  • 16 the Argentinean Shipbuilding Industry
16 The Argentinean shipbuilding industry Workers’ struggles in a state shipyard Cintia Russo Introduction The aim of this chapter is to analyse the trajectory and survival of one of the oldest and largest ship repair yards in Argentina – Talleres Dársena Norte (also known as TANDANOR, and today known as Complejo industrial naval argentino, CINAR). I will also identify and analyse stages in the history of the Argentine shipbuilding industry (ASI) to provide context to the two Argentinean shipyards studied in this book. In this sense, I highlight the role played in this path by two social actors, the state and trade unions: the former is a key factor in the trajectory of the ASI, and the struggles of the latter have achieved the shipyard’s survival.1 Founded in 1879, TANDANOR was originally established for the maintenance of the Argentinean naval fleet. TANANDOR/CINAR, with a history of more than a century, has acquired, in the past twenty years, a symbolic status as one of the oldest shipyards in Argentina, and the first to be privatised in 1991, then managed by its workers for nearly a decade, and finally renationalised in 2007. TANDANOR is a representative example of the peaks and troughs of the Argentinean economy. 1 The sources used in these pages are: statistics (national, provincial, and chambers of com- merce), institutional documents, and reports and balance sheets of TANDANOR and the trade associations: the Federation of Industry Naval Argentina (FINA), the Association of Buenos Aires shipbuilding (ABIN). For the diagnosis and proposals of the shipbuilding trade unions, I privileged two sources: key informant interviews and the local press.

Career in the Merchant Navy Written and Compiled by; Bonani Dhar, Adviser Training, CDGI, Indore Development Sociologist, Training & Gender Specialist Ex-World Bank & UN ___________________________ __________________________________ Career in the Indian Navy is to serve the motherland with pride. The Indian Navy is the naval branch of the Indian Armed Forces. The President of India is the Supreme Commander of the Indian Navy. The Chief of Naval Staff, a four-star Admiral, commands the navy. A Career in Merchant Navy is one of the very lucrative options available at present times in terms of career growth and aspirations, opportunity to travel around the world, meet different people and have a taste and feel of culture, food, festivals of various countries. The opportunity to travel around the world and the lure of adventure on the high seas, besides the possibility of high remunerations attracts many youngsters to make a career in the Merchant Navy. Merchant Navy is different from the navy in the sense that it offers commercial services, as opposed to the navy, which is largely involved in the defense of a nation. Merchant Navy is the backbone of international leisure tourism and trade, carrying tourists and cargo all over the world. The merchant ships employ a huge number of workers to carry and deliver goods from one country to another. Without the merchant navy, much of the import-export business would come to a grinding halt! A career in the merchant navy is considered a glamorous job, especially by the people who have been bitten by the travel bug. It offers an opportunity to visit new and exotic places all around the globe.

  • UK Maritime Industry Introduction – Making Waves
STEM Choices 7. Industry Focus 7.30 UK Maritime Industry Introduction – Making waves Although very few people are aware of it, over 90% of the UK’s visible trade moves by sea. Worldwide, the shipping industry continues to expand to meet the demands of globalisation – in the last 40 years the world’s population has doubled yet maritime trade has quadrupled. Ships carry 77% of world trade and seaborne trade is forecast to almost double over the next 15 years. With increasing world trade and growing maritime leisure interests, the range of supporting maritime activities is always growing. Most people are surprised about the scale and diversity of the UK Maritime Industry. In fact the maritime sector covers everything from shipping to sub-sea technology, ports to aquaculture, maritime legal and financial services to leisure, and from the Royal Navy to commercial fishing. The UK has a great maritime history and today boasts the largest maritime sector in Europe. With a turnover of over £56 billion – bigger than automotive and more than double the size of aerospace and agriculture combined – and directly employing approximately 410,000 people, the sector makes a massive contribution to our economy. We are technological leaders in offshore oil and gas extraction, and strong in marine manufacturing; we are world-beaters in yacht design, building and racing; we have some of the most prestigious cruise companies in the world; and London is the world centre for maritime financial and legal services. The maritime industry is one that combines travel, technology, good pay, safe working conditions, and real opportunities to reach full potential.
