Biodiversity Journal , 2016, 7 (2): 223–228 Contribution to the flora of United Arab Emirates: Glinus lotoides L. (Molluginaceae) and Senna occidentalis L. (Fabaceae) two new records Tamer Mahmoud 1* , Sanjay Gairola 1, Hatem Shabana 1 & Ali El-Keblawy 2 1Sharjah Seed Bank and Herbarium, Sharjah Research Academy, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates 2Department of Applied Biology, Faculty of Science, University of Sharjah, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates *Corresponding author, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper reports Glinus lotoides L. (Molluginaceae) and Senna occidentalis L. (Fabaceae) as two new records to the flora of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In the UAE, G. lotoides grows in the seasonally inundated land when the water recedes and soils have high clay contents. This is the only representative species of the genus Glinus in the UAE. Hence, we added a new genus to the country’s flora. Senna occidentalis was recorded from Wadi Al-Ain with ca. 15 individuals in its population. This species is considered as a weed elsewhere, so, there should be further assessments in order to monitor naturalization potential in its new localities in the UAE. The general distribution of the newly recorded species, habitat pref- erences and taxonomy with a map of localities in the UAE are presented. The occurrence of both species in different places in the UAE calls for further investigation and more extensive field studies to explore the country’s genetic resources. KEY WORDS Floristic survey; Glinus lotoides; Senna occidentalis; new record; UAE. SHORT COMMUNICATION The Herpetological Bulletin 142, 2017: 42-43 An updated distribution of the Arabian cat snake Telescopus dhara in the United Arab Emirates DANIEL KANE1,*, GARETH TONEN2, STEVE GOODWIN3, BRANDON BALLARD4 & GLENN BOWLEY5 1, 3, 4Zoological Society of London, London Zoo, Regent’s Park, London, NW1 4RY, UK. 2Nad Al Sheba 1, Dubai, United Arab Emirates 5Jumeirah Village Circle, Dubai, United Arab Emirates *Corresponding author Email: [email protected] he Arabian cat snake Telescopus dhara is a rear-fanged venomous member of the colubridae family. Adult TArabian cat snakes are typically reported to be between 60 and 70 cm long, with the largest individual cited in literature measuring 113.2 cm total length (Egan, 2007). The known distribution of this species includes the mountain ranges of Arabia, from the Gulf of Aqaba in the north down through the western and central mountains of Saudi Arabia; the range continues through Yemen and throughout rocky and mountainous areas of Oman and the UAE (Gasperettii, 1988; Gardner et al., 2009; Soorae et al., 2010). Usual body colour of the Arabian cat snake varies from shades of brown to orange, often with darker transverse markings on the dorsal surface. The ventral surface is cream-coloured and otherwise not pigmented (Gardner, 2013). Figure 1. Egan (2007) suggested this specimen was probably transported in date palms from northern Oman.
