MOTTO: Dread God, Biodh eagal de Ort, The Fear Of God Be Upon You SEPTS: Dingwall, Foulis, Fowlis, MacCullich, MacLullich, Vass, Wass, Munro (all spellings) A Short History: The origins of Clan Munro are lost in the distant past. By tradition, 11th C mercenary soldiers from Ireland, they were granted Lands in Ross by a grateful King after assisting him in defeating the Viking invaders of this part of Scotland. From documentary evidence, they were well established by the middle of the 14th C on the north shore of the Cromarty Firth in the area known as Ferindonald (Donald's land) after their legendary first chief. From this narrow base comprising the modern parishes of Kiltearn and Alness they gradually spread their sphere of influence northwards and eastwards into the fertile plain of Easter Ross. Loyal to the Crown, early in the reformation the Chief and his followers adopted the Protestant faith, a move which greatly influenced future clan policy. Under their Chief they fought on the continent in the 30 Years War and supported the Protestant succession to the British Crown against the Catholic Stuarts during the Jacobite Risings of the C18th. Bet & I wish you the very best Christmas and the happiest New Year. I thank you for letters you have sent and for your support in making the year such a successful one. I may have caused a bit of confusion by having two Ron Munro items when they are by different people. The war reminiscences are by Ron F Munro from Bendigo and the genealogy section is by Ron D Munro from Elizabeth! Apologies for that folks. Ron F Munro has volunteered to contact all of the Munros in his area telephone book and we thank you for that, Ron. To this end, he has asked for a letter about the Clan Munro to photocopy and send out. If anyone else would like a copy, please let me know and I will send you one. We had immediate successes with our Genealogy “Can You Help” section in newsletter No 6. Two of the people who contacted me are in the same family tree as two of our members. In fact one of these was not even published, as I knew the names from other information sent to me and, if I was really on the ball, I should have been able to pick the other as well! Ron D Munro suggested that we have a birthday/anniversary book for special birthdays and anniversaries, so if you would like let me know when theses are due I will try and remember to publish them.

This was primarily due to its strategic importance as the northern gateway into the Hebrides to the west, and Caithness and Sutherland to the north. The power derived from the earldom’s strategic situation was enhanced by the status of its earls. From 1215 to 1372 the earldom was ruled by an uninterrupted MacTaggart comital dynasty which was able to capitalise on this longevity to establish itself as an indispensable authority in Scotland north of the Forth.

James Monroe of Gathering, Armadale (WA) Gathering the USA. Researchers have been trying for years o prove that he is and Anzac Day Sydney 2015. descended from the Munros of Kiltearn and now, through DNA testing, they have made that link . But more Munros need to be Anatomists, ‘Mad’ Doctors & tested. Two of these researchers are Mark Monroe from the USA and Bonesetters (Cont.) Colin Munro from Glasgow. I will be using an article from each of these gentlemen in the next two newsletters.

The original chiefs of the clan were the original Earls of Ross. The ross logo is ‘success nourishes hope’ but nowadays people just say ‘success breeds success’ . Some castles of the ross clan are: Balconie castle, Shandwick castle and Hawk head castle. Their badge is a hand holding a juniper. Clan Munro . Clan Munro is a Highland Scottish clan. Historically the clan was based in Easter Ross in the Scottish Highlands. Traditional origins of the clan give its founder as Donald Munro who came from the north of Ireland and settled in Scotland in the eleventh century. The first proven clan chief on record however is Robert de Munro who died in 1369. The clan chiefs have always been seated at Foulis Castle and styled "of Foulis". During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries the Munros feuded with their neighbours the Clan Mackenzie, and during the seventeenth century many Munros fought in the Thirty Years' War in support of Protestantism . The clan produced some of the finest troops from the highlands. Clan Mackenzie . The Mackenzies were of Celtic stock and were not among the clans that originated from Norman ancestors. They are believed to be related to Clan Matheson and Clan Anrias, all three descending from the 12th century Gilleoin of the Aird.

The response was the Clan Munro video & a Clan not what I had hoped but I did receive a number of suggestions. The one I liked best was Munro Magazine index - details “The Eagle” but that is already being used so I decided, as one member suggested, to stick on page 3. with what we had (well almost). My thanks to those who took the trouble to respond. New Zealand Family trees - could members who have not already done so, please send me their family Margaret Weeden tells me that trees. It would be good to have a data base showing all our ancestors and maybe even they hold a Clan lunch every finding those who connect. This we have already started to do, sometimes by chance! This is few months in different parts of obviously a long term project for the future & could keep Ron & myself busy when we have the country – perhaps the time to get on to it. So start those trees rolling in. something that our individual states could do. I have started a new section this month called “The Things We Do.” The purpose is to let us all know what we do or if we have retired, what we used to do.
