In June 2016, the SOCSD Board of Education made a commitment to developing a districtwide strategic plan that stresses a well-designed, rigorous, and relevant curriculum; instructional strategies that emphasize a deep understanding of meaningful content along with plenty of opportunities for students to read, write, and think purposefully; and a climate wherein all members of our community feel safe, welcome and ready-to-learn. This marks the 25th anniversary for Project Graduation - a supervised, substance free, all night party for graduates. The party will start at 11:30 p.m. Thursday night, June 23rd, 2016 and ends at 5:00 a.m. on Friday morning, June 24th. The celebration is held at Tappan Zee High School and is organized by the PTSA with help from the Senior Class. The evening’s plans are in the initial stages of planning and will include lots of music with great food, and a variety of activities such as volleyball, basketball, a video game area, ping pong and table games. In addition, we have contracted with an entertainment company for the DJ/karaoke, a jousting ring, an obstacle course, a comedian, and a photo booth. While this year we still cannot offer all of the same programs that we have done in the past, our Orangetown Parks & Recreation Department has been hard at work to come up with a selection of fun family-oriented activ- ities for children, adults, and senior citizens of all fitness levels. The Town of Orangetown Parks and Recreation Department prides itself upon keeping each park and other outdoor amenities safe and beautiful for everyone to enjoy. There is truly no better place to take in the foliage and the feeling of autumn than from the vantage point of one of our hundreds of acres and numerous trails within Orangetown’s extensive network of State, County, and Town parks here in the Lower Hudson Valley. We continue to thank the Parks Department for their continued focus on and com- mitment to offering excellent public programs and services and open space preser- vation, maintaining the natural beauty of our parks and recreational resources which enrich the quality of life here in Orangetown. The parks in our community, the quality of which we are continually striving to enhance, feature playgrounds, pavilions, paved trails, athletic fields and many other outdoor amenities. As we continue this improvement process, the Town will be adding new playground equipment at three of its playground locations before wintertime, including Cherry Brook Park (Pearl River), Sparkill Park (Sparkill), & Stoughton Park (Tappan). From a variety of well-organized trips and sporting programs to recreational classes, Orangetown provides a wide selection of fun family-oriented activities for all children, adults, and senior citizens of all abilities. These programs include fitness, sports leagues, cultural arts and enrichment classes.

Rockland County continues to produce outstanding athletes year after year, so there is no shortage of qualified candidates for future years. I would personally like to congratulate Bob Veltidi as a member of this year’s induction class for his outstanding contributions to our Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame committee as both screening committee chair and past master of ceremonies. Bob exemplifies what true service to sports and community are; we are pleased to honor him with the Joseph Holland Lifetime Achievement Award. Over the past year, sadly four of our past inductees died. Ed Matott Jr. was a 2016 inductee, an outstanding Nyack High School basketball coach who roamed the “pit” in the 1960s and ‘70s, and also a well-respected soccer official. Gene Erickson, a 1985 inductee and 1949 graduate of Spring Valley High School, was an outstanding hockey goaltender who was an alternate netminder for the 1956 Olympics.
