PREFACE My interest in bird-lore began in my own home in Scotland, and was fostered by the opportunities that came to me in my wanderings about my native land. On my arrival in South Africa in 19117, it was further quickened by the prospect of gathering much new material in a propitious field. My first fellow-workers in the fascinating study of Native bird-lore were the daughters of my predecessor at Pirie, Dr. Bryce Ross, and his grandson Mr. Join% Ross. In addition, a little arm y of school-boys gathered birds for me, supplying the Native names, as far as they knew them, for the specimens the y brought. In 1910, after lecturing at St. Matthew's on our local birds, I was made adjudicator in an essay-competition on the subject, and through these essays had my knowledge considerably extended. My further experience, at Somerville and Blythswood, and my growing correspondence, enabled me to add steadily to my material ; and in 1929 came a great opportunit y for unifying my results.

    Environmental Scoping Study for the proposed extension of the 765 kV Hydra Substation and the proposed construction of an additional 765 kV Transmission power line between the Hydra and Gamma Substations, Northern Cape Province 6. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY AREA ENVIRONMENT The existing Hydra Substation and Gamma Substations lie approximately 130 km apart, and are separated by a generally flat landscape, interrupted in the northern section by high broken ground and small ridges, and the Bulberg and Horseshoe Ridges in the south close to the Gamma Substation site. The broader study area falls within the Northern Cape Province and extends from the existing Hydra Substation near De Aar to the south near Victoria West, where the Gamma Substation is located. 6.1 Topography The study area is located within a generally flat area interrupted at intervals by a number of hills and ridges. The height above sea level, of the study area ranges from 1300 m to 1800 m. Prominent ridges within the study area the include Bulberg Ridge, located north of the Gamma Substation site and the Horseshoe Ridge located in the south close to the Gamma Substation site. Other ridges and hills in the study area include the Platberg, Nooinberg, Groot and the Tafelberg ridge. There are no ridges located within the proposed 80 m servitude. 6.2 Climatic Conditions Based on the information recorded in the Victoria West area, the average annual rainfall for the Victoria West region is 328 mm. The maximum total rainfall recorded in one day is 131 mm. Average annual rainfall for the De Aar region as recorded at the De Aar weather station is 331,4 mm with a total maximum rainfall recorded in one day of 112 mm.

    46 STRATEGIC MILITARY COLONISATION: THE CAPE EASTERN FRONTIER 1806–1872 Linda Robson* and Mark Oranje† Department of Town and Regional Planning, University of Pretoria Abstract The Cape Eastern Frontier of South Africa offers a fascinating insight into British military strategy as well as colonial development. The Eastern Frontier was for over 100 years a very turbulent frontier. It was the area where the four main population groups (the Dutch, the British, the Xhosa and the Khoikhoi) met, and in many respects, key decisions taken on this frontier were seminal in the shaping of South Africa. This article seeks to analyse this frontier in a spatial manner, to analyse how British settlement patterns on the ground were influenced by strategy and policy. The time frame of the study reflects the truly imperial colonial era, from the second British occupation of the Cape colony in 1806 until representative self- governance of the Cape colony in 1872. Introduction British colonial expansion into the Eastern Cape of Southern Africa offers a unique insight into the British method of colonisation, land acquisition and consolidation. This article seeks to analyse the British imperial approach to settlement on a turbulent frontier.     Phase 1 Palaeontological Impact Assessment of 2 Quarries and 6 Borrow Pits, between Willowvale and Dwesa, EC Province. Report prepared for: CCS Environmental Consultants. Dr Lloyd Rossouw PO Box 38806 Langenhovenpark 9330 Executive Summary A Phase 1 Palaeontological Impact Assessment was carried out at a two quarries and six borrow pit sites between Willowvale and Dwesa in the Eastern Cape. Quarry 1 and 2 are exclusively doleritic and therefore not palaeontologically significant. Borrow Pit 1 and 3 are located in Adelaide Subgroup strata, while an intrusive dolerite outcrop (dyke) and Adelaide Subgroup metasediments are represented at Borrow Pit 2. Borrow Pits 4, 5 and 6 are located in older Ecca Group strata. No fossils or trace fossils were located near or in the vicinity of the borrow pits during the baseline survey. The survey of exposed strata has indicated no evidence for potential palaeontological impact. There is no indication for the accumulation and preservation of intact fossil material within the Quaternary sediments (topsoils) covering the underlying sedimentary rocks. 2 Introduction At the request of Control Civil Services, a Palaeontological Impact Assessment was carried out along designated areas between Willowvale and Dwesa in the Eastern Cape with the aim to investigate six borrow pit localities and two quarries that will be utilized to maintain and rehabilitate the gravel road infrastructure in the region. The survey is required as a prerequisite for new development in terms of the National Environmental Management Act and is also called for in terms of the National Heritage Resources Act 25 of 1999. In terms of Section 38 of the National Heritage Resources Act 25 of 1999 the survey is required as a prerequisite for any development which will change the character of a site exceeding 5 000 m2 in extent.
