GEORGE RAPFS HARMONISTS AND THE BEGINNINGS OF NORWEGIAN MIGRATION TO AMERICA Karl J. R. Arndt before George Rapp's Harmonists moved from Harmony in EvenButler County, Pennsylvania, through the great Pittsburgh gateway to establish their second settlement, New Harmony, on the Wabash, they had become internationally famous as highly successful American pioneer builders in the wilderness, but their well-arranged move down the Ohio to the Wabash increased their prestige as models of group migration. With a justified pride in their brilliant transpor- tation of an entire community of 800 people withcattle, sheep, horses, feathered flocks, swine, flora and fauna, building supplies, machinery of various kinds including a steam engine, seeds for future harvests, beer, wine, food supplies, tools, raiment, and medicines over such a distance, Frederick Rapp on March 28, 1816, wrote his Pittsburgh agent George Sutton: "Ican inform you with much pleasure, that we all arrived here in good State of health, and landed our property Safe, which we brought with us from there, so that nothing has happened to none of our Boats of which there was above thirty." Thousands of individuals had passed through Pittsburgh on their way west, but the Harmonist migration was the greatest group achievement of that time and has never been properly recognized in the history of Western Pennsylvania. The Harmonist move was the transportation of an entire civilization from the east to the primeval forests of the west, and for that reason in the west and in Europe the new settlement soon became known as "Harmonie, that Wonder of the West." Frederick Rapp and all the Harmonists were fully aware of what they were accomplishing and therefore took great pride in their unique community, so much so that they wrote enthusiastic letters to friends and relatives in old Wurttemberg inviting them to come and join them in the wide open spaces of the glorious west. -

Such voices from the mar- gins often set the agenda at crucial moments, prompting both the dissenters and establishment to engage in a debate to define proper theology and practice. Once a dissenting group has formally sepa- rated from a parent body, there is a risk that teleological hindsight will obscure the nature of these conversations, including the reasons for the ultimate separation and the intentions of both the dissenters and the establishment. -

The historical coordinates We give the name “pietism” to a phenomenon in church life which certainly has a particular historical and “confessional” starting point, but also has much wider ramifications in the spiritual life of all the Christian Churches. Pietism made its appearance as a distinct historical movement within Protestantism, at the end of the seventeenth and beginning of the eighteenth centuries, around 1690-1730.1 Its aim was to stress “practical piety,” as distinct from the polemical dogmatic theology to which the Reformation had initially given a certain priority.2 Against the intellectualist 120 1 There is a rich bibliography on pietism, chiefly in the form of monographs dealing with the numerous local pietistic movements and the personalities of their leaders. The Nineteenth Century Apostolic Christian Church: The Emergence, Establishment, and Fragmentation of a Neo- Anabaptist Sect Joseph F. Pfeiffer Doctoral student School of Intercultural Studies Fuller Theological Seminary Abstract This article traces the emergence, proliferation, and identity formation of a 19th century Neo- Anabaptist sect known variously as Neutäufer (New Anabaptists), Nazarenes, and Apostolic Christian Church. The Neutäufer emerged during an era that was a turning point in world religious history, marked by a renewed sense of missionary vigor and the proliferation of major voluntary (as opposed to state-driven) religious movements. These movements radically transformed Western, and even global, Christianity. The article gives detailed attention to the role of Samuel Heinrich Fröhlich in synthesizing evangelical renewalist impulses with traditional Anabaptist convictions. It also follows the tensions that emerged, where agreed upon centrally held traditional Anabaptist values—e.g. non-conformity, plainness, and separation from the world—came to be understood differently as the movement diversified beyond its original context. This article not only contributes to the historical study of the Neutäufer but also contributes to understanding the sociological dynamics of the emergence, establishment, and fragmentation of religious sectarian movements more generally. By the early seventeenth-century, a widespread dissatisfaction can be discerned among many awakened Protestants at the suppression of the monastic life and a new interest in reintroducing ascetic practices like celibacy, poverty, and solitary withdrawal to Protestant devotion. The introduction and chapter one explain how the absence of monasticism as an institutionally sanctioned means to express intensified holiness posed a problem to many Protestants. Large numbers of dissenters fled the mainstream Protestant religions—along with what they viewed as an increasingly materialistic, urbanized world—to seek new ways to experience God through lives of seclusion and ascetic self-deprival. In the following chapters, I show how this ascetic impulse drove the formation of new religious communities, transatlantic migration, and gave birth to new attitudes and practices toward sexuality and gender among Protestants. The study consists of four case studies, each examining a different non-conformist community that experimented with ascetic ritual and monasticism. -
