Kelly, released on February 18, 2003 by Jive Records. Recording sessions took place mainly at Rockland Studios and Chicago Recording Company in Chicago, Illinois, and the album was written, arranged and produced primarily by R. Kelly. Chocolate Factory was conceived by Kelly amid controversy over her sex scandal at the time. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling more than 532,000 copies in its first week of sales. It achieved success in international markets and produced three singles that achieved the success of the charts, including Snake and Step in the Name of Love, and the international hit Ignition (Remix). Chocolate Factory was well received by critics, receiving rave reviews from publications such as The New York Times and USA Today. The album has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide, and received sales certifications in the United States and the United Kingdom. Background recording sessions for the album took place mainly at Rockland Studios and Chicago Recording Company in Chicago. [3] Other recording locations include the recording plant, in Los Angeles, California, Soup Can Music in Harper Woods, Michigan, and Vanguard Studios in Oak Park, Michigan. [3] Chocolate Factory was written, arranged and produced entirely by R. Kelly. It was released on February 18, 2003 on Jive Records, after a year of legal indictments for which she was acquitted in 2008. [4] Chocolate Factory music and lyrics comprise slow jams and optimistic club tracks, and many of his songs are based on classical with choruses and calling and response harmonies inspired by temptations, Marvin Gaye and . Kelly's voice is weathe between singing and rapping. Kelefa Sanneh of The New York Times writes that he packs his verses full of words, then improvises a complicated vocal line around a simple melody. [5] The of the album's lyrics focus on romance. In Forever, Kelly sings about an exaggerated fantasy of married life, with a picket fence, dog and a house / About 12 children, you're cooking me breakfast in the morning, tomorrow, take out the trash. The animated Ignition (Remix) is a lustful song built on the double automotive senses. On Metacritic, which assigns a standardized rating of 100 to reviews from top critics, the album received an average score of 65, based on 10 reviews, indicating generally favorable reviews. [6] Kelefa Sanneh of The New York Times found the album elegant and strange. [5] Mojo stated: Chocolate Factory seems positively inspired... An impressively varied work,[10] and BBC Online stated that [Kelly] does not sound like a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders, but a soul revived in spiritual euphoria. [16] Sterling Clover of The Village Voice noted the quantity and consistency of the album's sonic presence and praised Kelly's performance regarding the structures of her songs, stating that Kelly has inherited how to land on tight rhythmic bass and a solid backing chorus, refiguring them in tiered and discontinuous sound sheets. [17] Anthony DeCurtis of Rolling Stone cited Chocolate Factory as one of the best works of his career and went on to write ... as a singer, songwriter and producer, he is at the top of his game. [12] In a mixed review, Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine wrote that Kelly's composition skills leave much to be desired; for every You Knock Me Out powered by hooks there is a Showdown, an asinine insult and full of interludes to composers everywhere. [18] Q wrote that as always, [the songs on the album] are between the infectious and clichéd slush nigglingly. [11] Chicago Tribune writer Greg Kot considered that the latter's subtext makes it sound like a musical turn control, a public relations manifesto as much as an R&B album. There are a few moments when the disconnect between Kelly's lyrics and his sordid legal problems becomes disturbing, no more than when he refers to himself as the 'pied piper of R&B' in 'Step in the Name of Love', a reference to the fairytale figure who sedating a village full of children away from his parents. [19] Dan Leroy of Yahoo! Music felt that Kelly's hot-blooded is an integral part of his character; you can barely stray from the R&B cliff that has made it what it is, despite the underage sex scandal that makes it small. [20] In Kelly's performance, Leroy concluded by writing: In the end, however, he is the genius of R who pulls his bare ass out of this fire. Channeling gaye's greats to Wonder, his stripped bangers hit harder, his ballads have more bluster gospel, and he sings with despair a man of love who knows that are waiting at his bedroom door. [20] Nathan Rabin of The A.V. Club wrote that Kelly sutures her hopelessly cheesy come-ons and loving promises... along with such trades and invests them with such conviction that they become a strange kind of pulp poetry, adding that it combines their shamelessness with a gift for the elaboration of melodies that are buried in the subconscious of listeners with almost sadistic force. [21] Keith Harris of The Rolling Stone Album Guide (2004) wrote that by the album's release, Kelly had apparently learned from 's advertising errors, because the new Kelly was less haunted, though no less. The hit 'Ignition (Remix)' was his hottest pick-up to date, and set the tone for the new album, and perhaps a new stage in his career. [13] Accolades The album was included in Rolling Stone's 50 Best Albums of 2003. [22] Chocolate Factory was ranked on several New Year's Eve charts, including Blender magazine's 2003 album list at number 12 and The Village Voice's Pazz & Jop critics' poll at number 44. [23] Three writers of the New York Times team included him in their top ten lists for 2003. [26] Chocolate Factory was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album, and Step in the Name of Love was nominated for Best Male Vocal Performance R&B. [27] Rhapsody named it the second best R&B album of the first decade of the 21st century. [28] Billboard magazine ranked Chocolate Factory at number 169 on its list of the 200 Best Albums of the Decade. [29] The commercial performance Chocolate Factory was first released by Jive Records on February 17, 2003, in the United Kingdom,[30] and then on February 18 in the United States. [31] It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, with first-week sales of more than 532,000 copies. [4] Following the release of Kelly's hit single Ignition (Remix), which peaked at number two on the , the album went on to sell more than 2.72 million copies in the United States. [32] Other hits released from Chocolate Factory included Snake with Big Tigger, peaking at number 16, and the classic step anthem, Step in the Name of Love, reaching number 9. Awards[edit] The packaging design of the album is very similar to the design of Parliament's Chocolate City album.
