Television shows such as, Leave it to Beaver, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet and Father Knows Best, filled the airwaves, and magazines such as McCalls and Good Housekeeping lined the news stands with pictures of the American way of life in the 1950s. A suburban, middle class life where families lived in a furnished and newly equipped modern home, complete with car, two children and a dog. Where father went to work and mother stayed at home baking and taking care of the family and left the cares of the world to her husband.[1] However, alongside this picture of an ideal America, the media presented the Red Scare, and the threat of communist infiltration that would destroy this American way of life. A considerable portion of white, educated, middle-class housewives and mothers content in their role as wives and mothers embraced the prevailing Red Scare and its rhetoric of anti- Communism and the cult of motherhood, which promoted mothers as defenders of morality and the American way of life against the threat of communism. As a result they established grassroots activities within their children’s schools, and communities and exercised a conservative political voice that would ultimately shift the Republican Party from a democratic moderate party to a more fundamentally conservative right wing party that nominated Barry Goldwater for president in 1964 and placed Ronald Reagan as governor of California in 1966, thus making conservatism mainstream.[2] The activism of middle class, suburban housewives after WWII in their role as mothers was not a new phenomenon.

SIGHT AND SOUND UPDATE (No. 77 August/September 2020) MEMBERS’ MUSINGS Of late we are all being encouraged to holiday in Western Aus- tralia. If you are heading from Perth down south, a 317 km trip to Augusta has some unexpected highlights. In 1830 a group of settlers was persuaded by the WA Lieuten- ant -Governor Stirling to settle near Cape Leeuwin, forming the town of Augusta. It is understandable why a lighthouse was built at Cape Leeuwin because the must -see Augusta Museum has many stories, photographs and artefacts relating to ship- wrecks in the area. Members John and Anne Fuhrmann recently visited the muse- um and in one corner stumbled across an informative cinema display. The display included a portable RCA Photophone pro- jector and informative details about the Alan Jones South West cinema circuit and described the significance of film shows to country communities. Photo courtesy of John Fuhrmann TV HISTORY On TVW Channel Seven’s opening night in October 1959 the first sitcom screened was “Leave it to Beaver”. The show was broadcast in America from 1957 to 1963 and was about an inquisitive and often naïve boy, Theodore “The Beaver” Cleaver (portrayed by Jerry Mathers) and his adventures at home, school and around his suburban neighbourhood. The show also starred Barbara Billingsley and Hugh Beaumont as his parents and Tony Dow as Beaver’s brother, Wally. Throughout the show’s run, it was shot with a single camera on black & white 35mm film. Leave it to Beaver ran for six seasons totalling 234 episodes with the first two seasons filmed at the Republic Studios and the final four seasons at Universal Studios.
