I would like to thank Lanie Farrelly for the wonderful work she had done on the Bornman family and allowing me to publish Volume 3 of Johannes Jurgens Borman, 1813-1884, on her website. This family register is not without its mistakes. If you do find any mistakes please let me know, and if you do have any source documents to prove your point, even better. Any labeled photos or documents are very welcome. Remember it is not my Family Register, it belongs to all of us that can proudly call ourselves Borman’s. On this day I would like to dedicate my speech to a fallen hero who was described as a ‘selfless revolutionist’ who died for his political beliefs. Serious tensions followed after his assassination, with fears that the country would erupt into violence. Former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela addressed the nation appealing for a calm mood, I quote: “Tonight I am reaching out to every single South African, black and white, from the very depths of my being.

  • The Imperial Map Cape Colony and Later Military Maps of the Cape Colony, South Africa
The Imperial Map Cape Colony and later military maps of the Cape Colony, South Africa. Dr Christopher Board formerly Senior Lecturer in Geography, London School of Economics Abstract Attempts to compile maps for military use in the Cape Colony during the Anglo-Boer War 1899- 1902 left a legacy of incomplete and unstandardised mapping at the scale of 1:250,000 known as the Imperial Map Cape Colony. Aware of the need for good mapping to permit satisfactory administration and defence a congress of interested parties agreed in 1904 to a scheme for topographic mapping South Africa based on geodetic survey. Economic problems put an end to this project, but the War Office considered the NW Cape Colony worthy of a reconnaissance map at 1:250,000 which they would fund. Thus a special section of the War Office’s map of Africa G.S.G.S.1764 was designed and produced in a military version and as sales editions. The paper documents the progress of the survey and compilation of this map using surviving maps and other archival material in the UK. Introduction British military mapping of a large part of the Cape Colony, South Africa was achieved in great haste to meet the requirements of a mobile army in unfamiliar and poorly mapped, mostly open country at the end of the 19th century. The Imperial Map Cape Colony was compiled to meet the need for a map for planning and executing military operations, to deal with guerrilla war in the Colony itself. It was compiled from mapping available in the Surveyor General’s Department, supplemented by local observation and intelligence reports.

At least three of the proposed routes will have a serious impact on the cultural and historical heritage resources and visual impact on the farm Jackalskuil 21, Pertusville, Northern Cape. Archaeological material occur in the form of an elaborate collection of stone flakes and scrapers from the Later Stone Age (Smithfield), a unique assemblage of bored stones, a variety of single and multi-grooved lower grinding stones, upper grinders and many rock engravings. A stone-wall of over 5km in length dating from the 1870s and a farm house that was built after 1920 will also be affected. The land is presently managed as a game farm where hunters from overseas are received and entertained. The proposed power line will likewise cause an important disturbance and will have a visual impact on the hunting business, which could harm the tourism potential of the farm. To accommodate the landowner's interests as well as the requirements of Eskom Transmission, I recommend that alternative four (4) of the proposed corridor routes should be investigated for possible implementation.

  • Proposed Soventix Solar Pv Project on Various Farms Near Hanover, Enthanjeni Municipality, Pixley Ka Seme District, Northern Cape
1 PALAEONTOLOGICAL HERITAGE REPORT: COMBINED DESKTOP & FIELD-BASED ASSESSMENT PROPOSED SOVENTIX SOLAR PV PROJECT ON VARIOUS FARMS NEAR HANOVER, ENTHANJENI MUNICIPALITY, PIXLEY KA SEME DISTRICT, NORTHERN CAPE Dr John E. Almond Natura Viva cc PO Box 12410 Mill Street CAPE TOWN 8010, RSA February 2021 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Soventix South Africa (Pty) Ltd is proposing to develop a 300 MW solar PV plant with infrastructure for the battery storage (BESS), gas turbines and fuel storage on various farms located between Hanover and De Aar, Enthanjeni Municipality, Pixley Ka Seme District, Northern Cape. The proposed Soventix PV plant project area is underlain by Late Permian continental sediments of the Lower Beaufort Group (Adelaide Subgroup), Karoo Supergroup. So far very few vertebrate or other fossils have been recorded in this region of the Great Karoo, in part because of the thick mantle of alluvial sediments covering most of the potentially-fossiliferous bedrocks. Two successive palaeontological field surveys of the project area confirm that bedrock exposures are very limited indeed here while the Karoo sediments have been intruded and baked by several dolerite intrusions (sills & dykes) and are often modified by near-surface weathering and calcrete veining. No palaeontological No-Go areas or highly-sensitive fossil sites have been identified within the project area of the Soventix solar PV plant. Apart from questionable fossil invertebrate burrows, the only fossils recorded comprise (1) locally common, small blocks of well- preserved petrified wood that have been reworked from the Beaufort Group bedrocks into overlying, semi-consolidated alluvial sediments and (2) very rare tetrapod bones and teeth.
