  • Patriarchy Strikes Back: Power and Perception in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
PATRIARCHY STRIKES BACK: POWER AND PERCEPTION IN BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Nadine Farghaly A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2009 Committee: Maisha Wester, Advisor Piya Pal Lapinski © 2006 Nadine Farghaly All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Maisha Wester, Advisor Primetime heroine Buffy Summers conquered the hearts of layman and scholars alike. For years audience members have debated about almost everything that happens in Buffy the Vampire Slayer; from opening credits to wardrobes over music choices to gender issues. This thesis focuses on patriarchal power structures inside Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On the surface, BtVS proposes all the ingredients for a truly matriarchal show; it could have been the perfect series to offer a glimpse at what a female-dominated society could look like. Unfortunately, however, the series’ creator, Joss Whedon, fails to create a female character liberated from patriarchal influences. He not only reintroduces patriarchal figures and apparatuses again and again, but he also constrains his heroine to adopt the same power structures his male characters employ. Despite the fact that almost every member of the patriarchy embodies certain flaws, that make it possible to partially dismantle their authority, Whedon continues to introduce these problematic figures. This thesis illustrates how patriarchal institutions and their members assert power over the female body in BtVS by synthesizing examples from both the television series and the graphic novel series with the critical cultural theories of Michel Foucault, Max Weber, and John Bowlby. iv To my Scoobies—you know why… v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I want to thank all the people who dedicated hours of their life helping me when I was ready to give up and whose presence has enriched my stay in the United States beyond my expectations.

  • Amelia Bloomer List 2010--Introduction
Amelia Bloomer List 2010--Introduction Since 2002, when the Amelia Bloomer Project published its first bibliography of feminist books for young readers, American culture has undergone radical change. During this decade, many in U.S. society turned their backs on the ideals of equality and tried to return to the restrictive attitudes of the 1950s, reveling in a backlash that attempts to roll back Social Security and Medicare as well as passing laws that limit women’s rights to our own bodies. Although the inauguration of President Barack Obama, just one year ago, raised hopes that the anti-women excesses of the previous administration would be overcome, conservative rhetoric co-opting feminist arguments remains deeply engrained in U.S. society. Purity balls “empower” pre-teen and teenage girls to promise their virginity to their fathers as these children pledge to abstain from sex until they are married. So-called crisis pregnancy centers deliberately set up shop near high schools with the intention to counsel young women against having abortions. A U.S. Army Major General commanding U.S. forces in Northern Iraq added pregnancy to the list of prohibitions, with punishments that include courts martial. At the same time, the U.S. military has made few provisions to protect women soldiers from rape and sexual assault by other U.S. soldiers. On the global scale, sex trafficking in girls and young women has increased. Women in Afghanistan and Iraq have lost almost all civil rights since the beginnings of the American invasions of their countries. At the same time, increasing poverty on a global scale has disproportionately affected women and the children for whom they care.

  • How Audiences Engage with Narrative Across Multiple Story Modes
Consuming Transmedia: how audiences engage with narrative across multiple story modes. By Emma Beddows A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Faculty of Life and Social Sciences, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia 2012 i Student Declaration I, Emma Beddows, declare that the examinable outcome: Contains no material which has been accepted for the award to the candidate of any other degree or diploma, except where due reference is made in the text of the examinable outcome. To the best of my knowledge contains no material previously published or written by another person except where due reference is made in the text of the examinable outcome; and Where the work is based on joint research or publications, discloses the relative contributions of the respective workers or authors. Signed: 2012 i ii Abstract Research in the field of transmedia storytelling, variously known as ‘cross-media’ (Dena 2004a, 2004b), ‘distributed narration’ (Walker 2004) and ‘transmedia practice’ (Dena 2009) has grown steadily over the past ten years. As new content distribution models emerge from the creative industries it is essential that we consider how users engage with these new frameworks. Whilst many scholars acknowledge the consumption of transmedia texts, few studies detail reception of these texts using practical or qualitative measures. This thesis aims to address this issue via a synthesis of theoretical concerns and practical analysis. Commercial transmedia storytelling presents significant opportunities for audience research because it seeks to exploit the migratory consumption patterns of media users by replicating user-led traversals in a highly structured commercial environment.
