A Message from the Supervisor

Dear Orangetown Residents: Did you know that Orangetown has an amazing variety of recreation - al programs? It’s one of the reasons that I love living here. From courses, soccer fields, playgrounds, and courts to mountain forests and paved bike trails, Orangetown’s park system has it all. Summer is one of the most exciting times of year in Orangetown’s parks. Under the leadership of Superintendent Aric Gorton, our Parks & Recreation Department has put together an outstanding set of programs for kids, teens, and adults! Our two golf courses, the 27-hole Blue Hill and the 9-hole Broadacres, both now oper - ated successfully by Applied Golf, continue to draw faithful golf enthusiasts, while miles of trails and acres of open space call those seeking options for passive and active recre - ation. Explore the Nike Site – formerly a Nike Hercules radar tracking station for the U.S. gov - ernment – offering hiking, open space, and scenic views from atop Clausland Mountain. Take a stroll along a stream in Pascack Brook Park, play tennis at Independence Park, or shoot some hoops at Veterans Memorial Park. Swing, slide and climb with your children in one of the many playgrounds throughout town. One of the most visible and exciting additions to our parks system is the NYS Department of Transportation’s long-awaited work on Phase II of the Joseph B. Clarke Rail Trail. When completed, 1.25 miles will be added to the existing 2.5 mile trail, allow - ing residents to get from Blauvelt to Orangeburg, Sparkill, Palisades, Piermont, Grandview, South Nyack and Nyack on foot or on bike. And don’t forget to enjoy the free summer concerts at Veteran’s Memorial Park – once again we have a great lineup of entertainment! If you’re new to town, or haven’t yet explored all that our Parks & Recreation Department has to offer, we hope you’ll get outdoors, get moving, and visit Orangetown’s 26 town parks and open space areas this spring. Visiting a new park is a good way to explore a different part of Orangetown. Have an idea for a new program you’d like the Town to offer – or a suggestion to improve an existing program? Share your ideas by calling the Parks and Recreation Department at 359-6503 or emailing – [email protected]. Sincerely, Andy Stewart, Town Supervisor

The fundamentals of each sport will be taught by Skyhawks Sports Camps. Sports camps for children grades Kindergarten to 5th grade will be held at the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Orangeburg. These programs will emphasize the basic skills and fundamentals of each of the following sports: baseball/softball, basket - ball and soccer. The mini-hawk sport camps will be for children entering kinder - garten , 1st and 2nd grades only and will be an introductory program for young children that will explore multiple sports in a fun setting. In order to participate, children must be entering the appropriate grade as of September 2016. Veteran's Memorial Park: Monday through Friday 9:00 am - 12:00 Noon Starting New at Golf Skyhawks Golf focuses on building the confidence of young athletes by teaching proper technique to refine essential skills of the game. Golf is a challenging and lifelong sport, so young athletes need proper focus on the fundamentals of form, swinging, putting, and body positioning. To assist in this training, Skyhawks has adopted the SNAG (Starting New At Golf) system to its curriculum. SNAG utilizes a set of equipment designed for beginning golfers, including oversized plastic club heads and “mini tennis balls” to help build confidence and to have fun. Developed by PGA professionals, SNAG is specifically designed for the entry-level player; SNAG simplifies instruction so that young players can make an easy and effective transition onto the golf course. No need to bring your own clubs--all equipment is provided. We keep the instructor-to-camper ratio low, resulting in limited avail - ability. These programs fill up quickly. Mini-Hawk This multi-sport program was developed to give children a positive first step into athletics. The essentials of baseball, basketball and soccer are taught in a safe, structured environment with lots of encouragement and a big focus on fun. Our Mini-Hawk games and activities were designed to allow campers to explore bal - ance, movement, hand/eye coordination, and skill development at their own pace. Skyhawks staff are trained to handle the specific needs of young athletes. Multi-Sport Our multi-sport camp is designed to introduce young athletes to a variety of dif - ferent sports in one setting. For this program we combine soccer, baseball/soft - ball, basketball, flag football, capture the flag and ultimate frisbee into one fun- filled week. Athletes will learn the rules and essentials of each sport through skill-based games and scrimmages. By the end of the week, your child will walk away with knowledge of multiple sports along with vital life lessons such as respect, teamwork, and self-discipline.

MAD SCIENCE SUMMER 2016 CAMP TOPICS

BRIXOLOGY Camp lays the foundation for our next generation of makers! Kids learn about different types of engineering and then team up to construct different engineer - ing-themed projects using LEGO® bricks. They learn about aerospace engineer - ing while assembling a space station. They explore mechanical engineering as they build boats and vehicles. That’s not all…from carnival rides to drawing machines, mechanical animals to truss bridges, your future engineer will build upon their creativity to solve real-world design challenges, while developing their problem-solving and team-building skills. Take home projects are provided each day, most of which are brick-based and can be used with LEGO® bricks at home. Let the tinkering begin! Appropriate for students entering grades 3 - 6 © 2016 Mad Science Group Inc. All rights reserved. NATURE ADVENTURE Explore the natural world and the adaptations that allow birds and beasts to thrive. There is a new and different fun take-home project each day. Make plas - ter casts of animal tracks. Learn how animals protect themselves: survive icy cold like a polar bear and dissect oysters to see how they resist an annoying itch. Build a bird feeder and mix your own seed blend to attract specific bird species. Make recycled paper. Tie-dye t-shirts with vegetable dyes. Test water for pollution, and then build a water filter to remove anything nasty. Construct a bug house for observing real, live bugs. Study the feeding habits of owls and look at the animal bones they leave behind. Learn about geology by growing your own crystal garden and breaking open your own geode. And pan for spectacular gems and minerals that can be found in the Hudson Valley. Appropriate for students entering grades 1 - 5 NASA: JOURNEY INTO OUTER SPACE Kids start in the Earth’s atmosphere and end up in the stars in this super sampler of space science. This voyage of discovery will explore planets, moons, comets, and other phenomena in our solar system. Come investigate our sun, and other stars and the galaxies they form. Build a Mad Science rocket and then design, build and launch your own version. Learn about the challenges of living in space and undergo astronaut training. Work with lenses and build a telescope. Discover technologies developed for use in outer space while navigating a laser maze. Campers will have lots of projects to make and take home including two rockets, space copter, meteorological station, star chart, and a telescope. Learn about the programming of robots by designing and building a Lego Mindstorm creation. Campers will spend time each day building a robot that they take home at the end of the week. Groups will be separated into different age groups. Appropriate for students entering grades 1 - 6 SECRET AGENT LAB Calling all agents! This camp is part forensics and part “spy science”. Step into the shoes of a detective—uncover the science involved in evidence gathering and analysis. Students will create, collect, and analyze evidence and discover what skills are necessary as a crime scene lab technician. They examine clues and get hot on the trail of a culprit, and then connect the dots using science to help solve a crime in a hands-on investigation. From edible messages and decoding clues, students will have the opportunity to check out some of the skills that spies must master as they journey into the world of espionage. Take home proj - ects include an ultraviolet Fingerprint Finder kit, Spyglasses that let you secretly watch people who are behind you, Spy-noculars, a Secret Code Breaker, and an Inspecti-kit for evidence collection. Appropriate for students entering grades 2 - 6

MAD MACHINES & CRAZY CONTRAPTIONS This inventor’s camp is designed by you—the Inventor! Each day you’ll be given a series of challenges which must be overcome using basic materials, simple machines, tips from world famous inventors and the most important thing of all – your mind. If you were stranded on a desert island how would you survive? You will need to build shelter, find food and purify water, protect yourself and your teammates from the elements and find a way off the island – or die trying (not really). Journey to the future and examine the ultramodern inventions of the 23rd century. Then design the future - today. "Create" mini-light sabers, “green energy”, and hovercraft. With a little bit of ingenuity you’ll construct catapults and forts and then lay siege, fabricate a winning Egg Drop design, construct a dancing robot. While Thomas Edison said invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration…this camp is 100% fun! Appropriate for students entering grades 1 - 5

ANCIENT ADVENTURES & BURIED BONES This is Mad Science’s archaeology/paleontology camp. Dig into the physical remains left behind by people and animals in the past. Cast a replica of a veloci - raptor skeleton, and identify ancient fossils - including some from the Hudson Valley! Delve into the mysteries of Ancient Egypt and the lost city of Pompeii. Explore the past by examining the objects that ancient peoples left behind. Mummify a mad scientist. Participate in a mock archaeological dig and assemble the pre-historic skeletal remains you uncover. Investigate the technologies used in the past and build your own monument. Decipher ancient languages and preserve genuine artifacts. You can even take home an actual Roman coin that is over a thousand years old! Appropriate for students entering grades 2 - 6

SCIENCE MYSTERIES & FANTASTIC FORCES (2014) This super science sampler lets kids investigate several topics each day with cool take-home projects. Kids will be engineers, chemists, and stunt pilots! Children will have fun with physics and learn the sci - ence behind magic tricks. Your Mad Scientists will be shocked by what they learn about electricity… blown away by their experiments with air pressure… and swept away by the excitement of working with waves! They will learn about simple machines and build a propeller-powered car. Campers will make and take home their own crystal garden, a center-of-gravity game, a “magic” box which make objects disappear, a “Skyhawk” foam plane, an “Air Blaster” foam rocket launcher, a bridge building kit, a Cartesian diver, a “Drag Racer” car, and their own batch of ooey, gooey slime.
