Our Patron Saint St Oliver Plunkett (1625 - 1681) Oliver Plunkett was born in Ireland in 1625. At that time, Catholics were persecuted for their faith and many were evicted from their homes and forbidden from attending mass. Priests, themselves, were hunted down and particularly punished if they were caught. Many priests fled to Rome to study for the priesthood. Oliver went to Rome and was ordained in 1654 as a priest and then later, in 1669, as the Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of Ireland. On his return to Ireland, Archbishop Plunkett established himself as a man of peace and set about visiting his people, establishing schools, ordaining priests and confirming thousands of lay people. During this time, he made many enemies, one of whom later gave evidence at his trial. In 1673, with a renewal of religious persecution, bishops were banned once again and Archbishop Plunkett went into hiding and suffered a great deal. His letters revealed a determination not to abandon his people but to remain a faithful shepherd. The oppression eventually eased and for a short time, he was able to move amongst his people more freely, once again. In 1679, Archbishop Plunkett was arrested and falsely charged with treason. This man of peace was accused of plotting to bring 20 000 French soldiers to Ireland. He was taken to London to stand trial and because he was not given time to arrange his defence. Archbishop Plunkett was found guilty and sentenced to death. The presiding judge said that at the basis of his treason charge was the setting up of a false religion, which was a crime against God. -

DERR THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERISTY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH SUPERVISOR OF RESEARCH: DR. THOMAS O’CONNOR NOVEMBER 2013 Abstract This study explores, reconstructs and evaluates the social, political, educational and economic worlds of the Irish Catholic episcopal corps appointed between 1657 and 1829 by creating a prosopographical profile of this episcopal cohort. The central aim of this study is to reconstruct the profile of this episcopate to serve as a context to evaluate the ‘achievements’ of the four episcopal generations that emerged: 1657-1684; 1685- 1766; 1767-1800 and 1801-1829. The first generation of Irish bishops were largely influenced by the complex political and religious situation of Ireland following the Cromwellian wars and Interregnum. This episcopal cohort sought greater engagement with the restored Stuart Court while at the same time solidified their links with continental agencies. With the accession of James II (1685), a new generation of bishops emerged characterised by their loyalty to the Stuart Court and, following his exile and the enactment of new penal legislation, their ability to endure political and economic marginalisation. Through the creation of a prosopographical database, this study has nuanced and reconstructed the historical profile of the Jacobite episcopal corps and has shown that the Irish episcopate under the penal regime was not only relatively well-organised but was well-engaged in reforming the Irish church, albeit with limited resources. By the mid-eighteenth century, the post-Jacobite generation (1767-1800) emerged and were characterised by their re-organisation of the Irish Church, most notably the establishment of a domestic seminary system and the setting up and manning of a national parochial system. -

Mike McAward Question: If we decide to pray for someone through the intercession of one of our "holy ones," must it be prayer to an individual (e.g., to Fr. Chaminade, Faustino or Fr. Lazaro)? What about prayer to the Marianist Martyrs together? What about prayer of the Marianist Family to all the saints of the Marianist Family (meaning the 14 presently being considered)? A person may pray to whomever he or she wishes. Therefore, invoking the “holy ones” as a group or as individuals is up to the person. In our communities we invoke the “Marianist Martyrs” during the Eucharistic Prayer as a group but Fr. Chaminade individually. Question: If someone does take this route, what is the process he or she must go through for it to be called a miracle? You wonder what happens if a so-called “miracle” results from such group prayer. This is a little more complicated. For an alleged miracle to be designated as coming about through the intercession of a person, it must be clearly linked to prayer to that person. This is nearly impossible to ascertain when the object of the prayer was a general group. Obviously, the main purpose of the request for a favor in prayer is the favor itself (a cure, assistance of some kind, etc.), and not as a way to get “credit” for a particular “saint-in-waiting.” Nevertheless, to advance a particular person’s cause, there must be a clear link of prayer to that individual, and not simply his or her presence in a general group. -

Where such remains survive, are correct, the skull would appear to have been venerated they are generally the product of specific and unusual as a relic. The skull and box have been analysed using a circumstances regarding their postmortem treatment or range of techniques including computerised tomography, depositional context. In this paper, we present analyses laser scanning, microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and and discussion of a human cranium with a degree of radiocarbon dating. These analyses demonstrated the skull preserved soft tissue, previously alleged to be of medieval in fact to be that of an Egyptian mummy dating from the or Early Modern date, curated by a small UK museum. -

Legacy of St. Oliver As a result of the Confederate wars of the 1640’s, the Cromwellian persecutions of the 1650’s and the Church dissensions of the 1660’s, the Irish Church after more than a generation of strife, was in grave danger of collapse. But into the 1670’s and not a moment too soon, by the grace of God, steps Archbishop Oliver, who wrote of these dissensions: “altar has been erected against altar.” Because of the deep divisions between Gael and Pale, the potential fault line in the Irish Church was much more pronounced in the northern province than in any other province. Providentially, it was here that Archbishop Oliver firmly took the tiller as Primate of Ireland, writing: “I imitate the Patriarch who without appearing on the stage, directs the whole show.” His strong calming presence, ensured that the Irish Church would not become ‘a house divided against itself’. During that short window of opportunity between persecutions, he brought peace and order to the Church, thereby giving it hope. Through his many reforms, he left it on a more secure footing and better able to withstand the next prolonged assault of the penal laws, which was soon about to break. A former teaching professor, his efforts ensured that priests were educated, better organised and much more capable in their duties. The many ordination ceremonies he performed, his re-training of priests and his insistence on the high standards of those priests whether secular or religious, all of this helped in a significant way, in Oliver’s plan to rebuild the Church in Ireland and to leave it in good hands for future generations. -

The 91-Year Journey to the Beatification Blessed Father William Joseph Chaminade by Tom Redmond, SM On Thursday, September 3, 2020, the Marianist Family marked the twentieth anniversary of the beatification of Father William Joseph Chaminade. The miraculous healing of Elena Graciela Otero, a lay Marianist in Buenos Aires, Argentina, through the intercession of Father Chaminade, affirmed the many efforts in the long 91-year journey of his cause. This article describes the circumstances of the miraculous healing and then looks at two separate historical events on the road to the beatification of Father Chaminade. Miraculous Healing of Elena Graciela Otero In January 1991 Elena Otero began to suffer complications from a malignant tumor (thyroid cancer) on the right side of her neck that led to difficulty in her breathing. Her lay community, Myriam Peregrina, began praying to God for a cure through the intercession of Father Chaminade. Following an examination in February, doctors decided on surgery. Without Elena receiving any medical treatment or intervention, the doctors discovered during a follow-up medical exam in March that Elena’s tumor was gone. After a diocesan investigation into Elena’s healing, her case was submitted to Rome in May 1996. In October, the investigation was accepted as valid by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints; two medical consultations then evaluated her case and considered the healing as “scientifically unexplainable.” The Congregation voted unanimously in favor of the miraculous healing, and on December 20, 1999, the decree for the beatification of Father Chaminade was announced. The beatification ceremony was held in Rome in September 2000 with three events: • Saturday, September 2: Evening prayer was celebrated at Collegio Santa Maria, a Marianist school near the General Administration of the Society of Mary. -

Catholic officials seek permission to exhume Cardinal Newman’s body LONDON – Catholic officials have applied for permission to exhume the body of a 19th-century cardinal whose cause for sainthood is expected to soon progress to beatification. They want to transfer the remains of Cardinal John Henry Newman from a grave in a small cemetery in the suburbs of Birmingham, England, to a marble sarcophagus in a church in the city where they can be venerated by pilgrims. A July 14 statement said that the Archdiocese of Birmingham was now in direct contact with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Sir Suma Chakrabarti, to obtain the necessary permission to exhume Cardinal Newman’s body. “One of the centuries-old procedures surrounding the creating of new saints by the Catholic Church concerns their earthly remains,” said Father Paul Chavasse, provost of the Birmingham Oratory and postulator of Cardinal Newman’s cause. “These have to be identified, preserved and, if necessary, placed in a new setting that befits the individual’s new status in the church,” he said in the statement issued by the Archdiocese of Birmingham. He said the Vatican had advised the archdiocese that this would be the normal course of action. “We hope that Cardinal Newman’s new resting place in the Oratory church in Birmingham will enable more people to come and pay their respects to him, and perhaps light a candle there,” he said. Father Chavasse added that he felt certain that many people would “surely wish to honor this great and holy man.” He said the government decision on the exhumation was expected in the “near future.” Cardinal Newman’s cause took a step forward in April when Vatican medical consultants ruled that an inexplicable healing in August 2001 was a result of his intercession.
