ACT HEALTH VACATION STUDY PROGRAM PROJECT SUMMARY Inclusion of trans and gender diverse healthcare in the medical school Project Title curriculum Supervisor Dr Sarah Martin Canberra Sexual Health Centre, Canberra Hospital, PO Box 11, WODEN, Address ACT 2606 Telephone 02 5124 2184 Email [email protected] Outline of the project The Australian National University (ANU) Medical School curriculum currently lacks co- ordinated content in relation to LGBTIQ* healthcare, in particular care of the trans and gender diverse individual. This is at odds with the healthcare needs of the ACT population, and ACT Government policy of “service improvements to deliver more inclusive and accessible services” to LGBTIQ* community members https://www.cmtedd.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/1378184/Capital-of-Equality-An-ACT- Government-strategy.pdf This project would: • identify best practice in inclusion of trans and gender diverse healthcare issues in medical school curricula by literature review and focus groups through peer led consultation • audit the current ANU medical school curriculum • translate findings into curriculum improvement, the latter in conjunction with key stakeholders in the medical school, and primary care and in the community, with a particular focus on teaching in year 2 of the medical school • develop a medical student survey for the assessment of knowledge pre- and post- teaching in year 2 of the medical school Proposed research methods Literature review of teaching practices in trans and gender diverse health in medical schools Audit of Australian National University medical school curriculum Key stakeholder interviews/focus groups regarding curriculum improvement Survey design Preferred study discipline being undertaken by the student Medicine Potential benefits to the student and to the department To the student Gain skills in literature review, academic audit, stakeholder consultation, development of integrated teaching materials to promote excellence in LGBTIQ healthcare, report writing, survey development To Canberra Health Services This project has the potential to support CHS alignment with ACT Government policy, as so many ANU medical school graduates remain in the ACT as junior doctors. The project may guide improved diversity and inclusion training for CHS employees in the scope of LGBTQI* health service needs.
