Michael Wesch Lesson Eight Globalization Our failure to move beyond such a view has led to the tragedy of our times: that we are more connected than ever yet feel and act more disconnected. 272 The Art of Being Human THE TRAGEDY OF OUR TIMES A woman in Haiti wipes sweat from her brow as she sifts through pile of trash. This small pile sits upon a larger pile which is itself on top of what can only be described as a mountain of trash, extending several hundred meters in every direction. Most of the trash in that mountain has been shipped thousands of miles from other countries. A fire fuming with black toxic smoke burns in the background, where there is a small, emaciated cow looking for something to eat. The woman picks through rotting meat, blood- stained needles and shards of broken glass looking for anything of value – maybe a bit of metal or, if she is very lucky, a piece of discarded jewelry that she can exchange for money. The products she sifts through have their own remarkable story to tell. Most of them are pieced together from materials extracted from all over the world, put together by humans in other places around the world, shipped to still other places in the world to be used and consumed, and in some cases handed down and around to others in other parts of the world, until finally they end up here. Reason Papers Vol. 37, no. 2 Afterword The True Cost: A Capitalist Critique1 Matt Faherty Independent Scholar In Andrew Morgan’s documentary The True Cost, New York University Professor Mark Miller calls advertising a “species of propaganda,” at which point the film cuts to archival footage of actual Nazis goose-stepping in formation. Miller goes on to explain that commercial advertisements are designed to trick consumers into associating positive emotions such as personal satisfaction and social acceptance with particular products, despite there being no legitimate connection between the two. Advertisements are thus effectively tricks which covertly alter a consumer’s mindset so that he or she views the world as the advertiser sees fit. The True Cost argues that the modern fashion industry is a literally world-destroying force in which callous corporations and mindless consumers trash the environment and oppress Third-World workers for the sake of cheap garments and high fashion. In order to demonstrate its point, the film consists of endless juxtaposed shots of flashy model runways in Milan and impoverished sweatshop workers in Bangladesh. It presents wholesome organic cotton farmers talking about the dignity of rural agriculture intercut with a scientist lamenting the effects of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) by saying the word “chemical” as many times as possible in a ten- second sound bite. The documentary calls the popular desire for cheap clothes an example of mindless consumerism and then shows crazed Black Friday shoppers storming a storefront. The irony of Morgan’s condemnation of advertising as propaganda—and the very existence of this film—is apparently lost on him. -

AMI's Anti-SLAPP Motion
I TO THE HONORABLE COURT, PLAINTIFF AND COUNSEL: 2 PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on April 30, 2018, at 8:30 a.m. or as soon thereafter as 3 counsel may be heard in Depmiment 62 of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, the Hon. 4 Michael L. Stern, presiding, located at 111 N01ih Hill Street, Los Angeles, California 90012, 5 defendant American Media, Inc. ("AMI") will and hereby does move this Court for an order, 6 pursuant to California Code of Civil Procedure § 425.16 ("Section 425.16" or the "anti-SLAPP1 7 statute"), striking and dismissing, in whole or, alternatively, in pmi, the Complaint and its sole 8 cause of action for declaratory relief filed by plaintiff Karen McDougal ("McDougal") with 9 prejudice and without leave to amend.2 McDougal's cause of action for declaratory relief under 10 Code of Civil Procedure§ 1060 falls within the scope of Section 425.16(e), and, as such, the burden 11 shifts to McDougal to establish, with admissible evidence, a probability that she will prevail on her 12 cause of action, and all pmis thereof. Huddled in white terrycloth robes next to a swimming pool in Beverly Hills, Brescia and his former MTV castmates have been reunited in anticipation of The Hills: New Beginnings, a reboot of the reality show The Hills (2006–2010), which was a spin-off of another reality show called Laguna Beach (2004–2006), itself a loose interpretation of Fox’s sudsy teen drama The O.C. (2003–2007). If the franchise made celebrities out of Brescia and his band of maudlin merrymakers, it also turned them into test pilots for today’s round-the-clock strain of rampant exhibitionism. But the biggest difference between “reality” then and now has less to do with the players and everything to do with the audience, whose bullshit detector has evolved considerably since the passing of the torch from Sharon Osbourne to Kris Jenner. There was a time when Spencer Pratt, the anti-hero of The Hills, would make money for ratcheting up the drama at the expense of documentary— take, for instance, the moment when he kicked his future wife, Heidi Pratt (née Montag), out of his car during an argument, a scene they actually filmed ten times before going to dinner. “We got a million-dollar ratings bonus if we got to [a certain number of viewers], so whatever they wanted from me, I had no problem doing it,” says Spencer.
