Japan shutout the Netherlands in the bronze medal match, 5-0. The United States’ lone loss of the tournament came in a 6-2 upset loss to Italy.

The 2009 IBAF Baseball World Cup was held in Italy and throughout 6 other Europena countries. The United States defended its Baseball World Cup title, with a 10-5 victory over Cuba. Canada defeated Puerto Rico in the bronze medal game, taking the fi rst medal home for Canada in the IBAF Baseball World Cups. The tournament was also recognized as “green” event, looking to promote the sustainable practices in the fi eld of event management.

The next IBAF Baseball World Cup is scheduled in the fall of 2011 in Panama and 16 teams are expected to compete for the Baseball World Cup title.

In 2010, Chinese Taipei defeated Australia 8-4 in the gold medal game of the IBAF 18U Baseball World Championship, while Cuba took its second ever bronze medal. The results differed vastly from the last two 18U championships, where South Korea secured the gold, but the Baseball Federation of Asia representatives nevertheless continue to excel in this category, taking the last 3 gold medals. Cuba, however, still leads all countries with 11 gold medals, dating back to the tournament’s inception (1981).

In its fi rst year – in 2004 – the IBAF Women’s Baseball World Cup featured fi ve nations, with the United States securing the gold medal by beating Japan in the fi nals. In 2006, the number of participating teams increased, illustrating the growth of the sport internationally among the female athlete’s community. With more fans in attendance than ever before, seven teams participated in Taipei to see the United States take the gold, again defeating Japan in the fi nal. In 2008, participating teams increased to 8 and the host team, Japan, won the gold medal. In 2010, Japan repeated as champions, as participation increased again to 10 teams: Japan, Australia, USA, Venezuela, Canada, Cuba, Chinese Taipei, Puerto Rico, South Korea and Netherlands.
