The documents, which include a typed notice issued to IWM staff in 1939, titled ‘Procedure in the event of war,’ and part of a collection priority list dated 1938, are among 15 documents, paintings, objects, films and sculptures that will be displayed as part of Art in Exile (5 July 2019 – 5 January 2020). At the outbreak of the Second World War, a very small proportion of IWM’s collection was chosen for special evacuation, including just 281works of art and 305 albums of photographs. This accounted for less than 1% of IWM’s entire collection and 7% of IWM’s art collection at the time, which held works by prominent twentieth- century artists including William Orpen, John Singer Sargent, Paul Nash and John Lavery. UNIVERSITY OF YORK HISTORY OF ART SEPTEMBER 2016 ABSTRACT Began as a compositional analysis of the oil-on-canvas portraits painted by John Singer Sargent, this thesis uses a selection of those images to relate national identity, cultural and social history within cosmopolitan British and American high society between 1890 and 1910. Close readings of a small selection of Sargent’s portraits are used in order to undertake an in-depth analysis on the particular figural details and decorative elements found within these images, and how they can relate to nation-specific ideologies and issues present at the turn of the century. Thorough research was undertaken to understand the prevailing social types and concerns of the period, and biographical data of individual sitters was gathered to draw larger inferences about the prevailing ideologies present in America and Britain during this tumultuous era. Issues present within class and family structures, the institution of marriage, the performance of female identity, and the formulation of masculinity serve as the topics for each of the four chapters. These subjects are interrogated and placed in dialogue with Sargent’s visual representations of his sitters’ identities. Popular images of the era, both contemporary and historic paintings, as well as photographic prints are incorporated within this analysis to fit Sargent’s portraits into a larger art historical context. All the works are from UCL Art Museum’s Slade Collection and I’ve been fortunate enough to work on various projects for UCL Art Museum, the most recent of which was Spotlight on the Slade Collections, a Paul Mellon Centre funded project which ran for three years between 2015-2018 - to catalogue and research the Slade collections. But this evening, I’m going to tell you a bit about the collection and its background, and about the works in this room. My talk will be in two parts – I’ll start with a brief, 10 minute introduction to the room and the works and then give you an opportunity to have a wander around before telling you a bit more about the prize system at the Slade and the works in this room.     This is an Author's Accepted Manuscript of an article published in Visual Culture in Britain , 14 November 2012, copyright Taylor & Francis, available online at: http://www.tandfonline.com DOI :10.1080/14714787.2012.716980 Staging the modernist self: the self-portraits of William Orpen Angeria Rigamonti di Cutò Independent scholar, London Abstract One of the most financially successful and honoured painters of the twentieth century, William Orpen’s reputation, now diminished, rests predominantly on his accomplished society portraits and war paintings. Yet Orpen (1873-1931) also produced an extensive body of compelling self-portraits, depicting himself in a variety of guises that mark diverse performances of his ‘self’. This neglected area of Orpen’s production stands apart from his distinctly official works as the painter of the British establishment and war artist and as such merits attention for its singular engagement with the modernist self. I consider Orpen’s self-portraits as the visual equivalent of autobiography and autobiografiction, drawing on modernist literary examples for comparison, with a particular focus on Ford Madox Ford’s The Good Soldier. I also analyse a range of images to investigate how Orpen could engage with, satirize, mask, elaborate and fantasize his identities in these works. While a comparison with historically specific notions of selfhood can illuminate Orpen’s visual autobiography, I also consider the role played by his own biography in the questioning and staging of his own identity. Consistently characterized by critics as a great draughtsman yet frequently condemned for a lack of intellectual curiosity, I argue that Orpen, away from his official status, was intensely engaged in elaborating and examining his identities through self-portraits that also connect with a modernist preoccupation with the very process of creating art.

Abstract: The Irish painter William Orpen (1878-1931), defined here as Ireland’s most ‘Spanish’ painter, was out of fashion for fifty years after his death; but he has recently been dramatically revalued, with his works fetching huge prices in salerooms and an unprecedentedly large exhibition of his work being mounted in London and subsequently Dublin. Best known for his Edwardian portraits and his devastating paintings of the First World War, he also produced a series of allegorical paintings of his native Ireland. These are discussed in this article, and linked to his admiration for J.M.Synge, his dislike of clericalism and repression in Irish life, and his celebration of sensuality. The same themes lie behind ‘Homage to Manet’, a celebrated group portrait which includes the Irish novelist George Moore and the art collector Hugh Lane —a close friend of Orpen’s. Orpen knew other figures of the cultural Revival, and his relation to them is discussed; as is the conflict of identity he experienced (like other middle-class Irish Protestants) when the radicalisation of Irish politics and the outbreak of the First World War put a new strain on the allegiances of people who had previously thought of themselves as both ‘British’ and ‘Irish’.

[sheet] The younger sister of Alice Knewstub, the wife of the painter William Rothenstein, Grace Knewstub (1877-1948) first met William Orpen in the summer of 1899, when she, Orpen, Augustus John and Charles Conder joined the newly married Rothensteins on holiday in Normandy. Both Orpen and John fell in love with Grace, and she maintained a correspondence with the former throughout the winter of 1899-1900. She first posed for Orpen in 1900, and the two were married in August 1901, with Grace becoming one of his most faithful models. The present sheet is a preparatory study for Orpen’s three-quarter length double portrait of himself and Grace painted in 1901, the year of their wedding, and shown at the Society of Portrait Painters exhibition at the New Gallery in London that year. (The present whereabouts of the painting are unknown.) As Orpen’s biographer Bruce Arnold noted of the artist, ‘He painted a large canvas of himself and Grace, side by side. A study for this double portrait was included subsequently in the Carfax exhibition as No.7, ‘Two Portraits’ priced at £6, while the painting was sent in to the Society of Portrait Painters, Orpen’s first work to be exhibited with that group. Evelyn was the daughter of the wealthy American businessman and founder of the Bank of America, George Fisher Baker. In 1891 , against her father’s wishes, she married Herbert St George, an Irish land agent from County Kilkenny, It was there in 1905 in the lonely world of Edwardian Dublin that Evelyn met Orpen, and by 1908 they had embarked on a passionate love affair. Evelyn was not only Orpen’s lover; she was also his muse, his greatest admirer and most constructively outspoken critic of his work. She instilled in the young artist a great personal confidence that inspired him to create some of his very greatest works from that date, many of which were stylish swagger portraits of her and her daughter Gardenia, including Portrait of Gardenia St George with Riding Crop of 1909 . At their best these works rivalled those by John Singer Sargent and firmly established Orpen as one of the most important painters of the Edwardian era. This elegant rococo scene is typical of Martin’s work, much of which Brush with sepia ink over touches is better known through his decorative prints and many of which were of pencil, 22 by 24 cm Provenance: the Sabin Galleries both drawn and engraved by the artist. 2 George Richmond RA (1809-1896) These two studies relate to a portrait by Richmond of Ruskin dating from 1857 when Ruskin was 38. The artist and sitter had originally met in Rome in 1840 and were close friends afterwards. Ruskin liked Richmond who ‘confirms my first impression of him. He is a most gentlemanly man, and of fine mind’ (quoted in Dearden, op. cit., p.28). These sketches were the result of seven sittings for the 1857 portrait between 24th February and mid March of that year.
