Media Wars in Brazil
Media wars in Brazil blogs.lse.ac.uk/polis/2016/08/12/media-wars-in-brazil/ 2016-8-12 This article is by LSE MSc student André Lobato and is based on a presentation he gave at the event ‘Brazil, What’s Next? From the turmoil to the near future: challenges for democracy, economy, culture and human rights in Brazil’ on 20/07/2016. This is an image of Karl Marx wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses with a Marshall McLuhan sentence that urges us to pay attention to the medium and its effects. Marx himself called on the proletariat of the world to take control of the mediums of production. Media mediates between us and much of our reality. It can be considered an environment, we see, hear, speak and get in touch with media. We experience a mass-media mediated world. Would it be possible for the nation state to exist today without newspapers radio or television, roads, airports and other forms of communication? If holding power depends on the control of communication, transformations in communication can change power structures. Democracy, as we know it today, is, in some way, an invention of the print era: Constitutions are paper politics, paper made to last. Many argue that in this age – when electricity affords an unprecedented global connectivity – ordinary people have taken control of the medium of media production without ever owning it entirely. You buy a cellphone, but Facebook is free. The total-connectivity of the electric medium will then facilitate the emergence of marginalized groups as political actors. They can no longer be contained, in the political sense of limited association (McLuhan). -

Abstract In this paper, we analyze how mobile digital technologies have been influencing the international narratives presented at GloboNews (Rede Globo’s 24-hour news channel) TV news programmes. With the theoretical support of Alfredo Vizeu (2016), Antonio Fausto Neto (2006; 2007; 2008), Dominique Maingueneau (2008), Ekkehard Eggs (2008), Fabiana Piccinin (2014), José Luiz Fiorin (2004) e Yvana Fechine (2008), we observe how the unveiling of the world takes place by the channel’s correspondents, with the use of certain discursive strategies, among them self-referentiality, for the construction of an ethos of these professionals. We noticed that the experience of journalism has been incorporated into the reporting as the news itself. Keywords: Mobile digital technologies. Discursive strategies. Ethos construction. -

The Wilson Center honors the memory of Woodrow Wilson by bridging his two pas- sions — scholarship and policy. At the center, we bring together the thinkers and do- ers — policymakers, scholars and business leaders — in the hope that a frank and open dialogue will lead to better understanding, cooperation and public policy. During my two decades as a Member of Congress, I traveled several times to Brazil to examine shared interests between our two countries like energy security, climate change and international security cooperation. The Brazil Institute provides a sophisticated understanding of these issues, and the prospects of the bilateral relationship on the eve of President Obama’s trip to Brasilia and Rio was the topic of the first discussion I attended, the day before becoming President here. -
Feasibility Study on Transport of Iron Ore Using the Paraguay-Paraná River System
Feasibility Study On Transport of Iron Ore Using The Paraguay-Paraná River System Multidisciplinary Project - CIE4061-096 January 2017 Pieter de Wet 4155424 Louise Remmelts 4158946 Féline Mollerus 4231295 Bram ter Meulen 4255054 Preface As a part of the master programme of TU Delft, students have the opportunity to do a Multidisciplinary Project. During such a project a group of students integrate multiple studies and skill sets developed in prior years into one comprehensible research. We, Pieter de Wet (Offshore Engineering), Bram ter Meulen (Sustainable Energy Technology), Louise Remmelts (Architecture and premaster Transport Infrastructure and Logistics) and Féline Mollerus (Biomedical Engineering), took this opportunity and organized a Multidisciplinary Research Study in cooperation with the faculty of Port Engineering of the University of Buenos Aires, which has an agreement with the TU Delft to facilitate such projects. We would do an investigation on the feasibility of exploiting iron ore deposits far inland in Bolivia and Brazil. Before the project started not everyone in our group knew each other very well but we had one thing in common, our international ambition. The reason we started an international multidisciplinary project was because we all were excited to have an international experience to broaden our horizon. We were all very excited about Buenos Aires and the project description was very interesting as well. We would like to thank the people who have helped us uring our project. Firstly we would like to thank Henk-Jan Verhagen, who helped us finding the project and getting in touch with the people from Hidrovia S.A. and the University of Buenos Aires. -
