Bible Study Outline

THEME: COVENANT WITH THE LIVING GOD SUB-THEME: Family and Covenant with the living God (8) TOPIC: The Bane of godly family—Disunity TEXT: Gen 37:1-11 AIMS: i. to teach the dangers of disunity in a godly family, ii. to highlight some factors that cause disunity in the family and iii. to Identify biblical ways to prevent disunity.

INTRODUCTION

There is great distress or frustration when disunity or lack of agreement among any people prevents them from working or living together effectively. Disunity is one of the major reasons for the setback of the human family. Going through the story of the children of Jacob, we observe that disunity eventually caused chaos, hatred, and bitter jealousy. God wants us to be united (1Cor. 1:10). What are the causes of disunity in a godly family?

STUDY GUIDES

1. What is disunity and mention some factors of disunity in a godly family. Gen 21:9-14; 37:3- 4;

2. Mention some contemporary causes of disunity in the church of Christ. Jam 4:1;

3. Practically discuss how disunity is threatening the peace of many families (nuclear or extended) today and how this can be avoided? Genesis 13:7-12; Gal. 5:16; Ephesians 4:31-32; 1Tim 6:6.

4. What does God expect of all godly families? Gen 45:4-5; Leviticus 19:17-18; Romans 12:16. CONCLUSION: Disunity is the bane of effective and successful social co-existence. When we have contentment, humility, forgiveness and we live by the Spirit, then we can produce both godly families and a peaceful world. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: A house divided against itself cannot stand.

MEMORY VERSE: Rom 12:16 “Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits”.

SPIRITUAL TONIC FOR THE WEEK Psalm 115: 14-15

“May the LORD make you increase, both you and your children. May you be blessed by the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.”

O my Father, like Jabez I cry to You today; increase me and my children, enlarge our coasts and bless us with Your heavenly bounties. Destroy every hinderance to our blessing and advancement. Uphold us in the victory You won for us to the shame of our enemies. Thank You Father, In Jesus name I pray (Amen).

ON THE OTHER SIDE An atheist is taking a hike through the woods when a huge bear starts chasing after him. The bear corners the atheist in a cave and he falls on his knees, shouting, ‘Lord, save me!’ God calls down, saying, ‘You hypocrite. All these years you’ve denied me and now you want my help.’ The atheist replies, ‘You’re right. It is hypocritical to proclaim myself a Christian after all these years, but could you meet me halfway and make the bear a Christian.’ ‘I suppose so,’ says God and gives the bear religion. The atheist breathes a huge breath and walks past the startled bear. The bear turns and bites the atheist in the neck, killing him. The bear then puts its paws together and says, ‘Lord, for this bounty...’

PRAYER FOR THE YEAR

Heavenly Father, what a privilege and joy it is to have the freedom to draw near to Your throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find help in time of need. We thank You for the days of our lives - the past, the present and the future - they are all in Your hand. Father as the days get darker and wickedness increases, we ask that Your presence will go with us in all our journeys; grant us wisdom and courage to face the time and tides of this year, empower us with Your strength and make us victorious in all our battles - physical and spiritual, through the merit of the Captains of our Salvation, Jesus Christ our Lord. (Amen).

STANDING ON THE PROMISES OF CHRIST MY KING SS&S 877 Tune: Standing on the promises of Christ, my King 1. Standing on the promises of Christ, my King, Through eternal ages let his praises ring; Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing, Standing on the promises of God.

Standing, standing, Standing on the promises of God, my Savior; Standing, standing, I’m standing on the promises of God.

2. Standing on the promises that cannot fail. When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, By the living Word of God I shall prevail, Standing on the promises of God.

3. Standing on the promises I now can see Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free Standing on the promises of God.

4. Standing on the promises of Christ, the Lord, Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord, Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s sword, Standing on the promises of God.

5. Standing on the promises I cannot fall, Listening every moment to the Spirit’s call, Resting in my Saviour as my All in all, Standing on the promises of God.

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3

Alexander the Great is known as one of the greatest generals in all history. He created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching from Greece to north-western India, by subduing rival armies in the Greek and Macedonian regions. His military achievements and enduring, unprecedented success in battle make him the measure with which many modern military leaders compare themselves. His was a superlative spread and influence across the then world.

Enlargement of Coast is an evidence of believers’ victory. To enlarge is to make greater in quantity or dimensions; to extend in limits, breadth, or side; to expand in bulk. This is one evidence of victory; you cannot be victorious and be restricted, with victory comes enlargement of coast. Victory increases the capacity of the conqueror; expanding his territory and affords him free or greater scope of influence. In other words, blessings and increase are products of victory.

Apostle Paul in his pastoral letter to the Ephesians says: “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” (Ephes. 1:3). This all- encompassing statement indicates that every blessing we could possibly need has been given in Christ. Christ came from heaven to earth from the Father to bring us every blessing we need. This is our enlargement of coast as believers.

As result of the enemies’ activities so many believers become dominated, discouraged, and incapacitated. Sometimes they are so ashamed to manifest perhaps due to fear imposed by the enemies. Sometimes they are so confused that they no longer even know that they have been called to dominate and increase on earth. Enlargement of coast is the supernatural advancement of the believer’s life, ministry, time, and circumstances, to bring God’s plans to pass at a much faster rate than is humanly possible without any hinderance.

In and through Jesus Christ, our barrenness has been transformed into fruitfulness, our poverty to plenty, and emptiness to Divinely accelerated overflow. Such is the power of His grace and forgiveness. No person, and no action by anyone else can prevent God’s purpose from being accomplished in our lives once you are in Christ Jesus. Indeed, we are blessed in superlative-abundance by God the Father with daily blessings and many manifestations of His love towards us. We are blessed to receive our great salvation, our position in Christ, the indwelling Spirit, and spiritual gifts and graces. We are blessed to know of His unconditional grace through God the Son, our heavenly Mediator, and great High Priest.

In Acts 9 there is one verse which is very, very full, “the assemblies...had peace, being edified and walking in the fear of the Lord and were increased through the comfort of the Holy Spirit” (v.31). They increased; they did not decrease. We read on three occasions in the Acts of the Apostles that the word of God increased (Acts 6:7, 12:24, 19:20). Where there are companies of believers in which the word of God is followed and obeyed there will be increase. Where the word of God has its way individually and collectively then there is bound to follow increase.

Therefore, every believer should desire to expand in the knowledge of God’s will, to know more of it, to be blessed and to enjoy ‘every blessing’ that we have in Christ Jesus. We cannot wield the desired influence for God if we are cowed by the enemies. We must advance in the victory purchased for us by Christ, tapping into “every blessing” He offers. It is true we live in a crucial time in the life of our economy however, we must be built up and renew our minds to the word of God. To fulfil the plan that God has for us we must prosper. In the same way that we are to be healed and whole; we are to prosper. Jabez found himself in an unpleasant situation, he prayed saying: “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” And God granted his request.” (1 Chr.4:9-10)

Let us also pray earnestly like Jabez, that we might be increased individually and that our companies might be increased spiritually, and of course, only as we are increased individually will we be increased collectively. I am sure that is being done but let us stimulate it a little further with a little more earnest desire and prayer for increase spiritually, not to acquiesce in the weak conditions, not to acquiesce in the declension, but to desire earnestly that there might be increase according to God.

Enlargement of Coast is your portion in this second half of the year in Jesus’ name.

Have a Blessed Week!
