Speech of the General Postulator of the Cistercian Reverend Father And Speech of the General Postulator of the Cistercian Reverend father and mother capitularies I will begin my speech with the words of the great theologian Hans Urs von Balthassar that, in a text about Teresa from Lisieux and Elizabeth the Trinity, writes: “The same God puts the saints as milestones, as hallmarks, as a valid explanatory scheme of his own gospel for today and probably also for the future centuries. Some saints “fall onto church as heavenly lightnings, because they have to make people know about God’s unique and unrepeatable willingness.”Christian people immediately feel that these are the great gifts that God donates them, not only as “patrons” to evoke when specific necessities occur, but as lights set by God in the middle of the Church, to warm it and to illuminate it. For the folk they represent especially a new form of imitation of Christ suggested by the Holy Spirit”. It is spontaneous toask ourselves if we really are convinced that saints are Great gifts of God, or do we think they are a church’s invention to extract money from the faithfuls with the processes of canonization or to pander the wishes of ignorant people? Sorry for this question but I have noticed that there is a lot of prejudice on this topic. In these four years that I have carried out the task of General Postulator, I have had the impression, I hope wrong, that the “Amazement and admiration for the Saints,splendor of the Church and of the glory of humanity” is not clearly understood. Concretely, at my nomination approved by the Congregation of the Causes of the Saints the 25th of November 2011, I have found at the Congregation le following causes: 1. Blessed Vincenzo Kadlubek 2. Venerable Veronica Laparelli 3. Venerable FeliceKebreAmlach 4. Servant of God Jean Leonard Besides father Felice the other causes were dormant, which means that it had been a while that no one was taking care of them. It was my care to test the waters of these causes. Something has been done by the monasteries mainly interested, but it is still too little. In the meantime in the diocese the following causes have been introduced: 1. Servant of God Mother Mary Evangelista 2. Servants of God Father SimeoneCardon and other five martyrs 3. Servant of GodP.Henri Denis Benoit (in place) To this cause you must add that of father PlacidoGrebenec and other five religious of the Abbey of Stinca, that for the moment remain in the group of the two hundred Slovenian performing martyrs, at the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints, at the Slovenian Bishops’ Conference, when and if they decide, the monastery of Stinca can remove them and let their cause go on its own: this was confirmed to me by the archbishop of Lubiana. The same thing concerns the Irish fathers GelasisusO’Cullenan and father Luke Bergin who belong to the second group of the Martyrs of Ireland, whose cause, with other forty martyrs, sees the diocese of Dublin as the main protagonist. In this case I haven’t succeeded in doing much. The cause of Mother Evangelista, once ended the diocesan process,is now to the scrutiny ofthe Congregation for the Causes of the Saints. The cause of the Martyrs of Casamari is almost finished. According to me, other causescould have been started (I am thinking about Hungary: the archibishopWendelin and sister Monica). A separate Charpter is the cause of the doctorate of saint Gertrude of Helfta; I am the vice postulator and treasurer of the cause that, step after step, in collaboration with theCistercian Order of the Strict Observance and the Benedictine Congregation of Solesmes, goes ahead even if the answer from the German episcopate hasn’t really been positive and probably vitiated by bias.The German Episcopal Conference, has been unnecessarily quirky for what concerns theGertrude’s Sanctity of life, repeating very often the word authenticity but forgetting that an established tradition exists as well. On the other hand there is the support of almost all the Episcopal Conferences of South America and of other ecclesiastical Institutions. Mother Hildegard will deal better with the matter. Certainly it doesn’t mean to give saint Gertrude a university degree, but to encourage the faithful (including the monks) to walk, of course with their feet on the ground, but also with their look heart turned to God: this is saint Helfta’s teaching that for years has been imparted to generations of faithful, up to the point that the title of Great was given to her, the only woman in the history of the church of receiving it. Besides the work for the causes, lots of people have written to receive devotional objects and information about our monks and nuns; consequently, booklets and holy pictures have been printed out and a dvd has been produced, in order to help the faithful in their journey of faith. About that, my knowledge of languages is weak but with some help I have done something in the Spanish language, besides the Italian one. Someone will smile after having heard about the devotional objects; as an answer to that smile I will make mine the words of Péguy to a person who accused him that his book on Giovanna d’Arci was the result of naivety because it didn’t have solid scriptural and historicalfoundation;Péguy answered: “The bottom of thought (of his detractor), let’s say it clearly, is that those who believe (in holiness) are imbeciles….Who believes, it isn’t true that he is always a bit silly, between us, a bit stupid, a bit naïve… He (the person who smiled about his Giovanna d’Arci) is one of the highest examples of men who do not believe but claim limit to other people’s faith”.I invite you not to limit other people’s faith, in this field, as if we were in an Olympus of privileged people. The message of a saint can’t agebecause a saint lives his Gospel message in the concrete of his time; the ways of living this message can age, but never the love that has moved people and it is in this love that we must find the stimulus to live our monastic devotion. Never forget that the saints are the true charisma of a religious Family. Saints tell us, although they have lived centuries ago, about the vitality of our Order; among the latest saints and blessed proclaimed by pope Francesco, more than about ten lived in the XVII century with mother Evangelista and nun Veronica Laparelli besides more than fifteen in 1800and about twenty in the XX century. In these days the heroic virtues of nun Benedetta Frey who died in 1913 have been celebrated, Cistercian nun of the monastery in Viterbo; how not to see in her an example and a stimulus of endurance or total reliance on God in infirmity? Immobilized on her bed for 25 years, she has never failed to the consecration of the Cistercian nun. How not to look at the fidelity and at the charisma of father SimeoneCardon (one of the martyrs of Casamari) who, after being wounded to death, said to the French general who had come to help him: “When I became a monk I refused man’s help. Submissive only to God, I will do nothing neither to abbreviate my life nor to prolong it…. I, alive or dead, want to stay in this monastery. If the Lord tells me to wait, I will wait for that monastery that will be built, but even if He will call me in advance I will always be the son of Saint Benedict’s Rules, son of Saint Bernard and Cistercian; I hope to die this way”. How not to be surprised bythe monastic path done by mother Evangelista, who despite adversity, since her entrance at the CistercianRecolette as Lay-sister while she wanted to be chorister, at the foundation of Cassarrubios del Monte monastery, she remained faithful to her monastic vocation? In one of her visions the mother sees saint Ignazio from Loyola and saint Bernardand the face of this latest is brighter;mother Evangelista is amazed and asks Gesus for an explanation, and he answers: “You ask your Father!”. In Saint Bernard she saw the paternity of the Saint who most symbolizes the Cistercian charisma which never came less. It is not possible to pass over in silence the monastic and mystic experience of the VenerableVeronica Laparelli of who is said that: “From Father Patriarch Saint Benedict once she was given the rules, while from Father Saint Benedictshe was givena precise instruction to succeed in perfection coveted”. Going back to some hundred years ago, sister Monika’s Diary can stimulate us in living fully our vocation; in the preface to the Diary the Cardinal Hans Urs von Balthasar says: “Choose freely, without constraint, poverty and wait for the same choice made by the others. Heaven and earth interweave during the whole life, outright: the first towards the earth and the second towards the sky. The simple liturgy in the spirituality of saint Benedict, that everything pervades-and that community puts into practice in modest chambers- is the eloquent sign of this unity”. After having pronounced the vows, on the first of January 1959 she writes in her Diary: “I would really like to teach the young (the girls of the community) to love the Rule. This in order to make it really the bread of their soul. So that it vibrates in them in the joy of the feast, as well as in the futile difficulties of ordinary lives.

Mike McAward Question: If we decide to pray for someone through the intercession of one of our "holy ones," must it be prayer to an individual (e.g., to Fr. Chaminade, Faustino or Fr. Lazaro)? What about prayer to the Marianist Martyrs together? What about prayer of the Marianist Family to all the saints of the Marianist Family (meaning the 14 presently being considered)? A person may pray to whomever he or she wishes. Therefore, invoking the “holy ones” as a group or as individuals is up to the person. In our communities we invoke the “Marianist Martyrs” during the Eucharistic Prayer as a group but Fr. Chaminade individually. Question: If someone does take this route, what is the process he or she must go through for it to be called a miracle? You wonder what happens if a so-called “miracle” results from such group prayer. This is a little more complicated. For an alleged miracle to be designated as coming about through the intercession of a person, it must be clearly linked to prayer to that person. This is nearly impossible to ascertain when the object of the prayer was a general group. Obviously, the main purpose of the request for a favor in prayer is the favor itself (a cure, assistance of some kind, etc.), and not as a way to get “credit” for a particular “saint-in-waiting.” Nevertheless, to advance a particular person’s cause, there must be a clear link of prayer to that individual, and not simply his or her presence in a general group.

    The 91-Year Journey to the Beatification Blessed Father William Joseph Chaminade by Tom Redmond, SM On Thursday, September 3, 2020, the Marianist Family marked the twentieth anniversary of the beatification of Father William Joseph Chaminade. The miraculous healing of Elena Graciela Otero, a lay Marianist in Buenos Aires, Argentina, through the intercession of Father Chaminade, affirmed the many efforts in the long 91-year journey of his cause. This article describes the circumstances of the miraculous healing and then looks at two separate historical events on the road to the beatification of Father Chaminade. Miraculous Healing of Elena Graciela Otero In January 1991 Elena Otero began to suffer complications from a malignant tumor (thyroid cancer) on the right side of her neck that led to difficulty in her breathing. Her lay community, Myriam Peregrina, began praying to God for a cure through the intercession of Father Chaminade. Following an examination in February, doctors decided on surgery. Without Elena receiving any medical treatment or intervention, the doctors discovered during a follow-up medical exam in March that Elena’s tumor was gone. After a diocesan investigation into Elena’s healing, her case was submitted to Rome in May 1996. In October, the investigation was accepted as valid by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints; two medical consultations then evaluated her case and considered the healing as “scientifically unexplainable.” The Congregation voted unanimously in favor of the miraculous healing, and on December 20, 1999, the decree for the beatification of Father Chaminade was announced. The beatification ceremony was held in Rome in September 2000 with three events: • Saturday, September 2: Evening prayer was celebrated at Collegio Santa Maria, a Marianist school near the General Administration of the Society of Mary.

They want to transfer the remains of Cardinal John Henry Newman from a grave in a small cemetery in the suburbs of Birmingham, England, to a marble sarcophagus in a church in the city where they can be venerated by pilgrims. A July 14 statement said that the Archdiocese of Birmingham was now in direct contact with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Sir Suma Chakrabarti, to obtain the necessary permission to exhume Cardinal Newman’s body. “One of the centuries-old procedures surrounding the creating of new saints by the Catholic Church concerns their earthly remains,” said Father Paul Chavasse, provost of the Birmingham Oratory and postulator of Cardinal Newman’s cause. “These have to be identified, preserved and, if necessary, placed in a new setting that befits the individual’s new status in the church,” he said in the statement issued by the Archdiocese of Birmingham. He said the Vatican had advised the archdiocese that this would be the normal course of action. “We hope that Cardinal Newman’s new resting place in the Oratory church in Birmingham will enable more people to come and pay their respects to him, and perhaps light a candle there,” he said. Father Chavasse added that he felt certain that many people would “surely wish to honor this great and holy man.” He said the government decision on the exhumation was expected in the “near future.” Cardinal Newman’s cause took a step forward in April when Vatican medical consultants ruled that an inexplicable healing in August 2001 was a result of his intercession.

    How the Church Recognizes Saints By Jeannine Marino The process of declaring one a saint in the Catholic Church is called canonization. The canonization process is a canonical (Church law) procedure by which the Church through the Pope solemnly declares a Catholic to be united with God in heaven, an intercessory to God on behalf of the living, and worthy of public and universal veneration. A cause of canonization examines a person’s life and death to determine if they were either martyred or lived a virtuous life. Every cause of canonization has two phases: the diocesan and Roman phase. The diocese responsible for opening a cause is the diocese in which the person died/was martyred. The diocese, religious order, association or lay person(s) requesting (petitioning) for the cause asks the diocesan bishop, through a person known as the postulator to open an investigation into the martyrdom or life of the person. The diocesan bishop investigates how the person lived a heroic virtuous life, exemplifying the virtues of faith, hope and love through the calling of witnesses and the theological examination of the candidates’ writings. If the cause is based on martyrdom, the diocesan bishop investigates the circumstances surrounding the alleged martyrdom, which is also done through the calling of witnesses to the martyrdom and the examination of the candidates’ life. Once the diocesan investigation is complete, the documentation (evidence) that has been collected is sent to the Vatican’s Congregation for the Causes of Saints and the Roman phase begins. The first step in the Roman phase is the examination of the diocesan documentation.

    The Canonisation of St. Oliver Plunkett Confirmed Venerable on the 9th December 1886, the campaign for Archbishop Oliver Plunkett’s beatification could then begin. Declared Martyr, by the Church on St. Patrick’s Day 1918, he became Blessed Oliver at a beatification ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome on Pentecost Sunday 23rd May 1920, during the pontificate of Pope Benedict XV. Following the 1932 Eucharistic Congress in Dublin, there was renewed interest in Blessed Oliver and a league of prayer was initiated to pray for his canonisation. In 1958, an Italian woman, Mrs. Giovanna Martiriggiano who was gravely ill in hospital in Naples, was unexpectedly cured of her illness. A sister of the Irish Medical Missionaries of Mary, Sr. Cabrini Quigley from Donegal who was working in the hospital, prayed with the lady’s husband Nicola, regularly throughout the night to Blessed Oliver, for a cure of the patient who was expected to die overnight. The lady who was expecting a child and was full term, was found unconscious at home. After many hours in this state, she was brought to hospital where it was found that she had lost the large baby girl and that some of the mothers internal organs were severely damaged and almost nonexistent as a result. The surgeon attending her, knowing that death was imminent, only loosely stitched her up in theatre and he arranged that she should be placed in a side ward not wishing her to die in ‘his’ theatre. Overnight, surprise was expressed on several occasions that she was still alive and hospital staff were astonished the following day when the patient revived.

    Backgrounder prepared by Office of Media Relations U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops 3211 Fourth Street NE ∙ Washington, DC 20017 202-541-3200 ∙ http://www.usccb.org/mr/ Making Saints Introduction All Christians aspire to become saints, that is, persons in heaven (officially canonized or not), who lived lives of great charity and heroic virtues and who are worthy of imitation. In official Church procedures there are three steps to sainthood: a candidate becomes “Venerable,” then “Blessed” and then “Saint.” Venerable is the title given to a deceased person recognized formally by the pope as having lived heroic virtues. To be beatified and recognized as a Blessed, one miracle acquired through the candidate‟s intercession is required in addition to recognition of heroic virtue or martyrdom. Canonization requires a second miracle after beatification, though a pope may waive these requirements. (A miracle is not required prior to a martyr‟s beatification, but one is required before canonization.) Key Terms Beatification -- the second stage in the process of proclaiming a person a saint; occurs after a diocese and the Congregation for the Causes of Saints has conducted a rigorous investigation into the person‟s life and writings to determine whether he or she demonstrates a heroic level of virtue or suffered martyrdom. A miracle attributed to the person‟s intercession must be proved. Blessed -- titled bestowed on a person who has been beatified and accorded limited veneration. Canonization – the formal process by which the Church declares a person to be a saint and worthy of veneration universally. Congregation for the Causes of Saints – a department of the Roman Curia, established originally as the Congregation of Rites by Pope Sixtus V in 1588.
