Studies in Classicism and Romanticism has come into being as a result of the commitment of a group of scholars who are especially interested in English literature and culture from the mid-seventeenth to the mid- nineteenth century. The Nineteenth Century Apostolic Christian Church: the Emergence, Establishment, and Fragmentation of a Neo- Anabaptist Sect
The Nineteenth Century Apostolic Christian Church: The Emergence, Establishment, and Fragmentation of a Neo- Anabaptist Sect Joseph F. Pfeiffer Doctoral student School of Intercultural Studies Fuller Theological Seminary Abstract This article traces the emergence, proliferation, and identity formation of a 19th century Neo- Anabaptist sect known variously as Neutäufer (New Anabaptists), Nazarenes, and Apostolic Christian Church. The Neutäufer emerged during an era that was a turning point in world religious history, marked by a renewed sense of missionary vigor and the proliferation of major voluntary (as opposed to state-driven) religious movements. These movements radically transformed Western, and even global, Christianity. The article gives detailed attention to the role of Samuel Heinrich Fröhlich in synthesizing evangelical renewalist impulses with traditional Anabaptist convictions. It also follows the tensions that emerged, where agreed upon centrally held traditional Anabaptist values—e.g. non-conformity, plainness, and separation from the world—came to be understood differently as the movement diversified beyond its original context. This article not only contributes to the historical study of the Neutäufer but also contributes to understanding the sociological dynamics of the emergence, establishment, and fragmentation of religious sectarian movements more generally. Rast Jr. Introduction A noted historian of Christianity in the United States assessed the influence of pietism in the following sweeping terms: "There is no area of American life which is free from our pietistic concern; none in which the pietistic attitude is not a significant factor."' Pietism is part of the atmosphere Americans breathe. Believing that style does, in fact, inform substance, it is not too much to say that pietistic practice has significantly formed the theology and practice of American Chri~tianity.~As a distinctly American church, The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod has also been formed in fundamental ways by pietism. -

Erb Professor of Religion and Culture Wilfrid Laurier University ^ Waterloo Although the modern study of Pietism, initiated to a large degree following the Second World War, has done much to elim- inate many misconceptions concerning the movement, much work remains to be done on some critical issues related to that awakening.^ In few places is this more needed than in the case of what has been called “Radical Pietism”. ^ The term itself is a problem, since it is used to describe a wide range of dis- parate religious movements and individuals. Radical Pietism and Early German Methodism: John Seybert and the Evangelical Association
Methodist Histoty, 37:3 (April 1999) RADICAL PIETISM AND EARLY GERMAN METHODISM: JOHN SEYBERT AND THE EVANGELICAL ASSOCIATION SCOTT KISKER Methodism's indebtedness to continental Pietism, though often ne glected, has been fairly well established. Martin .Schmidt has show_n the importance of Pietism to the spiritual development of John Wesley. F. Ernest Stoeffler and W. R. Ward have both located the origins of the 18th century Methodist re-vivals in the Pietist movements which swept continental Protestantism in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Steven ()'Malley has focused scholarly attention on the Pietist roots of the Evangelical United Brethren traditions within United Methodism. Generally these connections are made to Pietism's churchly (and more respectable) forms which ema nated from Halle and Herrnhut during the 17th and 18th centuries. With regard to one source of German-American Methodism (the Evangelic.al Association), the connection is better made to more radical forms-those with sectarian and chiliastic leanings. Martin Schrag, in his essay,"The Impact of Pietism Upon the Mennon ites in Early American Christianity," draws a common distinction between "church-related Pietism" and ''radical Pietism." Church-related Pietists, such as the Spener-Halle movement, worked within the framework of orthodox Protestant theology and established churches. 1 Schrag has argued that both Philip William Otterbein and Martin Boehm fall most neatly into this cate gory of Pietists. ''When Otterbein and Boehm began their work, they had no intention of starting a new denomination. They sought to transform individ uals and thus revitalize the church, not actualize a new church.''2 Radical Pietism, on the other hands has been defined by Chauncy Dayid Ensign as ''That branch of the pietisitic movement in Germany, which empha sized separatistic, sectarian and mystical elements, particularly those origi nating in Boehmenism."3 Most scholars who have studied radical Pietism \ 'Martin H. -
Three Hundred Years of Pietism, Anabaptism, and Pluralism (The
Three Hundred Years of Pietism, Anabaptism, and Pluralism Scott Holland This year [2008] we in the Brethren movement are celebrating 300 years of Pietism, Anabaptism, and Pluralism. Here in Canada there is sometimes confusion about the varieties of Brethren identity, so let me provide the historical context of this anniversary celebration of the Brethren. We are not the Plymouth Brethren or the Brethren in Christ. Canadian Mennonites know we are certainly not the MBs, the Mennonite Brethren! Who are we? We trace our 1708 origins to eight adult baptisms in Schwarzenau, Germany. Inspired by the spiritual leadership of Alexander Mack, this renewal movement blended elements of Anabaptism, learned from Mack’s Mennonite friends and neighbors, with the influences of Radical Pietism that were sweeping across Germany. Two very different but fine resources could be recommended this year for a window into Brethren history. Donald Durnbaugh’s final book, Fruit of the Vine,1 is the standard scholarly source. Myrna Grove has published a children’s book for this year of celebration. Grove’s Alexander Mack: A Man Who Rippled the Waters2 offers a very helpful historical summary of the rise and evolution of Brethrenism. Let me read from Grove’s book to give an indication of how diverse the Schwarzenau Brethren have become in three hundred years: The earliest church members were known as New Baptists, and later, German Baptists and German Baptist Brethren. An Annual Meeting to discuss the beliefs and policies of the church has been held every year since 1742. In 1908, a main branch took the name, Church of the Brethren. -

She screamed out of repen- tance and angst as she realized that, until then, she had lived as a false Christian and a miserable slave of sin. At this moment, the Savior’s words flew like lightning into her soul: she understood that it was God who had created feelings of melan- choly and despair in her body in order to lead her to this moment of conversion. She collapsed on the floor and cried. -
Formative Contexts
chapter 2 Formative Contexts Lewi Pethrus’ ecclesiology is not a systematic, closely defined, rationally con- sistent, chronologically coherent, or even exegetically based, treatment of the church. Rather, Pethrus’ ecclesiology arose in the context of internal and exter- nal turmoil, forged by numerous factors such as historical, social, political, religious, and theological trends of the day. In his study of Pethrus’ preaching, Sune Fahlgren suggests that it finds itself in ‘the intersection between [seven] formative contexts,’ namely ‘Baptism, Nordic Pentecostalism, international Pentecostalism, the Holiness Movement, Biblicism, Apocalypticism, and reli- gious liberalism.’1 Healy observes, however, that defining the ecclesiological context is a ‘highly complex’ task that ‘includes many church elements, such as […]: the church’s history, both local and worldwide; the background beliefs and the economic and social status of its members; recent developments among its leadership; styles of argumentation in theology […]; styles of wor- ship, and the like.’2 Despite this important caveat regarding the complexity of the task, Fahlgren provides a helpful framework for gaining an overview of the formative contexts that shaped Pethrus’ ecclesiology. However, since the intent here is to assess the formative contexts that particularly shaped Pethrus’ eccle- siology and not his theology or life as a whole, the chapter will centre on six personal and historical contexts that are especially noticeable in his ecclesio- logical writings, namely ecclesiological traditions, restorationism, Pentecostalism, pragmatism, individualism/experientialism, and dispensationalism because of their prominence in Pethrus’ ecclesiology. The discussion will be purpose- fully broad in order to ensure a good overview. Specific political and social influences will be highlighted in the contextual narratives.
