Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals Secretariat provided by the United Nations Environment Programme STOP DUCKING HARD FACTS AND TOUGH POLICY OPTIONS ON BIRD FLU, SAYS NEW SCIENTIFIC TASK FORCE International Scientists warned today against panic responses based on the assumption that wild birds are the only cause of avian flu, and called for • regulation of animal markets • global surveillance of avian influenza in wild birds • precautionary suspension or restriction of the global wild bird trade • improved standards in poultry farms, farming and marketing practices and enhanced quality control of animal vaccines • identification of the precise migratory routes of waterbirds and the highest risk location along different flyways. The Task Force, comprising representatives and observers from 9 different international organizations including 4 UN bodies, also seeks much better data and information on the cause of the spread of the disease. It warned that several globally endangered species of birds could be wiped out by the killer disease, including the Lesser White-fronted Goose, Red-breasted Goose, Barheaded Goose, Swan Goose, Oriental Stork and Siberian Crane. Bonn, October 24 – A new task force on avian influenza comprising scientists and conservationists, convened by the UNEP Convention on Migratory Species (CMS), called today for urgent action to combat the root causes of the outbreak. It warned against growing hysteria and a “one-eyed” approach in the media which grossly over-simplifies the causes of the flu outbreak, and the methods needed to counter-act it in the interests of human and animal health. They emphasized the uncertainty of knowledge on key issues including how the virus is transmitted between domestic and wild birds. -

TOUR SUMMARY Madagascar has long been a core destination for Tropical Birding, and with last year’s opening of a satellite office in the country, we have further solidified our expertise in the “Eighth Continent.” This was another highly successful set-departure tour to this special island. It included both the Northwestern Endemics Pre-Trip at the start and the Helmet Vanga extension to the Masoala Peninsula at the end. Although Madagascar poses some logistical challenges, especially in the form of the national airline Air Madagascar, we had no problems on this tour, not even a single delayed flight! The birding was great, with 196 species recorded, including almost all of the island’s endemic birds. As usual, the highlight was seeing all five of the incredible ground-rollers, from the roadrunner-like Long-tailed of the spiny forest to the wonderful rainforest-dwelling Scaly. There was a strong cast of vangas, including Helmet, Bernier’s, and Sickle-billed. In fact, we saw every member of the family save the mysterious Red-tailed Newtonia which is only regularly seen in the far south. As normal, the couas were also a favorite. From the shy and beautiful Red-breasted of Madagascar Set Departure Tour Nov. 3-28, 2013 the eastern rainforest to the huge Giant Coua of the dry western forest, we were looking for and at couas virtually every day! The bizarre mesites form a Malagasy endemic family, and we had superb extended views of all three members of the family. -

Developing a research network on Glossy ibis, a neglected cosmopolitan species Álvaro Arenas Patiño © 2014 The Project in a nutshell The Glossy ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) is the only cosmopolitan species of the Threskiornithidae family (ibis and spoonbills) and among the most widely distributed bird species in the world ([1] see map at the bottom of the document). Nonetheless, no knowledge exists on the intraspecific phylogeny and very little is known about the (meta)populations dynamics. We aim to fill this gap by setting up a research network and by implementing modern analytical tools (e.g. molecular and statistical) we nowadays dispose of. Some puzzling aspects of Glossy ibis abundance and distribution Little is known about the movement ecology of this species especially when focusing on a large spatial scale. In most ornithology books the Glossy ibis is described as migratory with nomadic elements [2] with populations at tropics being more sedentary than others. However, references are rarely provided and, to the best of our knowledge, only a few data have been ever collected on the Glossy ibis dispersal behavior. According to historical records, breeding was very rare in W Europe while common in North Africa and S Spain before the 20th century when it became almost absent in all these regions [3–5]. In 1996 seven pairs settled at Doñana, a wetland area in SW Spain, from where the species begun an astonishing population increase reaching about 8,000 pairs in current times [6,7]. Since then, the Glossy ibis has started to colonize other areas in W Europe and the Mediterranean Basin from where it had been absent for decades or even had never been recorded as a breeder species. -

December 2020 / Printed: June 2021 Abstract.The Maguari Stork (Ciconia maguari) occurs extensively in South America where it inhabits mainly wetlands. Despite being common in some regions, information on several aspects of its ecology is lacking. The objective of this study was to investigate the diet of Maguari Storks in the Pampa ecoregion of southern Brazil using citizen science. A compilation of records of foraging birds was done in two on-line databases - WikiAves and e-Bird Brasil. A total of 36 records, obtained by citizens between 2008 and 2020, reported storks holding preys with their bills. The most frequent food item was the muçum fish (Synbranchus marmoratus), representing 39% of the preys. Squamate reptiles and anuran amphibians comprised 33% and 19% of the food items, respectively. Most preys had a serpentiform body shape, being represented mainly by muçum and snakes. This study suggests that our knowledge regarding the natural history of Brazilian birds can increase through citizen science.
