VISIONS OF LOVE: SIMEON SOLOMON AND THE HYPNEROTOMACHIA POLIPHILI D.M.R. Bentley When Simeon Solomon met his “idol” Dante Gabriel Rossetti “early in 1858” and began working in Rossetti’s studio (Reynolds 7), he entered an artistic circle whose influence on his work was marked enough for it to be considered Pre-Raphaelite. Prior to meeting Rossetti, Solomon had made only a few drawings that show the influence of Pre-Raphaelitism, most notably Faust and Marguerite (1856) and Eight Scenes from the Story of David and Jonathan (1856), but he would soon become in all things Pre-Raphaelite. 1 Love (1858) and The Death of Sir Galahad While Taking a Portion of the Holy Grail Administered by Joseph of Arimathea (1857-59) are Pre- Raphaelite in manner and subject-matter, while Nathan Reproving Daniel (1859), Babylon Hath Been a Golden Cup (1859), Erinna Taken from Sappho (1865), The Bride, Bridegroom and Sad Love (1865), and other works of the late 1850s and early 1860s are Pre-Raphaelite in manner but bespeak, by turns, Solomon’s Jewish heritage and his increasingly forthright homo- sexuality . Portrait of Edward Burne-Jones (1859) is an idealized portrait of the artist as a clear-eyed visionary, and Dante’s First Meeting with Beatrice (1859-63) is an homage to Rossetti that is so extreme in its imitativeness as to verge on parody. But did Solomon’s admiration of Rossetti and Burne- Jones include knowledge of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (1499), the book that was arguably as important to the “New Renaissance ” phase (Allingham 140) of Pre-Raphaelitism as was the Morte D’Arthur to its Oxford phase – and, moreover, identified by Rossetti as “the old Italian book .. -

Fantasied images of women: representations of myths of the golden apples in “classic” Victorian Paintings This article proposes to examine the treatment of Greek myths of the golden apples in paintings by late-Victorian artists then categorized in contemporary reception as “classical” or “classic.” These terms recur in many reviews published in periodicals.1 The artists concerned were trained in the academic and neoclassical Continental tradition, and they turned to Antiquity for their forms and subjects. -

It sheds light on the role of twelve female models, muses, wives, poets, and artists active within the Pre- Raphaelite circle, which is revealed as much less of an exclusive “boys’ club.” The aim of the exhibition was to “redress the balance in showing just how engaged and central women were to the endeavor, as the subjects of the images themselves, but also in their production,” as stated on the back cover of the catalogue accompanying the exhibition. Although there have been previous exhibitions on the female artists associated with the movement, such as in Pre-Raphaelite Women Artists (Manchester City Art Galleries, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Southampton City Art Gallery, 1997–98), the broader scope of this exhibition counts models and relatives among the significant players within art production and distribution. -

PRESS RELEASE 5 February 2021 for immediate release: PRE-RAPHAELITES: DRAWINGS AND WATERCOLOURS Opening Spring 2021, (dates to be announced) Following the dramatic events of 2020 and significant re-scheduling of exhibition programmes, the Ashmolean is delighted to announce a new exhibition for spring 2021: Pre-Raphaelites: Drawings and Watercolours. With international loans prevented by safety and travel restrictions, the Ashmolean is hugely privileged to be able to draw on its superlative permanent collections. Few people have examined the large number of Pre-Raphaelite works on paper held in the Western Art Print Room. Even enthusiasts and scholars have rarely looked at more than a selection. This exhibition makes it possible to see a wide range of these fragile works together for the first time. They offer an intimate and rare glimpse into the world of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the artists associated with the movement. The exhibition includes works of extraordinary beauty, from the portraits they made of each other, studies for paintings and commissions, to subjects taken from history, literature and landscape. Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882) In 1848 seven young artists, including John Everett Millais, William The Day Dream, 1872–8 Holman Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, resolved to rebel against the Pastel and black chalk on tinted paper, 104.8 academic teaching of the Royal Academy of Arts. They proposed a × 76.8 cm Ashmolean Museum. University of Oxford new mode of working, forward-looking despite the movement’s name, which would depart from the ‘mannered’ style of artists who came after Raphael. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) set out to paint with originality and authenticity by studying nature, celebrating their friends and heroes and taking inspiration from the art and poetry about which they were passionate. -
Heavenly Priesthood in the Apocalypse of Abraham
HEAVENLY PRIESTHOOD IN THE APOCALYPSE OF ABRAHAM The Apocalypse of Abraham is a vital source for understanding both Jewish apocalypticism and mysticism. Written anonymously soon after the destruction of the Second Jerusalem Temple, the text envisions heaven as the true place of worship and depicts Abraham as an initiate of the celestial priesthood. Andrei A. Orlov focuses on the central rite of the Abraham story – the scapegoat ritual that receives a striking eschatological reinterpretation in the text. He demonstrates that the development of the sacerdotal traditions in the Apocalypse of Abraham, along with a cluster of Jewish mystical motifs, represents an important transition from Jewish apocalypticism to the symbols of early Jewish mysticism. In this way, Orlov offers unique insight into the complex world of the Jewish sacerdotal debates in the early centuries of the Common Era. The book will be of interest to scholars of early Judaism and Christianity, Old Testament studies, and Jewish mysticism and magic. ANDREI A. The influence of Japanese art is a phenomenon that is now called Japonisme , and it spread widely throughout Western art. It is quite hard to make a clear definition of Japonisme because of the breadth of the phenomenon, but it could be generally agreed that it is an attempt to understand and adapt the essential qualities of Japanese art. This thesis explores Japanese influences on British Art and will focus on four artists working in Britain: the American James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), the Australian Mortimer Menpes (1855-1938), and two artists from the group known as the Glasgow Boys, George Henry (1858-1934) and Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933). -

It is a story with many implications for the way Jews view women’s bodies, intermarriage with Gentiles, pride, and zealous violence. The fate of Dinah was used to justify an absolute ban on intermarriage in the Second Temple Period, and is being used by feminists today to reclaim women’s voices in the Bible. -

FROM SHAKESPEAREAN HEROINE TO PRE-RAPHAELITE MUSE DANA PERCEC West University of Timișoara [email protected] Abstract: The paper aims to make a connection between the female models of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the portrayal of Shakespearean heroines, given that the 19th-century school of painting was using the Bard not only as a source of legitimation and authority, but also as a source of displacement, tackling apparently universal and literary subjects that were in fact disturbing for the Victorian sensibilities, such as love and eroticism, neurosis and madness, or suicide. As more recent scholarship has revealed, the women behind the Brotherhood, while posing as passive and contemplative, objects on display for the public gaze, had more agency and mobility than the average Victorian women. Keywords: Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, female models, Victorian sensibilities, Shakespearean heroines, sisterhood. 1. Introduction The Pre-Raphaelite movement has received a lot of critical attention both in artistic terms and in terms of the literary sources of inspiration this school of painting used. The founders, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, and William Holman Hunt were members of the same generation of young imaginative artists, but even half a century after the first PRB exhibition in 1848, a late Pre-Raphaelite like John William Waterhouse had the same technical and aesthetic approach. Escapist and nostalgic, the Pre-Raphaelite painting favours medieval settings, Biblical or mythological themes, lavish costumes and vivid colours. Above all, it brings to the forefront the female subject: beautiful young women in a melancholy pose, enigmatic and inactive, statuesque and aloof.
