Cutting patterns in D.W. Griffith’s Biographs: An experimental statistical study Mike Baxter, 16 Lady Bay Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 5BJ, U.K. (e-mail: [email protected]) 1 Introduction A number of recent studies have examined statistical methods for investigating cutting patterns within films, for the purposes of comparing patterns across films and/or for summarising ‘average’ patterns in a body of films. The present paper investigates how different ideas that have been proposed might be combined to identify subsets of similarly constructed films (i.e. exhibiting comparable cutting structures) within a larger body. The ideas explored are illustrated using a sample of 62 D.W Griffith Biograph one-reelers from the years 1909–1913. Yuri Tsivian has suggested that ‘all films are different as far as their SL struc- tures; yet some are less different than others’. Barry Salt, with specific reference to the question of whether or not Griffith’s Biographs ‘have the same large scale variations in their shot lengths along the length of the film’ says the ‘answer to this is quite clearly, no’. This judgment is based on smooths of the data using seventh degree trendlines and the observation that these ‘are nearly all quite different one from another, and too varied to allow any grouping that could be matched against, say, genre’1. While the basis for Salt’s view is clear Tsivian’s apparently oppos- ing position that some films are ‘less different than others’ seems to me to be a reasonably incontestable sentiment. It depends on how much you are prepared to simplify structure by smoothing in order to effect comparisons. -

1 “Trying to plan for the future without a sense of the past is like trying to plant cut flowers” --Daniel Boorstin, historian and Librarian of Congress The Wisconsin Idea: The Vision that Made Wisconsin Famous Introduction To the practitioners who comprise UW-Madison’s Community Partnerships and Outreach (CPO) Staff Network, the Wisconsin Idea is at the heart of their day-to-day work with communities in Wisconsin and beyond. But the original meaning of the Wisconsin Idea has faded over time, replaced by a generic public service mandate. (1) “The Boundaries of the University are the Boundaries of the State” The “Year of the Wisconsin Idea” offers us an opportunity to reflect on how the Wisconsin Idea guides our practice. We chose to explore the history of the emergence of the Wisconsin Idea in an attempt to renew and clarify our vision for why and how we engage with the public to address pressing issues. It turns out that the history of the University’s engagement with the State offers much more relevant guidance than we would have imagined. The values that drove the founders of the WI Idea—truth, self- governance, egalitarianism, integrity, trust and social capital—are the same values that represent effective, democratic partnerships today. It’s evident in our practice, and now it’s evident in our history as well, thanks to the work of Gwen Drury, Ph.D. student in Educational Policy and Leadership Analysis at UW-Madison. The rich history she details here brings us closer to our best practices—equitable, reciprocal engagement in which knowledge is co-created by the University and communities working together on issues that matter to all of us. -

WEDNESDAY 1 IMAGINATION IS THE 21ST CENTURY TECHNOLOGY AUGUST 8-11, 2012 WELCOME Welcome to Columbia College Chicago and the 2012 University Film and Video Association Conference. We are very excited to have Peter Sims, author of Little Bets: How Breakthrough Ideas Emerge From Small Discoveries, as our keynote speaker. Peter’s presentation on the morning of Wednesday August 8 will set the context for the overall conference focus on creativity and imagination in film and video education. The numerous panel discussions and presentations of work to follow will summarize the current state of our field and offer opportunities to explore future directions. This year we have a high level of participation from vendors servicing our field who will present the latest technologies, products, and services that are central to how we teach everything from theory and critical studies to hands-on screen production. Of course, Chicago is one of the world’s greatest modern cities, and the Columbia College campus is ideally placed in the South Loop for access to Lake Michigan and Grant Park with easy connections to the music and theater venues for which the city is so well known. As research has shown that representation of ethnicity may be especially influential to children viewers, and that there are precedents for problematic racial representations in popular media, including children's media, the continued examination of patterns of racial-ethnic group member representation and stereotyping in character depictions has significant implications. Utilizing textual analysis, three Nicktoons’ programs are examined for racialized constructions of characters, including constructions with hegemonic and ethnocentric implications. The thesis argues that three programs, Back at the Barnyard, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Tak and the Power of JuJu problematically construct analogies of African Americans, Asians, and native peoples, respectively. The constructions in these Nicktoons programs typically “other” these groups when contrasted to dominant white culture -- or at least the animated stand-ins for dominant white culture -- and imply cultural hierarchies in which white culture is superior and/or the norm. -

SOCIAL CENTERS IN WISCONSIN, 1911-1915 VICTOR JEW One year before he was elected President of the United States, Governor Woodrow Wilson of New Jersey addressed the First National Conference on Social Center Development in Madison, Wisconsin. His opening remarks on October 25, 1911, aptly described the social center movement: It is necessary that simple means should be found by which, by an interchange of points of view, we may get together, for the whole process of modern life, the whole process of politics, is a process by which we must exclude misunderstandings ... bring all men into common counsel and so discover what is the common interest .... There is no sovereignty of the people if the several sections of the people are at loggerheads with one another. Sovereignty comes with cooperation ... everywhere you find men ... determined to solve the problems by acting together, no matter what older bonds they may break, no matter what former prepossessions they may throw off, determined to get together.1 What was to be the "simple means" by which people would recognize their commonality and exercise their sovereignty? What was to be the mechanism for the new citizenship? for the Madison conferees the local schoolhouse, operating as the neighborhood community center, served this purpose. At the schoolhouse citizens would organize themselves into a "deliberative body to supplant party divisions." The social center within the local school would serve as a Victor Jew received a B.A. in History from the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his M.A. at the University of Wisconsin Madison, where he is currently writing his dissertation on a social history of arson in the United States. -

Banner Moments: The National Anthem in American Life Unlike the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, or even the American Flag, Francis Scott Key’s song “The Star-Spangled Banner” lacks a singular icon that defines it. Rather the song must be brought to life through performance. Individuals sing the anthem into a fleeting materiality, simultaneously constructing themselves as a community while inscribing the song ever more deeply into cultural memory. The artifacts in this exhibit capture material iterations of the song and thus record the crystallization of an American national consciousness. -

Burke This dissertation analyzes theological concepts in silent moving pictures made for commercial distribution from 1902 to 1927, and examines how directors and scenarists sorted through competing belief systems to select what they anticipated would be palatable theological references for their films. A fundamental assumption of this study is that, the artistic and aesthetic pretensions of many silent-era filmmakers notwithstanding, directors generally made decisions in the conception, production and marketing of films primarily to maximize profits in a ruthlessly competitive environment. -

Studies the writings of French doctors Itard and Séguin, who worked with disabled children. 1897-98 Audits courses in pedagogy at the University of Rome; reads all major works in educational philosophy over the past 200 years. 1899 Attends women’s congress in London; received by Queen Victoria. 1899-1906 Lectureship in hygiene and anthropology at the teacher training college for women in Rome. 1900 Works at the psychiatric clinic in Rome. Appointed director of the Orthophrenic School, a model school for training teachers of children with developmental disabilities. For two years, she experiments at the model school with materials to stimulate the senses.
