Northwest Cross Country Meet Notes Eagles at CWU Invitational at Apple Ridge Run Saturday, Sept. 14 Women’s 4K at 11 a.m. | Men’s 6K at 11:40 a.m. CWU XC INV. @ APPLE RIDGE RUN Sat. September 14, 2019 We invite you to join us for this year’s CWU Invitaonal at Apple Ridge Run! Thanks to a generous donaon of land, funds, and me by Strand Fruit of Cowiche, WA, the creaon of a top‐notch running/racing venue in Central Washington has been realized. Our courses are essenally the same as previous years, and a map will be provided closer to the meet date. Location: Apple Ridge Run Cross Country Facility – 5000 Naches Heights Road, Yakima, WA Direcons: From Ellensburg or Tri‐Cies, take I‐82 to Yakima, and then change to Hwy 12 toward Naches. Aer passing the 40th Ave. exit, take the next le (Ackley Rd.). At the end of Ackley (a very short road), take a le onto Powerhouse Rd., followed by an immediate right onto Naches Heights Road. Aer several miles, Naches Heights Rd. is split by a stop sign. Take a le at the sign, and then the very next right to connue on Naches Heights. Aer a bit over a mile the road will curve le and you will come to the Naches Fire Staon. Take a le into the fire staon lot and proceed slowly down the dirt road between the orchards. Parking is alongside the course at the boom of the hill. Buses can return to the fire staon lot to park aer dropping teams off if there is not room next to the course. Spectators turn le on Wherry road before the fire staon to get to their main parking area. Schedule: College/Open Races: 11:00 a.m. – Women’s 4K 11:40 a.m. – Men’s 6K Awards will follow conclusion of men’s race by approx. 20‐30 minutes. (*Please note there will be a girl’s HS race at approx. 10 a.m., so watch out for them as you arrive at the course and begin warm‐ups.) Entries: Entries will be set up on Direct Athlecs (www.directathlecs.com) and are unlimited per school. Entry deadline will be on Wed. Sept. 11, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific me. Entry Fee: $100 per gender (men or women), and $200.00 for schools entering both squads. The cost for individuals and un‐ aached runners is $20.00. Please make checks out to “CWU”. Team fees may be brought the day of the race or paid online. Individuals must pay online. Course Descripons: The course set‐up involves a basic 2K loop that is run by both men and women, with a slightly different loop from the first to second mile. The course surface is enrely grass. The course has flat to rolling terrain and one fairly good sized hill the women will do once and the men twice. The course is fine for spikes, spikeless shoes or flats when it is dry, and beer with spikes if wet. Awards: T‐shirts will be presented to the top 5 individuals in each race. Facilies: Portable toilets will be available for those in aendance. There is no running water at the race venue, however, drink‐ ing water and ice will be provided, along with a CWU athlec trainer. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: PLEASE inform all coaches, athletes and spectators that staying on the trails, roads or other desig‐ nated areas is extremely important! The course is surrounded by private orchards where trespassing is not allowed. PLEASE re‐ mind folks to stay away from the apples in the orchards, as their size and beauty may aract “unlawful pickers”. Dawson Andrews paced the Eagles at 26:01.5 in fourth place. Craig Lambert was ninth at 26:29.5. The NU women placed fourth with 99 points and a team time of 2:11:58.7 in the 5K. Grace Gerardi led the Eagles in 52nd place at 21:03.6 with Emma Horn not far behind at 21:12.3. HERE’S YOUR SINE: Senior Riley Sine is the last Eagle to win a meet. He captured two titles as a sophomore, winning at Seattle Pacific and the Warrior Invitational at William Jessup University. NEWBIES: There are a number of first-year Eagles on the roster, but not all are expected to compete at Central Washington. The newcomers in- clude transfers Michael Ha (Tacoma) and Tim Ortiz (Ferndale) and freshmen Trysten Crawford (Selah) and Christian Kuch (Leavenworth) for the men. Ha comes to NU from Everett Community College and Ortiz from Whatcom CC. The new NU women are freshmen Kaylea Hartman (Selah), Breann Loeffler (Forest Grove, Oregon) and Anna Swedin (Selah) BRIGHT BULBS: The cross country teams placed eight athletes on the Cascade Collegiate Conference All-Academic squad last year and six of those are back this season. Craig Lambert and Riley Sine from the men’s team and Emily Campbell, Emma Horn, Quinn Larson-Dhaenens and Haleigh Schwartz from the women’s squad all made the grade last season. Sine, Horn and Campbell also made the NAIA Scholar Athlete list. CHARACTER COUNTS: NU Head Coach Mark Mandi in 2018 earned the Cascades Collegiate Conference Coach of Character award. Mandi has been at Northwest as head coach since 2009. He was a three-time Pac10 All-Academic and two-time All-Pac10 at the University of Washington. FROM THE RECORD BOOK: The Eagles have a few owners of top 10 NU times on the roster. Riley Sine’s 24:29 in the 2017 Warrior Invite stands third in the 8K with Dawson Andrews (8th at 25:49) and Craig Lambert (10th at 26:01) joining the list last year with their performances at the Willamette invitational. Ellie Summers turned in the 18th-best time all-time in a 5K course with an 18:52 last season at the Warrior Invitational. RANKINGS: The Eagles are ranked sixth in the 2019 Cascade Collegiate Conference Men’s Cross Country Coaches’ Preseason Poll. The NU women are seventh in their conference poll. Southern Oregon sits atop both the men’s and women’s polls. COMING UP: The Eagles head to Cottage Grove, Oregon, for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Preview Friday.
