Diagnosis Head with male eyes usually holoptic (with few exceptions, e.g., Phycus Walker), invariably dichoptic in females; eye usu- Small- to large-sized flies (body length: 3–15 mm), with slen- ally bare (with few exceptions, e.g., Braunsophila Kröber); an- der to moderately thick body, often tapering gradually towards tenna with scape often elongate, sometimes enlarged; pedicel posterior end (Figs 1–37); colouration mainly black, through often as long as wide; flagellum with 2–3 flagellomeres and grey and brown to earth tones, sometimes red and orange, usually a short apical arista (e.g., Figs 24, 37, 38). -

Ex-Hacienda de San José de La Huerta 58190 Morelia, Michoacán. 1E-mail: [email protected] RESUMEN Las larvas gregarias de Lophoceramica pyrrha (Druce) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) se alimentan casi exclusivamente de las hojas de Wigandia urens (Ruiz et Pavón) Kunth (Hydrophyllaceae) aunque en ocasiones es posible encontrarlas en Buddleia cordata Kunth (Loganiaceae) y Dahlia coccinea Cav. (Asteraceae) dentro la Reserva Ecológica del Pedregal de San Ángel en la ciudad de México. Estudios previos de laboratorio demuestran que las larvas de L. pyrrha tuvieron un mejor desarrollo con hojas de B. cordata que con hojas de W. urens, debido a la alta concentración de nitrógeno y agua de las primeras. Sin embargo, se desconoce por qué en condiciones naturales las hembras de L. pyrrha prefieren un hospedero de menor calidad nutricional como lo es W. urens. En el presente estudio se investigaron (1) los patrones de distribución de las oviposturas de L. pyrrha en plantas y hojas de W. urens, (2) la mortalidad de la larvas de L. -
