The local park is in line for a multi-million pound revamp and Holly Lodge students will have a say as to what the changes will involve. Pupils have already completed general questionnaires on the subject for the company undertaking consultation on the improvements. More opportunities will be arising next year for students to have an impact on the future of West Smethwick Park, we’ll keep you updated on these exciting developments!

In the meantime, if you would like to let Council know how you use the Park and how you feel it could be improved then please complete a confidential survey before 31st July. Having visited Holy Trinity Church where this operates and meeting with their staff, they advertised the work of the Food Bank and collected required items such as toiletries and breakfast cereals, particularly from charitable families of Year 7 students. The Food Bank was very grateful for the donations and looks to continue working with Holly Lodge next year.

During the Summer Term our female students have been involved in the Sandwell Rounders League. We have had a large uptake of Year 7 students which is really pleasing to see, and they have regularly attended training and matches. The hard work has paid off for our younger students who won their first match against Ormiston Sandwell whilst playing in the Year 8 League. As with our Year 7 students we have a number of Year 8 students who have stepped up and played in the older age category, they have put in a 100% effort in all matches with the Year 9/10 students and shown improvement each week, continuing their search for a first league win. In June the Year 9 girls were invited to participate in the Black Country Summer Games, they gave it their all during the 5 fixtures, however, they were not able to progress to the next round. The tournament and leagues have been enjoyed by all students and we look forward to the students continuing their passion for Rounders in the next academic year. The PE Department have successfully completed the “Living for Sport” Project sponsored by Sky Sports. This Miss Corcoran has included Athlete Mentors coming into school and inspiring our young people through the power of sport and the positive role that it can play. We will be taking part in the project again in the new academic year.

Sky Sports “Sky Living Academy Day” Gifted & Talented

As part of our continued involvement in the Sky Sports programme which sends ambassadors into schools to deliver on their 6 keys to success, we had ex South African, Worcester and Gloucester Rugby Union player Thinus Delport in to work with our Gifted & Talented pupils in years 7 & 8. He delivered a whole day’s workshop that incorporated both classroom discussion and practical elements to engage pupils on how they can use sport to aid their development in a range of different elements. We hope to have a follow up loyalty visit where he will work with a different group of pupils. This was a wonderful opportunity and experience for both pupils and staff. Go on an adventure this summer ... Pick up a book! This year there is a fantastic initiative at local libraries to encourage young people to read, so rather than staring at a screen or watching the rain through the window why not take part in the Big Friendly Read. On 27th May we took part in an enterprise challenge held by the Royal Television Society. Miss Bennett bought us all into the hall and introduced us to Jayne Green, a member of the RTS, who was the host for the day. She introduced the challenge, which consisted of two parts; planning and presenting an idea for a new television programme. There were 50 students from year 8 all competing against each other. There were some fantastic ideas, but not as good as ours…

Our idea that we presented to the judge, LLewela Bailey (BBC Radio Presenter), for a television series was ‘Fill the Bucket’. The next stage of the competition was the finals day, which was hosted at Wolverhampton University. When we first arrived we were given a tour around the Film and media department, Aliya Fiyaz, Safina Lalh, Rommel Mfinda, Manraj Jagpal, which was incredible. They had their own television studio, Anisur Rahman, Arjun Singh, Aditiya Dadwal, Arshdeep newsroom and graphics suite. Students from Years 7 and 8 have been learning all about the life cycles of chickens and butterflies with the help of Miss Hill and Mr Bowley in the Science Department. The Chicken and Butterfly Club was run during the month of June.

The students incubated eggs which hatched out between Monday and Thursday. They then helped to look after the chickens feeding and handling them. This took place for 2 weeks. Eventually the chickens grew strong enough to go and live at a free-range farm.

The students also saw butterflies through their lifecycle from caterpillar to chrysalis. The Painted Lady butterflies were eventually released after 3 weeks incubation.
