The effort and determination displayed by every child was exemplary, as was their behaviour. Torrington Aquathlon The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the aquathlon. Their team spirit towards each other and the children from other schools was outstanding. Class One, Monday 17th June, Pirates at Skern Lodge Outdoor Activity Centre The children will be spending the day at Skern Lodge to support their pirates topic. They will be rafting on the River Torridge and will be taking part in team challenges at the Skern Lodge base. Children will need to be dropped off at Skern Lodge at 9.00 am and collected at 2.00 pm. Your child will need a packed lunch and snacks with a non-fizzy drink. Your child will need their swimming trunks/costume, a towel, clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty and bring some old trainers or shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. Your child will also need a waterproof coat, sun hat and sun block as appropriate. Year Five, Monday 17th June, Beach Volley Sport, Croyde Your child will need to wear their school PE kit and bring a packed lunch with plenty of non- fizzy drinks and should have sunblock and a hat and a waterproof coat depending on the weather. Your child will need to be dropped off at the Village Hall at 8.50 am and the coach will be leaving at 9.00 am promptly. The children will return to school for a normal pick up time. Wednesday 19th June Sports Day We will be starting at 1.00 pm and following a similar format to last year. For the first half, the children will be competing in teams, in events such as the vortex throw and the water carry. In the second half, we will be having sprints and longer distance races. Everyone will have the opportunity to compete in all of the races. The children will be free to leave with parents or carers at the end of Sports Day, or they will be walked back to school for a usual 3.30pm finish. Please notify your child’s teacher if you are taking your child from the field. Please car share where possible or park in the village and walk to the Goodleigh Playing Field on Northleigh Road. Staff are unable to steward car parking as they will be responsible for the children, therefore any cars parked on the field may experience a delay in departing. Year Three, Thursday 20th June, Tri Golf Skills at Saunton Sands Your child will need their school PE kit, a packed lunch and plenty of non-fizzy drinks, a warm waterproof coat or sun cream and a hat depending on the weather. The children will leave and return during the school day. School packed lunches can be ordered on Monday morning; please telephone or email [email protected] to order a packed lunch. The Torridge flows from its headwaters near Hartland, down to Okehampton where it picks up the Lew and Okement, widening into steeper-sided valleys at Rosemoor and Great Torrington, and out to the estuary at Bideford. This is a predominantly farmed landscape of heavy, poorly drained soils and variable agricultural productivity. Land management is a major source of employment, with small mixed farms, intensive dairy units, conifer plantations and tiny settlements.     Wild Walks Halsdon Enjoy the woods and water of ‘Ravilious country’ in a walk for all seasons A Torridge and Tarka Trail trek Visit one of Devon Wildlife Trust’s most popular nature reserves. A variety of waymarked trails through Halsdon’s oak woodland and along the River Torridge allow you to explore this beautiful site. The 8 mile walk also takes in Beaford Wood, the landscaped parkland of the Heanton Satchville estate, a section of the Tarka Trail and two crossings over the Torridge. The riverside hide at Halsdon is the place for views of kingfishers and – for the lucky very early morning walker – otters. This is a fine wood for bluebells in spring and fungi in autumn. Bird life includes nuthatch, great spotted woodpecker and pied flycatcher.
