Per our discussions at the Board Retreat in September, Lauren Del Rio will be compiling the necessary documents for a thoughtful and straightforward proposal. David Freedman and Lauren Del Rio attended Irvin Mayfield and New Orleans Jazz Orchestra’s live broadcast at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Swamp Shop. Swamp Shop Administrator Melanie Merz reports that the Swamp Shop earned $2,639.75 for the month of September. Total sales for the fiscal year are $7,224.40. This is a 27% increase over total sales at this time in FY 2012, and an 88% increase over FY2011. Typically slow summer Swamp Shop activity was boosted by a late August sale driven primarily by social media. The push resulted in a 91% increase over sales from August FY2012, and 153% over August FY2011. 8. New Media. David Stafford joined WWOZ as its new Director of New Media on September 1, 2012. During the last six weeks, the main focus of the New Media team was providing support for the Fall 2012 Membership Drive. A coordinated team of volunteer photographers produced an excellent set of artist and behind-the-scenes photos, many of which were shared with our audience on Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and wwoz.org. Promoting Foundation events has received considerable attention. Mr. Stafford met with Scott Aiges, the Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Director of Programs, Marketing & Communications, to discuss Foundation needs. For example, WWOZ’s New Media team took photos each day of the Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival, and shared them on Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, and wwoz.org. The current (October 2012) issue of the 'OZone newsletter contains items on four Foundation events and programs. WWOZ is adjusting the way it uses social networks to encourage more dialogue, and has refined its coverage of second line and Mardi Gras Indian events through our Takin' It to the Streets feature, which has obtained Amerigroup sponsorship. A new weekly podcast series of interviews with members of the second line and Mardi Gras Indian communities has been instituted with the help of Ariana Hall. The WWOZ New Media team was also invited to attend the Knight Foundation think tank session on the future of local news, with such esteemed news organizations like Reuters, The New York Times, NPR, and others. In addition, the New Media team reported full support for the LiveWire music calendar, the Community Events calendar, the [email protected] inbox, and all Swamp Shop operations, editing the 'OZone monthly newsletter, and daily Facebook and Twitter activity. 9. Outreach. On September 5, 2012, the Outreach & Development team participated in Culture Collision 2012, an event that celebrates and showcases cultural and creative non-profit organizations in New Orleans. This past weekend (October 12-14), the Outreach Krewe hosted a table at the Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival in conjunction with Melanie Merz, who oversaw Swamp Shop merchandise sales at the event. During the month of November, our new Outreach & Development Associate, Lindsey Darnell, will host a table at three upcoming festivals around New Orleans: the Bywater Mirliton Festival, Audubon Zoo’s Louisiana Swamp Festival, and the Treme Creole Gumbo Festival. 2 WWOZ Governance Board Meeting Wednesday, October 17, 2012 Manager’s Report 10. No Cover Charge, Volume 37 of WWOZ’s compilation CD series featuring recordings of WWOZ broadcasts from a variety of local music venues, was issued in October as part of the Fall Membership Drive. The interviews were aired during the Saturday afternoon World Journey with Suzanne Corley program on August 25, 2012. 12. New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, October 8, 2012. In addition, our Outreach/Swamp Shop team offered WWOZ memorabilia at the WWOZ Swamp Shop Booth. The event was held in Lafayette Square. The broadcast, which took place over the weekend of October 13 and 14, featured live musical performances by Ernie Vincent & the Topcats, Lil' Buck Sinegal, The Bo-Keys with Otis Clay, Keb Mo’, Richard Smith, Ironing Board Sam, Lattimore, and Clarence Carter. 14. 2012 Voodoo Music Experience. • Louisiana MUSIC: Then & Now
SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION LOUISIANA MUSIC: THEN & NOW If a rich history and world-acclaimed cuisine are the head and heart of Louisiana, music is its collective soul. The music of Louisiana meanders through generations of history carrying melodies of dreams, hope, lament and the boundless spirit of one of the most diverse populations in America. Signature Louisiana sounds can be found throughout the state, in both urban centers and rural countrysides. From grand concert halls to obscure roadside honky-tonks, travelers find a rich, abundant musical legacy that is distinctly and unmistakably Louisiana. The offerings are varied, from the state’s indigenous jazz, Cajun and zydeco music to its musicians’ notable contributions to the history and evolution of American blues, country and rock n’ roll. All carry a common denominator that could be summed up by what Louisiana residents call joie de vivre, or the joy of life. The coming year marks a statewide celebration of Louisiana music. Throughout 2013, notable artists, state tourism industry officials, national music industry stakeholders and Louisiana residents will join hands to acknowledge the state’s contributions to the soul of America. Read on to feel the rhythm of Louisiana. SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION SMOOTH JAZZ Jazz was born in New Orleans, specifically in the city’s Congo Square and the Tremé, one of the oldest neighborhoods, and first flourished in the Storyville district north of the French Quarter. It is a percussive and often improvisational fusion of European, African and Caribbean music using wind and rhythm instruments that came to prominence in the early 20th century.
