7. Swamp Shop. Swamp Shop Administrator Melanie Merz reports that the Swamp Shop earned $2,639.75 for the month of September. Total sales for the fiscal year are $7,224.40. This is a 27% increase over total sales at this time in FY 2012, and an 88% increase over FY2011. Typically slow summer Swamp Shop activity was boosted by a late August sale driven primarily by social media. The push resulted in a 91% increase over sales from August FY2012, and 153% over August FY2011.

8. New Media. David Stafford joined WWOZ as its new Director of New Media on September 1, 2012. During the last six weeks, the main focus of the New Media team was providing support for the Fall 2012 Membership Drive. A coordinated team of volunteer photographers produced an excellent set of artist and behind-the-scenes photos, many of which were shared with our audience on Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and wwoz.org.

Promoting Foundation events has received considerable attention. Mr. Stafford met with Scott Aiges, the Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Director of Programs, Marketing & Communications, to discuss Foundation needs. For example, WWOZ’s New Media team took photos each day of the Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival, and shared them on Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and wwoz.org. The current (October 2012) issue of the 'OZone newsletter contains items on four Foundation events and programs.

WWOZ is adjusting the way it uses social networks to encourage more dialogue, and has refined its coverage of second line and Mardi Gras Indian events through our Takin' It to the Streets feature, which has obtained Amerigroup sponsorship. A new weekly podcast series of interviews with members of the second line and Mardi Gras Indian communities has been instituted with the help of Ariana Hall. The WWOZ New Media team was also invited to attend the Knight Foundation think tank session on the future of local news, with such esteemed news organizations like Reuters, The New York Times, NPR, and others.

In addition, the New Media team reported full support for the LiveWire music calendar, the Community Events calendar, the [email protected] inbox, and all Swamp Shop operations, editing the 'OZone monthly newsletter, and daily Facebook and Twitter activity.

9. Outreach. On September 5, 2012, the Outreach & Development team participated in Culture Collision 2012, an event that celebrates and showcases cultural and creative non-profit organizations in New Orleans. During the month of November, our new Outreach & Development Associate, Lindsey Darnell, will host a table at three upcoming festivals around New Orleans: the Bywater Mirliton Festival, Audubon Zoo’s Louisiana Swamp Festival, and the Treme Creole Gumbo Festival. 2

New York Times, Nate Chinen, “In Anguish of a Storm, an Identity Forged: New Orleans Jazz Orchestra’s ’10 Years, 1 Night’ At Carnegie,” October 9, 2012.

“Every now and again during “10 Years, 1 Night,” the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra’s grandiose, guest-laden anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall on Monday, the trumpeter Irvin Mayfield urged the crowd toward a show of rapture. He made it clear that this was for the benefit of another, unseen audience back home, tuned in to WWOZ-FM. The cheers that greeted every prompt were obliging but enthusiastic enough, and maybe a little proprietary: Mr. Mayfield, the orchestra’s founder and director, wasn’t the only person in the hall who wanted the evening to sound, from afar, like a smashing success.”

Times-Picayune, “Diana Pinckley, Communications Strategist, Civic Activist and Book Reviewer, Dies at 60,” September 27, 2012.

Diana Pinckley, a public-relations executive and communications strategist who became active on many fronts after Hurricane Katrina as a community volunteer striving to rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, died Wednesday of cancer at her New Orleans home. She was 60.

"Helping creative people prosper made Pinckley tick," said Richard McCarthy, the market's executive director. "Scan the landscape of good things happening. In all likelihood, there was Pinckley, leading from behind. She never sought the spotlight, though she deserved it. She found far greater pleasure in helping others with talent and good intentions grow."

Ms. Pinckley raised money for WWNO-FM and was an active volunteer at WWOZ-FM. She frequently went on the air to raise money for the latter station, which was a major passion of hers because of her devotion to New Orleans music. Whenever Ms. Pinckley did a fundraising broadcast, she always exceeded the goal for her time slot.

One such gig occurred shortly after Women of the Storm's third trip to Washington, where Ms. Pinckley was one of a group chosen to go to Vice President Joe Biden's office to meet with his staff. That didn't faze her, but when she was at WWOZ two days later with a renowned local musician, she couldn't contain her enthusiasm, sending out this text in capital letters: "I'M IN THE STUDIO WITH DAVE BARTHOLOMEW!"
