[Queen Bitch] David Robert Jones was born on January 8 1947 in Brixton London England. Though he showed musical interest at a young age it was only in the early 60s that he really pursued the art. He started by joining several blues bands but branched off on his own when they had little success. Renaming himself David Bowie he released his self-titled debut in 1967. [Who's that hiding in the apple tree clinging to a branch] Its lack of success led Bowie to participate in a promotional film called Love you till Tuesday which showcased several of his songs. A particular interest was Space Oddity : that track became a hit after it was released at the same time as the first moon landing. [Ground control to Major Tom] His sophomore effort of the same name however was another commercial disappointment. [The man who sold the world] To promote his third album The man who sold the world, Bowie was put in a dress to capitalize on his androgynous look. [Life on mars] [Ziggy Stardust] In 1971 a pop influenced record called Hunky-Dory came out and was followed by the creation of his flamboyant Ziggy Stardust persona and stage show with backing band The Spiders from Mars. Then came his breakthrough record The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which climbed the charts thanks to his performance of the single Star Man on Top of the Pops.

David Bowie: A Case Study of Authenticity in the Multifaceted Artist Candidate Number: 1601748 Supervisor: Dr. Geoff Baker Royal Holloway, University of London BMus (Hons) MU3391 Special Study: Dissertation 2016 Turnitin Number: 56606277 Word Count: 10, 963 2016 David Bowie: A Case Study of Authenticity in the Multifaceted Artist Abstract This dissertation draws attention to a central issue: There are limits in the applicability of “traditional” definitions of authenticity from popular music discourse. In defining authentic artists as those displaying a true sense of themselves, others and their culture, multifaceted artists, who rarely boast these qualities, are at once dismissed. Yet to one’s mind, these sorts of artists are authentic and these definitions fail to do them justice. To tackle this issue, using David Bowie, a widely acclaimed multifaceted artist, as its case study, first the “traditional” definitions are introduced and applied. Through this it is concluded that they are applicable only in part, and so not applicable consistently enough to be deemed good definitions for multifaceted artists. Following this, the characteristics of the multifaceted artist that make it difficult to apply “traditional” definitions are identified, and alternative definitions of authenticity that complement these characteristics are brought in and applied. These approaches beg the question that perhaps the issue lies not in the multifaceted nature of some artists, but with authenticity itself. Subsequently, it is submitted that authenticity itself is a limiting concept, because of its polysemous nature, and that the definitions are problematic and subjective, because they are based on the self (including the other) and culture, both subjective concepts.

However, much of the academic writing on Bowie has chosen to focus only on these works and ignores his more recent material. David Bowie is In partnership with Gucci Sound experience by Sennheiser 23 March – 11 August 2013 The V&A has been given unprecedented access to the David Bowie Archive to curate the first international retrospective of the extraordinary career of David Bowie – one of the most pioneering and influential performers of modern times. David Bowie is explores the creative processes of Bowie as a musical innovator and cultural icon, tracing his shifting style and sustained reinvention across five decades. The V&A’s Theatre and Performance curators, Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh, have selected more than 300 objects that have been brought together for the very first time. They include handwritten lyrics, original costumes, fashion, photography, film, music videos, set designs, Bowie’s own instruments and album artwork. The V&A takes an in-depth look at how David Bowie’s music and radical individualism has both influenced and been influenced by wider movements in art, design and contemporary culture. The exhibition also demonstrates how he has inspired others to challenge convention and pursue freedom of expression. The exhibition explores the broad range of Bowie’s collaborations with artists and designers in the fields of fashion, sound, graphics, theatre, art and film. On display are more than 60 stage- costumes including Ziggy Stardust bodysuits (1972) designed by Freddie Burretti, Kansai Yamamoto’s flamboyant creations for the Aladdin Sane tour (1973) and the Union Jack coat designed by Bowie and Alexander McQueen for the Earthling album cover (1997). Also on show is photography by Brian Duffy, Terry O’Neill and Masayoshi Sukita; album sleeve artwork by Guy Peellaert and Edward Bell; cover proofs by Barnbrook for the latest album The Next Day (2013); visual excerpts from films and live performances including The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) and Saturday Night Live (1979); music videos such as Boys Keep Swinging (1979) and Let’s Dance (1983) and set designs created for the Diamond Dogs tour (1974).
