Zawia DEAN OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 2018 Abstract Works of Epic Fantasy often have the reputation of being formulaic, conservative works that simply replicate the same tired story lines and characters over and over. This assumption prevents Epic Fantasy works from achieving wide critical acceptance resulting in an under-analyzed and under-appreciated genre of literature. While some early works do follow the same narrative path as J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Epic Fantasy has long challenged and reworked these narratives and character tropes. That many works of Epic Fantasy choose replicate the patriarchal structures found in our world is disappointing, but it is not an inherent feature of the genre.

  • Magical Realism As Literary Activism in the Post-Cold War US Ethnic Novel
Momentary Magic: Magical Realism as Literary Activism in the Post-Cold War US Ethnic Novel Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University BY Anne Mai Yee Jansen M.A., M.Ed., B.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Chadwick Allen, Advisor Pranav Jani Martin Joseph Ponce Copyright by Anne Mai Yee Jansen 2013 Abstract In the aftermath of the Cold War, the social climate was largely hostile toward minority activist rhetoric. In this era, some US writers of color turned to magical realism – a genre typically associated with Latin American authors of the 1960s – to criticize social injustice through the use of magic. Magical realism interrogates historical and social conditions through supernatural, mythical, or other non-realist characters and events. In many otherwise realist novels by US writers of color, moments of magic disrupt concepts of “reality” and complicate social and political inequalities. My comparative study investigates the intersections of magic, politics, and activism in magical realist novels by African American, Asian American, Chicano/Latino, and Native American authors by organizing the chapters around four recurrent themes: history, haunting, folklore, and shifting borders. This project explores how alternative visions of empowerment and engagement open up space within which writers of color can work against oppressive forces of racism and imperialism. I begin by tracing the genealogy of the term “magical realism,” acknowledging the problems inherent in this term before turning to the genre’s foundation in postcolonial nations and its historical use as a vehicle for anti-imperialist critiques.

He was a superstar there for two decades, every bit as successful in France at that time as his compatriot Steve Cauthen was in Britain. Five times Cash was France’s champion jockey. He was an Arc winner, he won four French Derbys and every French Classic at least once, and more than 70 G1s worldwide. If there had been a TRC Global Rankings back then, he would have been a regular in the higher reaches of the world top ten. After I arrived in the States in 2014, Cash Asmussen had disappeared from the public eye.

Ghaiyyath, Magical Clash with Turf Bid on the line in Irish Champion A scintillating matchup between GHAIYYATH (IRE) and MAGICAL (IRE) is ontap Saturday at Leopardstown in the 1 ¼-mile, $1.408 million “Win and You’re In” Irish Champion Stakes (G1), with an automatic starting berth into the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) lying in the balance. Ireland takes center stage this weekend, as Leopardstown, just south of Dublin, and The Curragh, in County Kildare, will offer five “Win and You’re In” contests for Breeders’ Cup turf races, while stateside Kentucky Downs will offer one as well. Godolphin’s Ghaiyyath is widely considered the best turf horse in the world off a 4-for-4 campaign for trainer Charlie Appleby, which includes a trio of Group 1 wins in the Coronation at Newmarket in June, the Coral-Eclipse over Enable (GB) at Sandown in July, and the Juddmonte International over Magical at York Aug. 19. The International was a “Win and You’re In” for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), but Appleby is likely to keep Ghaiyyath, a 5-year-old son of Dubawi (IRE) who is 9-for-12 lifetime, on the turf.
