Harmony. The tower clock struck eight, a pleuing indi­ cation of civilization for a traveler who has passed over eight hundred miles w1 thout having heard the stroke ot a clock. When I arrived in the town 1 t seemed as it I were in the midst of Germany. Clothing, language, manners and cus­ toms, all ~ave ranained unchanged w1 th these colonists. Thia comr.1un1 ty w1 th German cu stoma and tradi tiona as described by a traveler in 1819 was the home of the Harmony Society whieh resided 1n Harmony, Indiana from 1815 to 1825. Th.is Society waa not an ordinary community. Here under frontier conditions stood a settlement noted for its clean and orderly appearance, durable frame and brick buildings, well kept gardens, !'ert1le fields of' grain and fruit, many and varied industries, and strong religious principles. 1h!a unique German colony was achieved through communi tartan errort and became one of the most proaperou a communitarian aocietiea 1n the United States. The members or the Society under the leadership or George Rapp emigrated from Germany and .first settled in Pennsylvania i'rom 1804 to 1815. It waa 1n Pennsylvania that the .followers of George Rapp organized the Harmony Society. When the Society wa.s 1'01"'1\led• private ownership of property we.a renounced and the wealth of the members became the weal th of the Society. This communal 11ving was grounded on religious principles and the tenets and teachings of George Rn.pp. Ra.pp's theology which attracted over seven hundred .followers did not originate in America but evolved .t'rom religious condi tiona in Germany prior to their immigration to America. Ono naturally becomes curious as to the environment and background of this man George Ra9p who became a religious leader or men who were willing to leave their homeland, give up their property and become obedient to his dictates. George Rapp, a six f'oot German with Nordic features, waa born in Iptingen, Wurtemberg, on Octobu 26, 1757.2 His parents were Hens Adam and Rosina Rapp. George Rapp had a simple upbringing end a common school education of reading, writing, arithmetic and geography. In his early life George Rapp became religiously inclined and a devoted student of the Bible. In Wurtemberg and other ptlI't& of Germany in the sev­ enteenta and eighteenth centuries there occurred a great deal. of' religious turmoil. Tb.ere arose a movement called pietism which desired to rei'orm the Lutheran church. The object! ve of pietism was to preserve the doctrinal content of Martin Luther's theology. However, the pietists felt the systanatic theology and philosophy of the Lutheran church should be secondary to a more vital religion of the heart and life. The pietists opposed the laxity of' morale that was existing in Germany at that time. The universities of Germany had become bot-beds of vice and in.f1del1 ty. The professors did not atreas the c:llff'erencea between the philoaophic ideas or Pythagoras, Plato, Homer, Aristotle, and Socrates and the religious teachings of Moses and the Biblical prophets. "The h1ator1c records of the Old Testament were but myths, and the miracles ot the New Testament were but exaggerated statanents of natural :racts."3 On the Sabbath, balls, theaters, and gambling were unchecked by the church. From the church pulpi ta "the peasantry received i'requent and labored instruction on the raising o~ bees, cattle, and fruit."4 Pietism stressed the need £or active reform to a 11£e of devotion, repentance, and spiritual conversion. Worship 1n the Lutheran church J:lad become a cold formality o:f abstruse logic in expounding the gospel. P• 10. 4Aaron Williams, Th.e Harmony Soc1,et,:, p. 11. -4- ideas of pietism with the exception that he wanted to break away f'rom the Lutheran church; in other words, he became a separatist. The dec1a1on of Rapp not to adh8l'e to the Lutheran church was ini'luenced in part by the writings ot Spener, Bohme, Swedenborg, Jung-Stilling, Herder., and Bengel. The pietist movanent originated primarily through the efforts ot Philipp Jakob Spener ( 163.5-170.$) • Span.er was not interested in breaking away from the establish- ed church, the Lutheran church, but only in reforming 1 t. In an effort to study the Bible to gain a more sincere end consistent religious experience, Spener organized private religious meetings outside the realm or the state church. These meetinga were started as early as 1680 and were called collegia pietatis. The term p1et1stp was derived from the people who attended these religious meetings. Other leaders of the pietist movment were Jakob Bohme:> (1743.1819), Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772), Jung.. Stilling6 {1740-1817), Johann Gottfried von Herder {1744.i803). In Wurtemberg, Johann AJ.brecht Bengel (1687-1752) waa the leader of the pietieta. Jakob Bohme believed in religious mysticism which was a desire for an intimate communion with God. H1ator1cally, religious mysticism, Bohme said, i'l'equ ently came into being as a .5Bobme is also spelled Bohn or Bebmen. 6Jung.Stilling is a pseudonym for Johann Heinrich Jung. -5- proteat against mechanica1 and/or anthropomorphic repre- sentation of God in his relations to man and the world.

Arndt before George Rapp's Harmonists moved from Harmony in EvenButler County, Pennsylvania, through the great Pittsburgh gateway to establish their second settlement, New Harmony, on the Wabash, they had become internationally famous as highly successful American pioneer builders in the wilderness, but their well-arranged move down the Ohio to the Wabash increased their prestige as models of group migration. With a justified pride in their brilliant transpor- tation of an entire community of 800 people withcattle, sheep, horses, feathered flocks, swine, flora and fauna, building supplies, machinery of various kinds including a steam engine, seeds for future harvests, beer, wine, food supplies, tools, raiment, and medicines over such a distance, Frederick Rapp on March 28, 1816, wrote his Pittsburgh agent George Sutton: "Ican inform you with much pleasure, that we all arrived here in good State of health, and landed our property Safe, which we brought with us from there, so that nothing has happened to none of our Boats of which there was above thirty." Thousands of individuals had passed through Pittsburgh on their way west, but the Harmonist migration was the greatest group achievement of that time and has never been properly recognized in the history of Western Pennsylvania. The Harmonist move was the transportation of an entire civilization from the east to the primeval forests of the west, and for that reason in the west and in Europe the new settlement soon became known as "Harmonie, that Wonder of the West." Frederick Rapp and all the Harmonists were fully aware of what they were accomplishing and therefore took great pride in their unique community, so much so that they wrote enthusiastic letters to friends and relatives in old Wurttemberg inviting them to come and join them in the wide open spaces of the glorious west.

Grow Institutional Context: Founded in 1965, the University of Southern Indiana is a regional, teaching-focused public institution, with a student body of 10,500. Students overwhelmingly come from southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and northern Kentucky; a third of students are first-generation to attend college in their family. USI’s campus in Evansville is roughly 25 miles from the town of New Harmony, Indiana, the site of two early-nineteenth-century communal utopias, one founded by a German millennialist group, the Harmonists, and the other founded by social reformer Robert Owen. Over the past fifty years, the town has been restored; Historic New Harmony is jointly administered by the university and by the state of Indiana. The university library’s Special Collections has one of the best manuscript and book collections on communal groups anywhere, with information on over 700 separate communities. In addition, the university has a Center for Communal Studies (which I direct), which promotes the study of historic and contemporary communal groups, utopias, and intentional communities. As such, the History Department has long offered a course in Communal Utopias in America. Course Rationale and Strategy: In this course, I raise several questions about communal groups and new religious movements and the cultural reactions to them. What have been the attractions of these groups? How have these groups challenged American society? How have they evolved over time? How do reactions to them reveal larger cultural values, including attitudes on gender, race, and religion? I have structured the course chronologically.

These sects developed most frequently in those regions where Lutheranism and Catholicism battled for religious supremacy. Lack of doctrinal unanimity in the borderland of organized religion extending from Moravia to the North Sea encouraged speculation and experimentation. 1 The primary desire of the Pietists was simply to study the Bible and to follow its teachings. In order to achieve this end they usually congregated in small groups in the homes of the members and, adopting the pattern of the early Christians, estab- lished common treasuries.     The Indiana Decade of George Rapfjs Harmony Society: 1814-1824 KARL JOHN RICHARD ARNDT WHEN George Rapp died in 1847, the capitalistic press of Pittsburgh lauded him as 'The greatest communist ofthe age.' This was the year that Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels were commissioned to write the Communist Manifesto. At the time of his death, Rapp could look back upon three American com- munist towns which his Society had built and which had at- tracted the admiration of all the Western World, for George Rapp was the founder ofthe most successful of all American communist groups in our history, which provided social and spiritual security with prenatal care and post-mortem burial over a century before the New Deal. Before Alcott's Fruit- lands (1843) and Brook Farm (l84l) began, Rapp's Harmony Society had been flourishing for almost forty years, and the enormous success of the Society actually inspired both, for Rapp's Society was not just another German-American musi- cal society, but a solid communist (small c!) establishment that endured in our country for a full century. To Karl Marx and his followers religion was the opium ofthe people, to Rapp it was the essence of life, yet one looks in vain in American high school or college textbooks for an account of this lost horizon. Karl Marx is taught, but our own greatest communist is completely unknown to our textbook makers. To correct this false slant and 300 American Antiquarian Society to fill a glaring gap in American history I propose to publish a Documentary History Of George Rapp's Harmony Society in six volumes covering its history from the time of its beginnings in Württemberg in 1785 to its legal conclusion in 1916, In the present paper, however, I shall limit myself in the main to a survey of the second volume of this Documentary History, which will cover the period which the Society spent in Indiana, but before entering upon this second decade of its life in the United States, I must concern myself with the religious back- grounds of Württemberg at the time the Society came into being.

Martin .Schmidt has show_n the importance of Pietism to the spiritual development of John Wesley. F. Ernest Stoeffler and W. R. Ward have both located the origins of the 18th century Methodist re-vivals in the Pietist movements which swept continental Protestantism in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Steven ()'Malley has focused scholarly attention on the Pietist roots of the Evangelical United Brethren traditions within United Methodism. Generally these connections are made to Pietism's churchly (and more respectable) forms which ema­ nated from Halle and Herrnhut during the 17th and 18th centuries. With regard to one source of German-American Methodism (the Evangelic.al Association), the connection is better made to more radical forms-those with sectarian and chiliastic leanings. Martin Schrag, in his essay,"The Impact of Pietism Upon the Mennon­ ites in Early American Christianity," draws a common distinction between "church-related Pietism" and ''radical Pietism." Church-related Pietists, such as the Spener-Halle movement, worked within the framework of orthodox Protestant theology and established churches. 1 Schrag has argued that both Philip William Otterbein and Martin Boehm fall most neatly into this cate­ gory of Pietists. ''When Otterbein and Boehm began their work, they had no intention of starting a new denomination. They sought to transform individ­ uals and thus revitalize the church, not actualize a new church.''2 Radical Pietism, on the other hands has been defined by Chauncy Dayid Ensign as ''That branch of the pietisitic movement in Germany, which empha­ sized separatistic, sectarian and mystical elements, particularly those origi­ nating in Boehmenism."3 Most scholars who have studied radical Pietism \ 'Martin H.

    A. Historic Preservation Project: The Silk House Cafe The community has supported (within the last three years) a historic or cultural preservation project that promotes heritage tourism or otherwise fosters economic vitality. The project must have involved a public-private partnership between government entities and at least one civic association, non-profit organization, or business enterprise. The rehabilitation of The Silk House Café involved a public- private partnership between the Community Development Program of Beaver County and a local Ambridge businesswoman. Located within the Ambridge Historic District, a National Historic Landmark, and just blocks from Old Economy Village, the former silk manufacturing building built in 1826 played a major role in the Harmony Society's famous silk industry. The project was the initiative of owner Cindy Ridge, who recognized that the revitalization of historic properties would help promote heritage tourism and foster economic development within the Ambridge Historic District. Purchasing the building for a mere $15,000, and with the exterior, roof, and interior desperately in need of renovations, Cindy partnered with the Community Development Program (CDP) of Beaver County to obtain a $40,000 Facade Improvement Grant and personally provided $34,000 for the exterior work and funded the extensive interior rehabilitation. Working closely with the CDP representatives and the Ambridge Historic Architectural Review Board, she obtained approval for the final exterior design in accordance with the Design Guidelines for the local historic district. After several months of renovations, The Silk House Café opened its doors to Ambridge on August 27, 2005. A stronger sense of community pride and support is evident as The Silk House Café has informally become the gathering place for townspeople.

    TRANSFORMATIVE MODES OF CHINESE COSMOPOLITANISM: A HISTORICAL COMPARISON John Zijiang Ding Abstract: Chinese traditional thinkers attempt to examine cosmopolitanism through metaphysical, ethical, aesthetical, and utopian imagination. They transform the examination of cosmopolitanism from the geographical to ethical-political. The conceptualization of Chinese cosmopolitanism has had four dimensions: 1) the concept of the supernatural being and superhuman being through certain ontological and cosmological imagination; 2) the concept of the natural being through the geographical environment; 3) the concept of the human being through the centralized ruler ship to govern the entire society and all lands; and 4) the concept of the moral virtue,ethical valueand utopian idea through self realization, self perfection, self purification and self transformation. This article will justify seven transformative modes of Chinese cosmopolitanism through a philosophical comparison. COSMOPOLITANISM EXAMINES the relations among nations, groups, or individuals, and how they can be morally, culturally, economically and politically unified as a global community. Through the cosmopolitan approach, we verify and justify the relationship between global justice and universal justice, finally leading to the concept of universalism. Universalism may not be as implausible as some contemporary philosophers believe. The real world seems to call for universalism such as universal justice, and universal values. If we should go back the ideal of universalism, we then face questions of cultural-linguistic translatability. Global justice, cosmopolitanism and universalism should be regarded as Three-in-One or Threefold Truth as they are inter-related, inter-acted, and inter-transformed. This article will examine the transformative modes of Chinese cosmopolitanism through a historical comparison. I.
