It also includes other important aspects or peculiarities. Vicente Garzó is Professor of Theoretical Physics in the Department of Physics at the University of Extremadura (UEx). He graduated in Physics from the University of Valencia (Spain) in 1982 where he also obtained a PhD in Physics in 1986. Then, he was appointed as a Teaching Assistant of the University of Sevilla (Spain) in February 1988. Two years later, he got a permanent position at the UEx as an Associate Professor. Then, in November 2000 he was promoted to Full Professor of the UEx where he has remained ever since. Professor Garzó has carried out long stays (for periods of 10 months) in the Instituto de Investigación en Materiales (UNAM, México) and the University of Florida (USA) apart from short stays (2-4 weeks) in those universities and others like the Université Paris-Sud (France), the University of Colorado (USA), Universidad of Chile (Santiago, Chile), and Kyoto University (Kyoto, Japan). His research has been essentially focused on the application of kinetic theory to both classical gases in far from equilibrium states and granular media. During the first years of his career, his research has been mainly addressed on the derivation of exact nonlinear transport properties using the Boltzmann kinetic equation and related kinetic models. These efforts were partially collected in a monograph co-authored with A. Santos (Kinetic Theory of Gases in Shear Flows: Nonlinear Transport) and published by Springer in 2003. In the last fifteen years, he has extended his background in kinetic theory by applying this tool to the study of the so-called granular rapid flows (granular matter under rapid flow conditions), collaborating in some of the most important advances in the field. As for his research on granular media, one can highlight the papers published in PRE 59, 5895 (1999) and PRE 60, 5706 (1999), in collaboration with J. W. Dufty, which have been cited more than 322 and 158 times, respectively. The efforts made in granular fluids have recently been collected in the monograph (Granular Gaseous Flows) published by Springer in 2019. He has authored 194 publications, including two books, 27 book chapters, and 165 journal articles (112 of them being Q1). Moreover, Prof. Garzó has delivered 23 lectures in different meetings as an invited speaker [one of them as Keynote Speaker in the IMA conference on dense granular flows (Cambridge, 2013) and three of them as Keynote Lectures in the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics (Kyoto University, Kyoto, 2018)], he has acted as a referee for 31 different journals (in several of them on a regular basis), he is member of the editorial board of the international journals Granular Matter (Springer) and Entropy (MDPI) and he has been the coordinator of ANECA (Spanish National Agency) for FPU grants of the 2012 and 2013 calls in the field “Physics and Space Sciences”. Moreover, Prof. Garzó’s work and trajectory has been recognized with a number of awards and honors: Quality Research Prize (shared with A. Santos) for the book Kinetic Theory of Gases in Shear Flows. Actually, they preceded the revival of the interest of the American physicists towards the foundations of quantum mechanics around mid-1970s, recently reconstructed by David Kaiser in a book of 2011. An element common to both cases is the role played by the young generation, even though the respective motivations were quite different. In the US they reacted to research cuts after the war in Vietnam, and were inspired by the New Age mood. In Italy the dissatisfaction of the young generations was rooted in the student protests of 1968 and the subsequent labour and social fights, which challenged the role of scientists. The young generations of physicists searched for new scientific approaches and challenged their own scientific knowledge and role. The criticism to the foundations of quantum mechanics and the perspectives of submitting them to experimental tests were perceived as an innovative research field and this attitude was directly linked to the search for an innovative and radical approach in the history of science.

At the end of the sixties, dual models dominated the scene as the theory of strong interactions. However, the years 1971-1973 brought decisive discoveries [1]. • 1971, ’t Hooft and Veltman showed that the Weinberg-Salam theory is renormalisable; • 1972, Bouchiat, Iliopoulos and Meyer proved the cancellation of Adler anomalies in the electroweak theory with four quarks. In a letter from John, there must be charm, quarks have color and are fractionally charged; • 1973 the discovery of neutral currents by Gargamelle at CERN; • ... and in the same year came the discovery of asymptotic freedom of the Yang-Mills theory by Gross and Wilczeck and Politzer. Shortly after, the idea of color interaction of quarks was put forward by Fritzsch, Gell-Mann and Leutwyler. In three years, the paradigm of particle interactions shifted completely towards field theory, a shining example of what Thomas Kuhn in 1962 had called a scientific revolution. In 1974, the discovery of the J/Ψ opened another chapter: heavy fermions, initiated with charm and later continued with the heavy lepton, beauty and top.     Giorgio Parisi: Curriculum vitæ Giorgio Parisi was born in Rome August 4, 1948, he completed his studies at the university of Rome and he graduated in physics in 1970 under the direction of Nicola Cabibbo. He carried out his research at the National Laboratories of Frascati, first as fellow of the CNR (1971-1973) and later as a researcher of the INFN (1973-1981). During this period he made long stays abroad: Columbia University, New York (1973-1974), Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques, Bures-sur-Yvettes (1976-1977), Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris (1977-1978). He was nominated full professor at the University of Rome in February 1981; from 1981 to 1992 he was a professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Once, while struggling to de- velop a mathematical model for a com- plicated system, he found that turning basic concepts inside-out was the only way to crack the puzzle. Parisi explains that it was as if he needed to figure out the number of distinct ways that a handful objects could be placed in a row. The mathematics would not budge, until he decided to introduce the idea of a ‘‘half-object.’’ ‘‘Now, a half-object is something that does not make sense,’’ Parisi admits. ‘‘When physicists use mathematics, they use it in a looser way.’’ Parisi’s idea of the half-object brought him acclaim in the field of disordered systems, and nearly a quarter of a cen- tury later, mathematicians agreed that his innovation was correct. These recollations will be mainly devoted to his early part of his career, because at that time we had frequent scientific exchanges and we were working on similar field (often together). 1 Introduction Aurelio was born in 1945: he was three years older than me. We did not see each other too much while he was studying at the university. However we started to see each other very frequently after he left the university: we had a very good common friend, Massimo Testa. When I got a fellowship at the National Frascati Laboratories (January 1971), he had already a permanent position there. 1 + At the Frascati Laboratories there was the largest e e− colliding beam in the world: it was constructed under the scientific leadership of Bruno Touschek. Unfortunately, the project-energy was 1.5+1.5 Gev, not 1.6 Gev+1.6 Gev, so Frascati was unable to discover the ψ1. When arrived at Frascati I found a small, but wonderful, theory group: beyond Aurelio there where Gianni de Franceschi, Paolo di Vecchia, Antonino Drago, Etim Etim, Sergio Ferrara, and Mario Greco. We were working at a few meters one from the others and we were going to eat together at the excellent cantine of the laboratories.
