Well a wet month for events! The Cambrian was very lucky running just before Storm Ciara hit North Wales. Sadly the organisers of Riponian had taken the correct decision on the weather advice and cancelled the event just 3 days before running. More event organisers will need to look carefully at insurance and their event costing, many events and clubs are running at breakeven and do not have a reserve to cover this type of hit.

The following weekend in the North West area, two training events took place during storm Dennis. I am sure all that attended these had a great weekend. Whilst also being VERY damp...One of the major safety items to get across to those who attended, was the safe use of gazebos at motorsport events. Many event organisers use them but inci- dents have happened, with a little thought they can be used safely even in a storm..

SD34 motorsport group and the regions are currently open to championship registrations. The benefits of both SD34 and ANWCC championships working together for the competitors is clear to see, competitors have two champion- ships for the one event; in these times of looking after the pennies, motor clubs need to attract their customers. Garstang and Preston MSC and Clitheroe DMC lead the way with both clubs having 15 members registered for the championships well done and many thanks for your proactive support. The Under 17 MC has 11, Warrington DMC has 8, Bolton Le Moors CC has 8 registered once again being active in the promotion of the championships to their members. Six clubs have only one registered competitor. 10 clubs have no registered competitors; half of these clubs run stage rally events and have several drivers out on many NW events all who run events will need marshals. I am sure a £5 fee is not putting these competitors off registering when a set of tyres will be £400 to £800.... Question to SD34 Club representatives why? I look forward to the meeting on the 18th March, please attend if you can and help shape SD34 Motor Sport Group. Steve Johnson, Chairman , SD34MSG Comprising the following 11 Clubs

Therefore by signing the above Championship Registration form you give your full consent and authority for SD34MSG to con- tact you via email, telephone and/or letter for the purpose of keeping you informed with activities, events and for social purposes so long as I you are a registered Championship contender. You also understand that you may withdraw your consent at any time by contacting the Groups Data Protection Officer, who is the SD34 MSG Secretary ([email protected]), and is also the data controller for the purpose of GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. The SD34 MSG GDPR Privacy Statement can be viewed on the Groups Web Site. @ http:// sd34msg.org.uk/ Please return the completed form to the championship compiler. This can be done by post or by completing the form, print off, sign, scan and then e-mail to championship compiler. Address information at bottom of page. SD34MSG Under 18 Championship Regulations The SD34MSG “Under 18 Championship” shall allow any member of an SD34MSG club, who is under the age of 18 on the first day in the championship year (this will normally be 1st January in any year) to compete for the championship in any discipline of motorsport which allows their participation at an age of under 18 as defined in the current Motorsport UK Bluebook. As this will be a multi discipline championship then all Under 18 Championship qualifying competitors wishing to be considered for the championship must register for the Under 18 Championship separately to the normal champion-ships. This will not exclude them from registering for the normal SD34MSG championship as well. (Entry to this championship shall be free and points will be awarded from the date of first registration.) Scoring For championships which work out overall positions by Index of Performance (as per the SD34MSG Index of Performance system and rules) the Under 18 registered competitor with the best index in the event will be awarded one point for each under 18 championship contender, or 10 points whichever is the higher, and second placed one point less, etc. i.e The 2nd best index 1 point less, 3rd best index 2 points less and so on till all eligible registered Under 18 competitors have been awarded their points. For Championship events which work out overall position by means of the least actual time lost (or time and fails system) then the Registered Under 18 competitor with the best overall position will be awarded one point for each under 18 championship contender, or 10 points whichev- er is the higher, and second placed one point less, etc. i.e The 2nd best overall position 1 point less, 3rd best overall position 2 points less and so on till all eligible registered Under 18 competitors have been awarded their points. Some championship events may well have eligible competitors in both the driving and navigating positions and therefore I would envisage that points be awarded to both Drivers and Navigators separately according to their overall position either as navigators or drivers. There will be no distinction between drivers or navigators for the overall awards. Registered competitors may also score 5 points on two separate occasions by marshalling on any SD34MSG championship event. One of these must be for marshalling on an SD34 Championship event other than one run by their own club. If the event is run/co-promoted by more than one club and one of these clubs is their own club this will not count as another club for marshalling points. You must claim these points directly with the championship compiler within 1 (one) month of the event taking place stating which event you marshalled on. The REGISTERED Under 18 competitor with the highest score at the end of the championship year, from any discipline or multiple disciplines, would be the Overall Under 18 Champion. Next highest score 2nd Overall and third highest score 3rd Overall. It must be stressed that an Un- der 18 Championship contender must notify the Championship compiler of their taking part in a particular eligible event within 1 (one) month of the event taking place. (This can be easily done by e-mail just stating which event and its date.) The event organisers must supply a complete set of results and entry list with clubs entered under to the Under 18 compiler so that points can be awarded accordingly. These must be notified as soon as the results become available and no longer than three weeks after the date that the results become official. Please note all our (SD34MSG) Competitions are “Held under the General Regulations of Motorsport UK (incorporating the provisions of the International Sporting Code of the FIA) and any supplementary Regulations. They are currently moving venues around Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre in a bid to take the club to a wider audience. For details of future meeting venues please email [email protected] With most focussed on the forthcoming Legend Fires North West Stages few South Shore members have been in rally action during the first two months of the year. As always though there’s an exception and in this instance it’s Callum Cross who has been flying the club flag on MSN Circuit Rally Championship events. Co-driving Paul Murro in his Ford Escort Mk2 the pair’s most recent outing was on the Snetterton Stages where the changing weather conditions made for some chal- lenging tyre choices. Having selected wets for stage five it turned dry then having chosen slicks for the stage six the rain descended, it was that sort of day! Despite that they maintained a top ten place going into the final stage in ninth place. Sadly an altercation with a bale and then being baulked by a slower car saw them slip to tenth but with rounds at Anglesey and Donington to come their championship challenge isn’t over! Away from rallying other South Shore members have been in the news this past fortnight for more diverse rea- sons. For starters, have you heard the one about the South Shore member selling sand to Turkmenistan, a country roughly the size of Spain with 80% of it made up of de- sert? No, this isn’t a joke! Simon Bowen flogged them 10,000 tonnes of the stuff claiming “Theirs is the wrong texture and the wrong shape.” Search ‘Bowen sand’ on the BBC News website if you’re not convinced. And those watching Mike Brewer’s new series, Wheeler Dealers: Dream Cars, on the Discovery Channel, will no doubt have spotted another South Shore member putting his salesman skills to best effect. In episode seven of the new series Paul Megretton persuaded the aforesaid Mr Brewer to part with some of his ‘hard earned’ in ex- change for an old Legend Fires Motorsport Mercedes service barge. Paul gave it his best sales pitch telling Mike “It’s towed the rally car all over the place.” It all goes to show that if it’s fame and fortune you want then you should become a member of Blackpool South Shore Motor Club. Anyhow, in next month’s ‘A view from the Shore’ I’m go- ing to concentrate on rally related news. The story about the South Shore member selling snow to the Eskimos will just have to wait a little longer! 2019 Awards Night Knutsford Friday 21st of February 2020 District Motor Club Meet on the second Monday of each Month at : The Kilton Inn Warrington Road, Mere, Knutsford WA16 0PZ www.knutsfordmotorclub.co.uk SCATTER 202 Monday 2nd March, Royal Abbey Arms, Delamere Cold enough to Freeze the Balls off a Brass Monkey! An Evening with Mike Wood Thursday 12th March Whalley Golf Club Mike Wood competed on several Monte Carlo Rallies in the works Mini Coopers and actually took part in 9 Monte Carlo Rallies in several different makes and models of car. The “Monte” was one of Mike’s favourite rallies and be- tween 1958 through to 1973 he accompanied a number of drivers on this iconic event. Of the nine rallies he en- tered he qualified as a finisher 7 times with his best re- sult being 4th overall in 1968. All en- his award for 3rd trants receive a Route Book giving full directions along in the Sprint Series with a Rally plate Nick Townley : Kirkby Lonsdale MC It seemed a good idea at the time, when I said wouldn’t mind having a go at running a fully blown road rally. As it turned out, it was a real baptism of fire or should I say water. On what turned out to be the worst storm since Storm Desmond, we managed to run half the rally before common sense prevailed and we admitted defeat to the elements. Right from the start I thought we should run the event further north as a change from the usual 97, 98, 102 & 103 fare, which meant straying into Eden Valley MC terri- tory. So, I met with Paul Shatz and he said that they would be willing to help out. Also, I wanted the rally to be a progression from the 12 car rallies that both clubs had been running, and so it should be aimed primarily at nov- ices and beginners, like the original Harry and Ivy Ral- lies. Junction 38 services (Truck Stop), Tebay, seemed like a My Control locations before it got too Wet : Moz good base for the route I had in mind, and when I met with the manager, Rob Quinn, he was more than happy to work with us, because he was keen to raise the profile of the place and take away the misconception that it only ca- ters for truckers (whilst planning the route I have eaten there on several occasions and can confirm they serve excel- lent food). The first loop would run north starting off with Waters Farm, then on to Shap, Reagill, the tricky Barnskew white, fin- ishing near Appleby. The next section was the longest of the rally and started at Hoff, Dry Beck, the long Breaks Hall white (with infamous hump back bridge), Bleatarn, Whygill, Leases Ford, Smardale, a loop round Waitby before fin- ishing near the top of Ash Fell. The next section would run south from Nateby, along the Tommy Road and onto the twisty, narrow yellow that leads to Ravonstonedale. The final section of the first half, would use Sunbiggin Tarn, Raisbeck and Scarside. The latter hadn’t been used for a while and took a bit of persuasion in the PR department. The second half was due to use some classic roads of old, including Fairmile, Fox’s Pulpit, Paddy Lane, Jungle Café and Bretherdale. Again, the latter has been a bit of a PR hotspot, but Paul Shatz’s smooth talking had secured this fantastic stretch of road – but it was not meant to be. Entries were slow despite plenty of posts on social media; not being part of a championship was one explanation but we wanted to run on a clubman’s permit rather than the expensive interclub license to try and encourage those new to the sport. With just 21 when entries closed, we decided it was still worthwhile running the event – there was a nice mix of beginners and experience, quality not quantity. PR’ing had gone fairly well, the locals welcomed the event with enthusiasm, it was only a few “off-comed ‘ns” who gave me a bit of grief. Another slight hiccup, friends of ours had booked three lodges that weekend at Center Parcs, which as a family we had been invited to. Well Penrith isn’t that far from Tebay, so the morning of the event I spent in the hottub, with the sun shining and a pleasant breeze blowing, thinking the threat of the promised storm, Ciera had been exaggerated – how wrong I could be. That afternoon I spent checking the route, talking to the landowners and putting code boards in the NAMs. Driving under the railway bridge at Breaks Hall I heard a rumble and looked up to see a steam train at full chat on the Settle -Carlisle line – life was good. Leases ford was very low and apart from sheep close to the road down Fairmile, there didn’t seem to be any issues. It had started to rain and the breeze had picked up a bit by the time I returned to the Truck Stop, but I had no idea what was to come. When crews started to arrive for scrutineering it was raining hard and blowing a gale, Roger Whitaker was able to do his duties under the canopy of the garage forecourt, but poor Ric Wood was doing the noise out in the open in the lorry park. Miles Whitelock (chief marshal) had been worried whether the promise of marshals would materialise, but everyone to a man and woman turned up and with a few extras on the night, he was able to man all the controls. The rain outside had been relentless and by the time of the drivers briefing Continued on Page 25 Harry & Ivy Novice Rally Continued from Page 24 I was starting to get a bit concerned about the possible level of Leases Ford, so Steve Head went out to do recce and reported back that it was easily passable. There were a few concerns about plotting amongst some of the be- ginner crews who had been issued with the route at signing on, so Dan suggested we could travel up to Tebay Services North, where there was a seated area where they could plot and we could assist if needed, which seemed useful. I was sitting in with Josh doing opening course car duties – his rally car had developed low oil pressure the week before the event so we were using his Scirrocco diesel road car. The atrocious conditions soon became evident when I jumped out into 6 inches of water to put out an arrow on the aptly named Waters Farm. In the lanes I was amazed how quickly the water had accumulated in such a relatively short time, with large areas of standing water. When we got to Leases it was a raging torrent and not safe to pass through, it had risen dramatically in the half an hour since Paul and Miles had driven through (all be it gingerly) putting out code boards. We had a passage con- trol and secret check nearby so we were able to (hopefully) reroute the competitors round Soulby to rejoin the original route, missing out the Smardale loop and I decided to retrieve the code board at the end of Leases white and place it on the amended route. Just as I was hammering it in, we saw the lights of the first car approaching, so we made a hasty exit down lanes that were now running like rivers – the choice of a diesel car now seemed a good one. We managed to open up a bit of gap from the first car and the Tommy Road came as a relief (I bet that’s never been said before) because there was relatively little standing water. We caught Paul and Miles at the control outside Ravenstonedale, and it was decided we would go on ahead and put the boards out on Sunbiggin and they would cut through to Raisbeck. At the junction at the top of Sunbiggin Tarn it was blowing a ferocious gale, I could hardly open the car door. Round the Scarside loop, the conditions were no better and the marshals who were manning the passage controls to slow drivers down past the PR sensi- tive bit were fighting with the wind and rain just to stand up. Thankfully, the end of the first half was not far away and it was relief to get back to the sanctuary of the Truck Stop. Tom Wilcox/Joe Glendinning were the first to follow us in, where Graeme Cornthwaite/Lynsey Proctor were al- ready waiting after their immaculate Mini had drowned out; eventually they had managed to get it going but decid- ed to call it a day. Others weren’t quite so lucky, PeteTyson, Tony Harrison, Myles Gleave and Phil Martin all suc- cumbing to the conditions. The remaining crews arrived back in dribs and drabs over the next hour. The main dis- cussion was should we continue? With the stoicism that road rallyists seemed to possess some were happy to press on, others weren’t so sure - the storm hadn’t relented so the conditions for the marshals was the deciding factor to abandon the rally and to call every one back to base. While Ian Mills was working on the results, the next task was to work out how to feed everyone, there was limited hot food in the shop, which we commandeered for those who wanted to get away, but breakfast in the main restaurant was booked for 4 am, 2 hours away. Amaz- ingly, after one or two phone calls, Rob Quinn and 3 members of staff came in and cooked a superb full English breakfast (you could have up to 10 items if you so wished!) for those who chose to wait. The results were pro- duced quickly and efficiently, with Stephen Holmes/Joe Mallinson declared winners, James Rawsthorn/Martin Quilliam winners of the Novices, Ryan Robinson/Adam Thompson took Beginners honours and Dan Sedgwick/ Matt Hewlett won the Open class – full results can be found at rallyroots.com.uk. So, the event didn’t go quite to plan and I found it a big step up from organising the 12 cars. However, I had a lot of help from Dan Willan, Miles and Paul Whitelock and Paul Shatz in particular, and Katy Mashiter with the printing but we also had strong support from the rest of the KLMC committee, for which I am very grateful. Also, we were generously supported by Motorsport Mugs in providing H&I mugs for the marshals and award winners. However, the real heroes of the event were the marshals who braved the most atrocious conditions, many of them down to do two or even three controls – I shouldn’t really mention any names as all the marshals are absolute leg- ends, but two or three spring to mind: Gary Rigg who had a relatively sheltered spot under the railway bridge on Breaks Hall with wife, Clare and Jane Clarke until Miles asked him if he would move further up the road to man a gate; when we arrived the rain was lashing straight at him and he could hardly stand up. When you see Samantha Relph and Rachel Wilson they are always having a laugh despite the conditions, they were asked to man a control on Jungle Café so to get there they had to get out and open 6 gates only to find it was cancelled so they had to do it all again to get back. And finally, Gareth Adams and Moz (and possibly others) who had spent the day marshal- ling on the Cambrian and had rushed back to do our event. These are the very backbone of grassroots motorsport and without whom, events like the Harry and Ivy would never happen, thankyou once again. Nick Townley : Harry & Ivy Novice Rally Clerk of Course : Kirkby Lonsdale MC North Wales CC Cambrian Rally 8th February EWAN Tindall endured a Cambrian Rally debut best described by the young driver as ‘character building’. The 18-year-old John Easson Award winner finished 27th overall and fifth in the R2 class, in his new left-hand-drive Fiesta. But Tindall was far from satisfied at the finish in Landudno after suffering problems on every single stage of the North Wales-based event. “It was a day when nothing went to plan, and we didn’t get a single clean run,” said Ewan, who is contesting the 2020 BTRDA Rallye R2 Cup. “We got off to a steady start on SS1 Crafnant 1, but the stage itself was pretty rough, and halfway through we picked up a front right puncture. We were lucky the tyre didn’t come off the rim, but we were haemorrhaging time.” Very tight timing on the road sections between stages meant Tin- dall and new co-driver Andrew Roughead lost time changing the puncture after SS1, arriving at SS2 Gwydr 1 three minutes late. “We were getting into a good rhythm in Gwydr, but then smoke starting billowing into the cabin together with a smell of burning oil. Although the oil pressure was holding up, the clutch was also slip- ping badly and again, we began to lose time,” explained Ewan. Arriving at service after SS2, Ewan and his service crew of dad Lee and Simon Hewitt lifted the bonnet to discover the entire engine bay covered in oil. Checking for obvious leaks, the team cleaned the engine as best they could, before deciding whether to continue or not. “We topped up the oil and decided to try SS3 to see if things would improve,” said Ewan. “We did set a good time in Penmachno and on the following stage at the Great Orme, but the clutch slip was getting worse. At the next service, my dad and Simon discovered the leak was from the sump seal, and they did an amazing job in repairing it in the allotted 20 minutes so that we could get through the final three stages. “The first two were re-runs of the opening stages, and by then, they were in an appalling condition. We had to pick our way through the rocks and boulders for fear of taking a wheel off.” Despite all the issues, Tindall and Roughead went into the final stage, Elsi, a brilliant third in class. “How we were up to third was beyond me, given all our problems, but it looked like we might just get a good result,” he said. But the 11-mile stage, described by Tindall as ‘one of the worst I’ve ever driven’ dealt a late blow, when another puncture – which re- sulted in the tyre coming off – left the pair driving the last five miles on the rim. The time lost dropped them down to fifth overall, scant reward for the team’s efforts throughout the rally. “I was very disappointed at the finish, and all ccompetitors can have days like we had, but taking the positives, we got the car to the end and had plenty of time, and picked up our first points in the BTRDA Championship,” he said. *Ewan Tindall would like to thank the 2300 Club of Blackburn, dad Lee, Simon Hewitt, and Andrew Roughead. Back in the Corolla for the long journey North to the land of the midnight sun. Well, perhaps not that far North but it seemed like it, especially after a small de- tour to circumnavigate some new wetlands deposited by storms Ciara and Dennis. The Clio is still a work in progress, but getting there, so the trusty (completely Hexham & DMC standard – have I said that before?) was to be JOHN ROBSON RALLY our carriage for the evening. Hard wearing knobblies 22/23 FEB 2020 were recommended for the rough roads up there, but we didn’t have any of those so the tyres were fairly standard as well and we were hoping not to repeat the disaster of two years ago when we got three punctures and had to borrow a wheel to get back home on after only half way. As it turned out, Mark managed to avoid all the worst of the potholes. I thought the road round here were bad. At the drivers’ briefing it was my pleasure to present Jonathon Webb (C of C) with the Paul Coombes Trophy for the best SD34 road rally of 2019, as voted for by the competitors. Very well deserved and it was no surprise to see that this year’s event had attracted over 50 entries across the main rally with the Historic and Trophies rallies running alongside. We picked up the first half of the plotting at the somewhat unusual start time of 8.00pm. With an hour to plot and then get up to TTC2 with the instructions in a plot and bash format, the route went down fairly quickly. It was a steady start for us and MJ was soon apologising for not going quick enough, with me replying that it was fine in a standard car with no cage. After all, we didn’t want to end up like car 7 who, despite the warning given at the briefing that the first corner was a square right fresh air bend that needed to be taken with caution, ended up the wrong side of what looked like a ten foot drop off the road. The crew were okay and they even managed to get back in the rally, which seemed impossible from where they ended up. Good effort lads. They did eventually come a cropper in the second half on another right hander, this time the ditch was not giving up its prey. It soon became apparent that Jonathon had got his seeding slightly wrong, perhaps because we’d entered as a rally car and not a shopping car. We finished 14th and that’s where we should have been seeded, swapping places with car 14 behind us. However, it didn’t take long for Kris Coombes and Matt Hewlett in their Nissan Micra WRC (well that what it says on the entry list) to catch and pass us for the first of many times that night. The problem being that not only were we over a minute slower than them on every section, but the way the event was timed was that what would normally be classed as neutral section was, rather cleverly, classed as a slack standard section, which meant that any time dropped (provided it was within the ¾ rule) could be made up. This kept the rally together and most people at the right end of the time card. The downside is that poor Kris has to relinquish the place on the road he gained at the end of every section and had to overtake us all over again, and again, and again... Fair play to MJ, he did pull over cleanly and quickly and we didn’t slow them down, although it certainly affected our times by a few sec- onds a section. But we’re only in it for the fun. To be fair, our times were quite respectable for the night, our worst be- ing to TC23 where we dropped over 4 minutes, but I’m blaming that on stopping for an entire herd of sheep to follow each other across the road and then overshooting a secret check which caught us by surprise (well it was a secret). The only real problem of the night, facing everybody, was that the planned petrol halt cancelled at short notice. There was a solution, but it meant a 30 mile round trip back towards Hexham, which would have been tight for some if they had picked up too much lateness. The second half of the route was given to us at TC16 (I think) and we had to plot this on the go, which gave the navi- gators (well, me anyway) a bit more of a challenge. You ended up plotting parts of the route that you weren’t on which meant having to remember where you were. I did have a minor panic a one point, not having a clue where we were on the map, but pulled it together in time. In the final analysis we had a cracking night’s sport on some great roads and didn’t pick up any punctures, finishing a semi-respectable 14th overall. This year’s John Robson Rally is surely a contender for retaining the Paul Coombes trophy. The organisation was faultless from start to finish, it was well marshalled, all the paperwork was spot on and the route was superb. Thanks to Jonathon, Ali and the rest of the Hexham team for putting on a great event and thanks as always to the marshals who braved some bitterly cold and wet weather for us but remained cheerful throughout. We’ll be back next year, hopefully in a rally car. Mark Johnson / Steve Butler Clitheroe & DMC Toyota Corolla : Car 13 Thoughts from the Clerk of the Course I would like to write a few words about this years John Rob- son/Hexham Historic/Hexham Trophy Rallies. Hexham & DMC To me it was all about the fantastic team of people who gave up their time, not only on the night, but for months and JOHN ROBSON RALLY months in advance. 22/23 FEB 2020 Ali has been fantastic as my co organiser, Luke and Josh for doing a great job with the Marshals. However it’s also the people who are not normally mentioned. Paul Wilson, who has been a great help with the entries and accounting, George Charlton for the clocks, Martin Cook for the Rally Stickers, and Andrew Miller for all the equipment and for spending hours outside in the freezing cold setting up and tidying up the start finish venue. These are all volunteers who not only gave up their time before hand, but also mar- shalled right through the night without complaint. Alan Ben- nison for sponsoring the event again and providing the awards. Also thanks Colin Fish and Simon Jennings for course closing duties and to Colin Salkeld and his team for scrutineering in awful conditions. I have to give a very special mention Ian Guthrie and Graham Hall for doing an amazing job as sweep car, you helped so many crews on the night, I couldn’t think of a better recipient for this years spirit of the rally award. The fact you didn’t get back until nearly 05:00 showed how busy your night had been. Lastly we can’t mention rallying in the north east without thanking Ed Graham, without his tireless efforts, the club would have died out a long time ago and the fact we are the last club putting on a ‘proper’ road rally in the North East speaks volumes. Thanks Eddie. Moving on to the event itself, thank you for all the marshals who came out in some horrendous weather. We wouldn’t have a rally without you. We had a lot of gates on the night, and we got them all manned. I would like to share a comment I have had from Marshal Ed Barber 'A good thing that i have only seen on motor bike trials was every competitor thanked us for marshaling as they pulled up and i think that means a lot to marshals Well done again.' So thank you for all the competitors, a bit of respect goes a long way. Well done for Bevan and Niall for winning the John Robson and also being first overall of the 3 events. It was a tough night and to come out with a win deserves big respect. A few anecdotes from the night: Firstly we can’t do anything without mentioning Mr Moon ignoring my advice at the drivers briefing and going straight off on the first corner glad you got out and enjoyed the rest of the event. There was an old lady at the quiet section at Buteland who was complaining to me that the cars weren’t going fast enough, as it’s more fun when going fast around the corners. I pointed out we had a complaint from a neighbour in the past she just went ‘ooooh spoil ‘if you need a gate marshalling in the future let me know’ You may remember in the pre event publicity I mentioned we were using a road that hasn’t been used since the mid ‘70s. Well I got an email at 01:00 from a resident there: ‘Hi, just wanted to ask you to pass on my thanks to your members on the above rally, ok i am a bit of an enthusiast anyway, but your members taking part in the rally did a great job of mitigating any unnecessary noise going through Donkleywood, considering there is a 90 left in the middle of the village and a hill in and out there was/is little noise on the evening, so just to say thanks to them, hope everyone was safe and had fun. Hopefully you won't get any complaints, and you keep promoting motorsport, too many places where it is getting banned ‘ Paul, George, Martin, Josh and I spent days and days doing the PR for the event, it all seems to have been worth it with very little issues on the night. With the majority of competitors travelling vast distances to get to us up here, I can only hope that you felt the trip up was worth it. It’s a shame a hidden boulder ended a number of crews nights early. Still there’s always next year if you still want to come back! Sorry if I haven’t mentioned everyone specifically on this post, but to all who were involved in this years event, from marshals to competitors, noise and scrutineering, I can just say a massive thank you and we couldn’t have done it without you. Jonathon Webb TJS Self Drive Alan Healy Memorial Rally Cadwell Park Four On The Bounce For Bird Penrith-born racing driver Frank Bird continued his mete- oric rise when he claimed a superb victory on the TJS Self Drive Alan Healy Memorial Rally at Cadwell Park and in doing so made it an unprecedented four wins in a row. The event formed the fifth round of the 2019/2020 Motor- sport News Circuit Rally Championship with MSVR and after claiming a comprehensive victory by over a minute, the 20-year-old Cumbrian, along with Hexham co-driver Jack Morton, catapulted themselves to the head of the standings. The pair finished second in the corresponding event last year in Frank’s third ever event back in April but such has been his prowess since, this victory adds to those on the Knockhill Stages and Christmas Stages events in Decem- ber and also last month’s MGJ Engineering Brands Hatch Winter Stages. In the Dom Buckley Motorsport-prepared Ford Focus WRC07, with backing from VisionTrack, Yuasa, Frank Bird Poultry, Hager, Mac Tools, Fuchs Silkolene and PBM, conditions at the Lincolnshire track were a bit tricky early on meaning Frank had to settle for second best on the opening two stages but once he hit the front on SS3, he wasn’t bettered. Frank Bird: “Overall, we have had a really good day at Cadwell Park, and I’m delighted to get another win. This morn- ing was a bit tricky with wet conditions and a stall on a hairpin cost us some time early on but once we got over that, it went great. We had a mega afternoon just chipping away to win by over a minute. The car was again brilliant so as ever, thanks to Jack for another great job on the maps, the lads for keeping the car sweet and of course my dad and all our sponsors. Headed off to a restaurant around seven, six of us in tow just a small drive further up the road.. Saturday saw a blustery start to the day,our start time of 9-30 came fairly quickly after marking up the stage maps. Stage one was fairly slippery in places,Mike getting to grips with the Mazda MX5,sections of gravel which he took very quickly, passing some of the quicker cars here. Onto stage two after a half hour service, heading back to the pit area as part of the stage we clipped some fencing which came through the front quarter window of Mikes' side, wiping the door mirror completely off, luckily the roll cage saved thewood from entering any further and snapped fortunately.. Stage three went without mishap, the service team doing a fine job of repair the front wing damage and another mirror fitted. Stage four and we were doing well, taking a few seconds off some off the more powerful cars which Mike was very pleased with.."just don't get too cocky Mike!".. Stage Five, the next lot to be opposite direction,..think Mike must have a fence fetish as we again caught a fence turning square left and drifted wide catching it just before turning square right onto gravel where a Avenger had decided to stop, marshals slowing us down,no more incidents after this thankfully. Adrian Lloyd : Liverpool MC MSN Circuit Rally Championship Snetterton Snetterton Stages Rally, the sixth round (if I can count correct- ly) of the MSN Rally Championship, and once again I had the ‘pleasure’ of sitting alongside Paul Gorge in the wonderfully prepared Sheard Autosport Mazda MX-5 MK1 – I seriously have fallen in love with this motor, it may not be the easiest to climb in and out of, but it is so much fun out on the stages – you should definitely check out hiring one from him! Speaking of falling in love, Snetterton was the 15th February, this is the day after Valentine’s Day, so Paul & I booked into a nearby hotel the night before, for some passionate pre-rally preparation. To be honest, I was concerned when checking in as Paul had assured me it was a twin room he had booked, then the guy on reception cheerily mentioned how we had been ‘upgraded free of charge’ to a nicer room… I had fears that this was all part of Paul’s cunning plan, and we were about to be shown the honeymoon suite, with rose petals sprinkled across a heart-shaped bed, and a mirrored ceiling – thankfully I was wrong! OK, before I begin writing the next instalment of 50 Shades of Grey, I should perhaps get on to the rally! Heading into this round, Paul & I were sitting at the top of the Championship in Class B, however with all competitors drop- Photos courtesy of Ben Goulding Photography ping a round at the end, we knew that we had to get a good class position to stay in the battle for a Top Three finish. As had been the norm during this championship, we woke up (always a good start) and were greeted by a wet and slippery race track. Thankfully the weather didn’t dampen our spirits, and Paul seemed to be on a mission from the very start, post- ing solid opening stage times, and catching cars along the way, which was good because my note reading in the first stage left much to be desired! Stage Three, things became interesting! Heading down the opening straight towards a right hander, Paul went to shift up, and realised that the throttle was sticking open, this actually seemingly gave us a slight advantage as it meant Paul was ap- proaching corners and chicanes at a slightly higher speed than before, and despite having to work the wheel a little more, we ended up posting our first Top 30 stage time of the day, push- ing us up to 4th in Class and only a handful of seconds behind 2nd in Class. During SS3 we also had some great battles with a couple of cars we caught, and got very sideways on the gravel sections of the track. During service we cleaned the throttle cable up, and checked the linkages and all seemed fine, so we headed to SS4 and, on approach to the first chicane, the throttle stuck open again and saw us having to bail out of the chicane as opposed to wiping the stage furniture out. Thankfully this seemed to be the last of the throttle issues, and the rest of the day we had smooth accelerating – we did have to have a brief meeting with the clerk of course regarding our grass excursion! Throughout the day, we had some great fun whilst catching cars on stage, a highlight for me was ‘dancing’ with a Tri- umph TR7 through the gravel section of SS4. We came out of SS6 with it all still to play for, sitting 30th overall and 2nd in Class, but with two stages left we were only 6 seconds up on a very fast Mark Peterson in his C2R2. Paul managed to pull two inspired drives out of the bag setting 26th & 24th fastest stage times in the final two stages, securing 2nd in Class and 29th overall, meaning our Championship battle is still very much alive with two rounds to go. As always, I would like to give a huge thank you to our sponsors at BAM Construct UK, Spring & Company Ltd. & Red Tree Building Contractors. A special mention as well to all the awesome marshals and organisers who ensured we all had a great day out, with minimal delays! Bird At Snetterton

Continuing his push for the 2019/2020 Motorsport News Circuit Rally Championship with MSVR, Penrith-born racing driver Frank Bird continued his fantastic form when he scorched to yet another victory at today’s Snetterton Stages Rally in Norfolk. The event formed the sixth round of the series and now af- ter winning the last four having non-scored in round one and missing round two, the 20-year-old Cumbrian, along with Hexham co-driver Jack Morton have given themselves a great chance of landing the crown with two rounds re- maining. In the Dom Buckley Motorsport-prepared Ford Focus WRC07, with backing from VisionTrack, Yuasa, Frank Bird Poultry, Hager, Mac Tools, Fuchs Silkolene and PBM, Frank dominated once again from start to finish. Fastest on the opening stage by 11 seconds, he was never headed, winning all remaining seven stages to cross the finish ramp a comprehensive 2 minutes 29 seconds ahead of his nearest rival meaning he goes into the next round at Anglesey on March 1st full of confidence and looking to ex- tend his winning streak even further. The victory was the fifth in a row in the past two months, adding to the wins at Knockhill, Brands Hatch and Cadwell Park in the series as well as the non-championship Christ- mas Stages Rally at Croft. Frank Bird: “Another top day which couldn’t really have gone any better. We were nice and clean through every stage and made no mistakes so to come out with the win by nearly two and a half minutes was great. The stages were a bit different being a mix of the circuit combined with some loose stuff which I really enjoyed. The car was fantas- tic and never missed a beat so thanks once again to Dom Buckley Motorsport as well as Jack on the notes and of course my dad and our sponsors for making it possible. That’s five wins on the bounce so I hope I can keep the run going.” Photos courtesy of Russ Otway/90right.com. Clerk of the Course Mark Quayle believes this year’s Manx Rally is shaping up to be one of the finest in its history. “The roads on the Isle of Man are famed the world over for their unforgiving nature and unrivalled challenge, but to be able to add probably the most iconic stage on the island to our itinerary in 2020 is really the icing on the cake for Manx Auto Sport,” he says. “Castletown holds many fond memories for fans and drivers alike so we are looking forward to watching crews blast around the harbour once again, it’s certainly been a few years since we have seen that on the Manx. As well as that, we have some fantastic stage lined up with a pretty relentless itinerary ensuring crews are tested to the limits when they come here to compete. The Manx has never been easy, and this year is no different”. Organisers have also been able to secure discounted Ferry crossings and accomodation with their Official Travel Partner Isle of Man Event Services* and the entry fee for the Manx Rally starts from just £660. Event regulations and more information on the route, along with the opening of entries will be released on 1st March. February 22nd The Co Drivers Return, Fifteen years. 1000’s of stage miles and quite a few co drivers have graced the silly seat since Mel C last read the notes for me. So it was great to have her back for the Ormco Stages Rally at Jurby last weekend. Due to my first planned event of the year been postponed until later in the year, a decision was made to head to the Isle of Man instead for the first round of the Manx Rally Championship, We’d always talked about us competiting again and this seemed an ideal event to ease Mel back into it. The idea being to trailer the rally car to Heysham ( but drive it on the boat to save money ) for the 14.15 ferry on the Friday afternoon, scrutineer as soon as I arrived. Ral- ly Saturday and back home Sunday morning. Due to yet another storm coming in, and the chance the the ferry may be cancelled, I changed the booking to Friday morn- ing at 02.15 instead, to at least guarantee getting there. Not the best run south with first heavy snow then high winds to content with down the A9. Into Heysham by mid- night, car unloaded and checked in ready to sail. With no spare cabins, I decided to blow the rally budget and travel in the premier lounge for a bit of comfort, and try to get some sleep. Woke a few times during the night, but de- cided just to keep my eyes closed as it was fairly rough. Spent Friday morning altering belts and checking car over ready for scrutineering at Motor Mall that night. With us all checked and signed on by 20.00, it was time to chill ready for the next day Saturday morning, and we are at the windy service area ready for first drivers briefing, then familiarisation run of SS1. I’ve only competited at Jurby twice before, both times co driving for ‘ Captain Slow ‘ Nigel Cordwell in his 205. there is only so many ways you can weave about the runways through gates made from cones, so I was confident we knew where we were supposed to go. Each stage comprised of 2 loops, with a slight alteration between 2 and 3 First 2 stages went without a hitch, but on SS3 I decided to follow everyone else’s line across the grass to the flying finish. Not the best idea as we cross the line sideways before disappearing into some gorse bushes and back on the road to pull up at the stop line. One more stage to do before lunch, and the stages would be reversed, with an additional loop in the afternoon. The afternoon passed without any major problems apart the cones blowing down making it hard to find the gates. Although she had been quiet in the morning, Mel was getting back into the swing of things by the end of the event Results went provisional showing us in 21st overall and 2nd in class, with 1 minutes penalty for missing 2 gates. Not the result I was wanting but we had a laugh and that’s what it’s all about. Tara never missed a beat all day and looks totally different with her winter make over The journey home was a complete opposite to the one down. Calm sea and a sunny A9 Big thanks as ever to those that made it possible for us to come and play. Iain Macleod for the loan of helmet and HANS device. Ilkley and District Navigation championship Round 3 of the Skipton Trophy started at the clubs headquarters at Otley rugby club and took the crews on a twisty journey across to the Heifer pub just outside Skipton. 12 crews plotted the 40 points available and had to choose the best route to visit Grass Roots as many of those points as possible in the 2 hours they had, a bit like orienteering in cars. The furthest plot was over in Settle Motor Sport and the closest just up the road above Otley. Championship leaders Dave Blaney and Andy Pullan set out to make these 3 wins in a row in their trusty Micra but had tough competition from Clive Rouse and Henry Carr, Clive choosing to use his Audi A2 rather than his Tesla to guide them through the tight lanes of the Dales. Neil and Claire Raven were looking to protect their 2nd place in the championship relying on the nimble Saxo VTR to provide the pace required to achieve a good result. First timers Jane and Gary Mitchell had a baptism of fire as the organisers, Nick and Hazel Pullan, had spread the plots over 4 maps! They had a great night and will be back for more fun. As the crews arrived back at the pub the results started to come in. There are strict penalties for arriving late so everyone made it back on time. Dave and Andy secured 1st place with Clive and Henry in a close 2nd place. Novice Team of Richard Bastow and Richard Snuggs had a great run with 3rd as their reward. Left to Right: Nick Pullan, Chris Tindall There are two rounds left with Dave and Andy looking good for the champion- ship but there are several teams who could upset their reign. Bevan Blacker & Niall Frost had been running in 5th overall but retired with a snapped drive shaft just after first petrol halt. Carl Hawkins and Iain Tullie had also made a promising start but re- tired from 8th in a similar location. Peter Scott and Nick Cooper didn't have much luck and broke the gear box at Time Control 5, of 68 time controls, making it a long journey and rather short night! Several crews were also out on the Ryemoor Trophy, organised by Malton Motor Club. There was a similar story of torrid luck here with both Joe Mallinson and Jason Metcalfe and Steve Mitchell and Ian Mitchell breaking an engine mount on the moors above Pateley Bridge. Ilkley did have one member who actually made it to the finish of an event, well done to Mark Standen on his early championship lead! New President Ilkley and District Motor Club has a new president! After 2 years in the post Nick Pullan has stepped down and Chris Tindall has taken the reigns of the local motor club based at Otley rugby club. Both Nick and Chris have held the role before and are taking the club forward to guide it through changes being imposed by the governing body, Motor Sport UK, and the challenge of boosting the clubs membership. Chris stepped up to the top table at the Ilkley and District motor club’s annual AGM and will see the club, which was formed in 1910 at the Crescent Hotel, Ilkley, celebrate it’s 110th anniversary this year. Before Nick passed on the chains of office he had one other task to perform on the night which was to draw the lucky winner from a hat for a ride in a world rally car. The lucky winner was club member David Smith. The raffle was in aid of Nicks chosen chari- ty, The Multiple Sclerosis Society, and raised £540 which brought the grand total of £5051 raised by club members and motor club events throughout his two year term in office. 2300 Club go marshalling on the Cambrian Rally The 6.30 alarm didn’t go off in room 122 in the Travelodge in Llandudno. Luckily we were awake, feeling the excitement, Grass Roots knowing it would be a big day. The Cambrian Rally, and storm Ciara. Motor Sport The 11 strong 2300club marshalling team met in the hotel lobby at 7am with the usual banter of who would navigate to the stage start at Penmachno. With good directions and a frank Si- natra cd we arrived at the sign on point/stage start, to be greeted by one of our club mates Mark Wilkinson, who was stage com- mander. Once we had signed on we made our way through the stage looking for junction 16. Travelling through the forest we noted just how slippery the track was. It had a layer of damp greasy mud on top. "This is going to be fun" we thought!! On arrival at junction 16, which was a crossroads, we found a safe place to park all our vehicles then proceeded to make a very fine breakfast of sausage, bacon and hash brown butties with hot coffee. A proper Marshalls breakfast considering the weather, very cold and windy. Fully fuelled we were ready. The spectators came in their hundreds, many with cameras with long lenses. All behaved impeccably. There was a great atmosphere, despite the cold. Then came the cars, and they didn't disappoint. The superb R5 cars blending the road underneath them. So fast, awesome to see. 2300 club had a special interest in the proceedings. The 2011 John Easson Award Winner Osian Pryce was at car 4 in a R5; he came through looking very fast, neat & tidy, then at car 10 was the 2018 John Easson Award Winner George Lepley. He was in the blue WD40 sponsored Mitsubishi. Unfortunately he had stopped earlier in the stage to change a puncture. In order to make up for his lost time he was going at a good pace, but had a Proton hot on his tail! Our main support this year was for Ewan Tindall in car 53, a Fiesta R2, who is our current John Easson Award winner. It has to be said we were all slightly concerned when car 52 came through, then higher numbers and then a very big gap. Has he broken down or was he off the road or even ok? There were still a few cars to come but would Ewan be one of them? Then the sound of a rally car on full chat could be heard in the distance, then a Marshall's whistle and a white car coming into view. It was Ewan, we all beamed and cheered. Fantastic. He was going very well, nicely through the corner and away down the freshly blended road. We were all relieved and very pleased. After the last car, the spectators made there way out of the stage, some even thanking us for our efforts, which was nice. It had been a pleasure. It was our job to clear the stage. This entailed removing the tape, stakes & arrows and any signs before we could leave. By around 2pm we arrived in Betws-y-Coed to see the service and refuel points in action. Also time for a spot of lunch. Even managed to get a few nice photos in the service point . We made it back to Llandudno still frozen to the bone, just in time for the champagne finish on the ramp. Osian Pryce finished in second place and got to spray the fizz with 1st and 3rd placed crews. There was a really nice at- mosphere. George Lepley, multiple award winner, got his chance on the ramp. Great event so far but would Ewan finish? We had agreed to meet him at the finish 45 minutes after the champagne presentation. The light was fading, it was raining, fingers crossed, we waited. A White fiesta appeared on the roundabout, he pulled into the last control. We were delighted he had finished. Congratulations to Ewan for finishing a very tough, difficult event in 27th place. Our job done, it had been a great day for us all. Ewan had to load up the car on the trailer and head all the way back to the northeast with storm Ciara bearing down. Our thoughts go out to the residents of Llanwrst who were very badly flooded overnight into Sunday morning. We are all looking forward to our next outing. The opening regularity ran via the series of 90’s down the B6309 and across the Military Road to finish near Whittle Dene, Tait/ Davison set the pattern for the night here, dropping just a single second, brilliant timekeeping in fact, the section saw several good performances with Dodds/Gibson dropping just 2 seconds and Jennings/Magee a mere 4, it set things up for a battle during the rest of the night. Two short 4 mi- nute sections followed, running West to Newton and back to Shildon Hill, after which only Tait/Davison remained clean, with Dodds/ Gibson (Proton ), Jennings/Magee (Peugeot ), Robinson/Procter (Audi) and Cook/ Blth ( A-H Sprite) all tied together a minute down. Turning North, the route headed up towards Matfen then West to Great Whittington and down the very “Yumpy” yellow back towards Matfen again, the temperature had dropped considerably since the rally began and there was quite a lot of ice on this section. Cook/ Blyth dropped a minute on this section, Sally Ann Hewitt/ Mark Lewis ( Mini Clubman) dropped 2 and Sarah Parker/ Roy Perkins (Porsche ) dropped 7. A qui- et through Matfen was followed by a blast along the fast yellow to Fen- wick and then a meander North to TC.5 at Makemerich Farm where good PR work ensured that the control could be sited right outside the farm buildings. The section from TC.5 to TC.6 featured a map extract which, for some reason, caused crews more problems than expected, the route ran North via Capheaton and used a rather “Cobbly” yellow past Clock Mill and Mirlaw Houseand used the not as map triangle at Kirkharle before crossing the A696 to Deanham and looping back round to the Make- merich crossroads. After previous rumours of the events can- cellation due to poor entries and last minute route changes it was good to see a twenty two strong ‘200’ field, followed by a near eighty strong main field. North Wales Car Club can be proud of their efforts and Joint Clerks Alyn Edwards and Wenna Roberts and their teams did a sterling job in making the event a reality. For me the event meant pairing up with Chris Woodcock to share a pair of stages each in Control, for me Penmachno and Llyn Elsi, sup- ported by Heidi looking after the management channel, with Dom also in attendance and providing essential technical and practical support. Our Control in one of the stormiest weekends of the year was based in the Mostyn Suite, a tiny internal room resembling a Welsh sauna on the ground floor of the hotel. When I arrive Chris and Heidi are busy setting up for the first stages in Crafnant and then Gwydyr, whilst I set about thinking about Penmachno SS3. As ever the Control is a hive of measured chaos as Pilot cars set about their work in the field, Alyn and Wenna answering queries and problem solving as we get near to first car scheduled into Crafnant at 09:46, a somewhat unusually lei- surely start, compared to many events, with a total of seven stages expected. As I get into organising my stages and responding to various ques- tions and issues of my own it soon becomes apparent that we have some technical issues, when I transmit on Channel 3, I can affect our Chris on Channel 1 and vice versa, a not uncommon problem. Dom and the Gemini field controllers out in the forests make various tech- nical changes to help, although we never quite resolve the issue and have to make the best of it, at all times protecting airtime on one stage as safety and other matters arise. As ever we develop a coping strategy and get on with the job in hand, breakfast !!. Back to the serious business of a rally, I am soon into radio checks across SS3 and responding to various radios and marshals who need to move about the stage. By about 09:00 the first of the significant safety cars begin to enter Penmachno and with Chris’s stages live we juggle the airtime between us, sometimes having to call ‘wait out’ as the other stages takes priority. My first challenge of the day is out at Junction 22 where an understandably angry farmer is concerned as spectators begin to access up the track and his farm to the stage. A quick word with Alyn and Wenna and we get hold of the event security team to resolve matters at the entry point off the public road. Our all important Safety Delegate enters the stage just after ten, so it’s red flags to the front as the Delegate makes one of the last checks before the 00 and 0 Pilot Cars enter the stage. With the all clear given and the Pilot cars a safe distance through or indeed out of the stage, Penmachno SS3 goes live with Car 222 at 10:45 and my hard work really starts. Almost from the go the radio waves are humming with references to missing cars on the tracking system or cars reported off into the rough edges of the stage. Car 222 doesn’t make it out as first car, hitting some sort of problem and Car 220 beats them to the stop line. Car 218 then stops with Gemini 17 with a fuel leak and Car 209 who are reported off with a mechanical issue at Junction 22 with Conwy 8. Next I have further reports from Gemini 17, who will become a later magnet for stricken cars, that Car 205 is partially blocking the stage to change a wheel, but they do get going after some delay. To add some further spice Car 211 is then reported as leaving the Stop Line minus a bonnet, something the Scrutineers and Police may have an interest in as they head to the highway. Continued on Page 45 Radio Mutterings Continued from Page 44 More alarmingly I next get reports of a missing car via tracking and begin the process on 81 of trying to isolate the area in which the car is missing. After sometime the crew themselves of Car 202 ring the Clerk to report them- selves “well off” around 13a, but thankfully both OK. Car 203 then joins the carnage at Junction 5/6, meaning of the 22 starters in this part of the field I now have four of them off in the stage and by just after eleven the 200 cars are all in and out of the stage, or at least those still mov- ing. With all of the stricken cars in a safe’ish place I get the green light to start the main field and Car 1 fires off the start line for SS3 at 11:26. Hardly have I metaphorically put the mike down and there is a safety shout and Car 6 is reported as being parked off stage with Conwy 2 at Junction 7. Car 8 is then reported missing and after a quick search is located changing a wheel again at Junction 7. A rather odd message the comes in from Elsi Deputy who reports that although they aren’t scheduled to start until much later on, one of the SS3 cars has arrived with them somewhat lost and confused and is appropriately redirected !!. More seriously Chris hits problems on SS2 and after about sixty odd cars the stage is stopped due to a stage blockage and sadly the final fifteen cars have to eventually travel through this stage non competitively and onto SS3. Meanwhile back in Penmachno, the stage that just keeps on giving, next I have reports that Car 17 has joined the ‘pay & display’ area at Junction 5/6, although parking space even off the stage is now reported as tight and we give a verbal warning to all at the start to slow down on the approach to this junction. Reports back from the scene to the CoC report cars just aren’t slowing down despite the by now multiple warning triangles. If to prove the point Car 23 then falls off the stage at around the same location !. A more serious shout then comes in from Gemini 17 that the stage is blocked and an SoS Board is being shown. As I try to get more details Alyn comes over and is speaking to a driver at the scene at 5/6 and it turns out that an SOS Board was displayed for Car 50 who was well off and quite rightly the following competitors followed due process and the ‘stage blockage’ was actually a competitor stopping at the next radio to report the matter. Thankfully as Alyn talks to the scene via mobile phone it becomes clear that the immediate SOS Board has been withdrawn and the crew are OK and the stage doesn’t need to be stopped. Once I sort out exactly what’s happened I call Mark, Commander 3 to brief him on what just happened and stand down the ‘safety or above’ message. As we now begin to approach the ‘gap’ created by the late stoppage in the previous stage, the Clerks sensibly ask me to stretch out the starts for the few cars before the break to two minutes to avoid a gap that needs an interim safe- ty car. Their ‘cunning’ plan works and we just avoid the need for an interim safety car before the first of the ‘convoyed’ cars gets to the start of SS3. Just as I am beginning to think things have calmed down there is safety shout from Mer- cury 11 at Junction 21 that the stage is partially blocked. Unbelievably the stopped vehicle manages to resolve the problem and rejoins the stage but minus helmets on a live stage !!. I won’t state the car number but words do fail me and a JoF report from Mercury 11 and a couple of later radios who similarly call in for a crew with no helmets is the order of the day. Finally the last car is clear safely out of SS3 by 13:12 and the mammoth task of recovering the 8 cars stopped in stage can begin, including the four all at 5/6. My hat goes off to Rabbit Recovery, Cam Rescue 2 and Gemini Recovery, later also assisted by Catseye Recovery who collectively manage to recover all of the stranded cars in daylight, quite a feat. As the Penmachno recoveries are ongoing I set about the final stage of day, SS7 Llyn Elsi, as Chris looks after the Orme and second runs through Crafnant and Gwydyr. After a few problems with residents access by 14:00 the princi- ple safety cars are beginning to enter the stage, with the all important Safety Delegate at 14:16. Unfortunately some- where along the way somebody missed dropping off extinguishers at the Stop Line and after failed attempts to re- solve the issue via the roving equipment vans, I’m forced to redirect Calder Rescue from the refuel halt (no longer required) to re-position themselves close to the end of SS7. With the Pilot cars soon into the stage, SS7 the final one of the day starts at 14:47, with Car 222. Meanwhile the recoveries on Penmachno continue and having got the vari- ous cars out of the scenery at 5/6, I now have reports that the service barges and trailers are stuck tying to turn around, yet more work for Rabbit and Cam. With the gods with us, all 14 of the 200 cars are safely in and out of Llyn Elsi and by 15:17 once they are all clear, I have permission to let Car 1 go. As the stage gets underway a few ‘missing’ cars are reported via tracking but all are safely found or genuine errors resolved. A more serious shout then comes across the airwaves from Gemini 53 out at Junction 13, who reports Car 75 off the stage but the crew are OK. The crew with some help then make protracted attempts to recover the car back onto the stage and in the end a combination of Stage Commander and Clerk ‘direction’ persuades them that the car is going to have to sadly stay where it is, as the last thing we need is a late incident caused by their enthusiasm to get their car back onto what is still very much a live stage. The remainder of the stage passes of without too much drama and 56 of the 57 starters make it to the end of the stage. With the sweeper and safety convoy into the stage it’s just a case of staying alert and providing ‘top cover’ for the final recovery of Car 75 before it’s time to stand down and begin to derig the control after a most enjoyable event. Next month I’m down for the Malcolm Wilson and North West Stages. Ian Davies : Gemini 23 / motorsport UK Radio Controller. Saturday the 1st of February and I should have been marshal- ling at Blyton on the Hall Trophy Rally but because of difficul- ties with the sites new manager the Jack Neal and Hall Trophy Grumpy SV Stage Rallies wont be running this year (or until this guy gets found out by Ginetta) - so with very little time to spare Old Git Chris & Heidi Woodcock re-arranged the CDMC Awards Night and it was then held at West Bradford Village Hall. An abso- Still Wittering lutely fabulous night (the bottom shuffle race and Mr.& Mrs for On & On & On Driver/Co-Driver was a right hoot) and even I managed to col- lected the odd pot too. Thursday the 6th and news starts to come through about the cancellation of the Riponian. Early on there were the expected outpourings of derision on social media but it must have been the correct decision and if the Landowners wont let you go out to play on their property then there is not a lot that you can do about it. On Saturday the 8th I head for North Wales to Penmachno for the Cambrian. Originally Penmachno was to be run twice but with entries not meeting the levels expected the organisers reduced the stage mileage and the second running of Clitheroe & DMC Awards Night Penmachno was cancelled. That meant I could then get back up North to Tebay and Marshal on Kirkby Lonsdale MCs Harry & Ivy Novice Road Rally. The Cambrian was dry in the main (well it was where I was) but running a day in front of the Riponian North Wales did not suffer from Storm Ciara until the following day. However, as seems the norm on the Cambrian, competitors seemed to be hell bent on chuck- ing their cars off the road at every opportunity. The rain brought in by ‘Storm Ciara’ certainly affected the Harry & Ivy. It was horrendous. At my first control I was stood in what seemed to be a river bed with water flowing well over the tops of my boots. Every time a car came into my control the water splashed even higher. Quite a few didn't finish - plenty of cars drowned out. At the fuel halt the organisers decided that everyone had suffered enough and called a halt to proceedings. (see Pages 20 & 21). I was very pleased to receive the phone call to abandon my second control and return to Tebay for a bacon buttie - I didn't bother to hang around for the full breakfast, choosing to go home and dry off and get some well needed beauty sleep (still cant see any improvement though). The following weekend I was going to go to the Wern Ddu Training weekend but Storm Denis was due to hit and after my experience with Storm Ciara on the Harry & Ivy Rally I decided that discretion might be the order of the day and decided not to go. Seems I missed a cracker of a weekends very realistic training, but I doubt the old hip could have lasted it out! Lancashire Automobile Club (1902) Ltd has been recognised by Motorsport UK as one of the oldest clubs in the country. Liverpool MC was also formed in 1902 and both clubs have received the right to display the new MSUK Centenary Club badge celebrating their 100 years plus. They also received a ‘Club Centenary Award’ (see right) Two Weekends of terrible weather and then I am off up to Northum- berland to marshal on the John Robson Road Rally - it couldn't do three in a row - could it? I left home at 2pm and it was hailing very heavily. On the M6 just after Junction 37 the traffic comes to a halt. Someone had been pushing on just a little bit too swiftly and was parked up the banking and there were several dented cars on the hard shoulder and odd bits of vehicle scat- tered across all three carriageways. The Emergency Services were on the scene very quickly and within ten minutes the road is reopened. When I arrive at the start venue the weather has improved no end, however by the time I got out marshalling it had gone downhill but no where near as bad as on the Harry & Ivy. Storm Ciara and storm Denis had a knock on effect on Clitheroe & DMCs Primrose Rally. I left it until the Thursday after Storm Ciara to go out and do my bit of PR but within two miles of the start of my section I had to abandon the task because of flooded roads. So my next trip out to do some PR the roads were impassable because of snow. I have just returned from my third attempt and I still have to go back to finish off my section because I ran out of PR letters. The good news is that (up to press) I have not had a single objection. G&PMC (page 20) have announced that they wont be running the Memorial Rally in 2020 but “This doesn’t mean the event has gone for good and that hopefully it will return in some guise or other.” By ‘other guise’ I am assuming that that means it could return as a Targa Rally. Fine by me if it does, however, what I personally wouldn't want to see is another Single Venue Multi-Test PCA. No matter what you call it or how you dress it up it would still be a Multi-Test PCA and not a Targa Rally! Inside the Industry with Paul Gilligan Aston Martin Rescued As discussed previously Aston Martin’s desperate need for cash brought two suitors to the table, Chinese company Geely who already own Volvo and Lotus, and a consortium led by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll. In the end Stroll who already owns F1 team Racing Point won and acquired a 17% stake in the company in exchange for an investment of £182 million which will be boosted by fresh investment from existing shareholders. This fresh cash should be enough to get Aston through until the point later this year when the new DBX SUV starts to generate sig- nificant profits. Racing Point will be rebranded as Aston Martin F1 although Aston will see out its contract to spon- sor Red Bull until the end of this year. Mr Stroll’s son Lance will continue to be one of the drivers for Racing Point. After that further funds are promised for the development of a mid engine two seat sports car to “go Ferrari hunt- ing”, and the introduction of hybrid and later pure electric models. Aston has been owned by a succession of rich men in the past including 1950s tractor tycoon David Brown and lat- er none other than Henry Ford, but all have got bored in the end with throwing money down what appeared to be a bottomless pit. Let’s hope Mr Stroll and his co-investors (who include Lord Bamford of JCB) have more stamina.

New Petrol, Diesel & Hybrid Cars To Be Banned From 2035 The industry had already been told that the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans would be banned in the UK from 2040. In early February the Government announced this would be brought forward to 2035 and would include hybrid cars as well. Then last week said they would advance the ban further to 2032 if possible. Industry reaction has been pretty consistent that the ban is simply unachievable, and that it isn’t currently supported by a detailed plan to make it happen. Industry heavyweights have cited the high cost of electric cars, the lack of re- charging points, shortage of raw materials to make batteries and the inability to generate the required electricity an- yway. Others have pointed to the lack of technicians trained to service and repair electric cars, only 5% of the cur- rent pool are currently so qualified. Electric cars being produced now normally use 400-600 volt systems and manu- facturers are working on 1000 volt systems. These things are simply lethal in untrained hands. The scale of the changes to the new car market needed to meet the target is simply amazing. Currently pure elec- tric cars represent 1.6% of sales. Of the 32.5M cars on UK roads only 155,000 or less than 0.05% are pure electric. If a smooth growth from 1.55 of the market if 2019 to 100% in 2035 is achieved then electric/hydrogen cars sales need to increase by 6.5% market share or around 160000 units every year for the next 15 years. So this year we need to go from last year’s 38000 sales to 200.000! And in 2021 to 360,000. Perhaps its understandable that peo- ple are sceptical. If the growth from 1.6% of sales to 100% over the next 15years is smooth then the industry will need to produce 17 million zero emission cars for the UK market in that time, over 1 million a year when last year the figure was 38000!

Tax Changes Needed To Support 2035 Ban Whilst bringing the ban date forward by 5, or maybe 8, years the Government hasn’t yet announced what it intends to do with the electric car and van grant which is due to expire at the end of march. This was cut in 2018 by £1000 per vehicle and hybrids previously included were excluded. The continuation if not increase in the grant is seen by many as a vital part of there being any chance of reaching the 2035 target. One thing that will boost the move to electric (or hydrogen) is the announcement that the Benefit In Kind (BIK) charge company car drivers pay will be reduced to zero for tax year 2020/21 if they choose a pure electric or hydro- gen car, as long as the operating range is at least 130 miles. Choosing zero emissions will save company car driv- ers broadly from £200 to £500 a month. This will put an enormous pressure on employers to provide those cars to their staffs, who will also benefit from reduced fuel costs for the private miles they pay for themselves. Companies can also benefit from attractive tax allowances when they but zero emission cars, for the present at least. However nobody has said yet what the Government intend to do to replace the fuel duty they currently collect from the sale of petrol and diesel. That was £28.4 Billion last year! Some form of road pricing seems inevitable? Continued on Page 48 Inside the Industry Continued from Page 47 Toyota Takes The Hydrogen Road Long Term Toyota pioneered the hybrid car and over half of their production of 9.5 million cars a year are now hybrids. They have taken 15 years to get to this point. In 2014 they launched their first hydrogen car and say the timescale will be similar, so expect hydrogen powered cars to be mainstream by the late 2020s. However the company has recog- nised he need to fill the gap between now and then and will be producing its first pure electric cars soon with ten models available in Europe by 2025. Toyota is clear that this to them is a temporary measure. Their Chairman re- cently said “Gasoline has been the primary fuel of the first 100 years of the car. Hydrogen will be the primary fuel for the next 100 years”.

Coronavirus Threat To Production The Coronavirus outbreak which started in China but is now spreading poses an enormous threat to the vehicle in- dustry. Many Chinese factories are closed or operating on a reduced basis . indeed Tesla who have been enjoying good news recently have been forced to close their Chines factory only weeks after it full opened. Now I’m not an expert in this but I’d be willing to bet that there isn’t a car produced in the World now that doesn’t have some components manufactured in China. Fiat Chrysler have already announced plans to close at least one of its European plants within a month because of these component shortages. Both Kia and Hyundai have put some of their South Korean factories on part time working. Just how bad this situation will become is impossible to fore- cast currently, but I’d say “very bad” is probably an understatement.

Self Driving Vehicles Progress The seemingly inevitable march to the self driving car has passed another few landmarks. Recently a Nissan Leaf completed a 230 mile journey in the UK without driver assistance at any point, although a human being was sat be- hind the wheel “just in case” as current laws demand. He was required when the electric Leaf had to stop to re- charge as at this stage of development it cannot safely cross a busy service station or locate a recharge point. Nev- ertheless a considerable achievement. Meanwhile in the US a self driving delivery vehicle is now operating in Houston Texas. Limited to 25 mph it takes groceries and take away food to customers who come out to the street when told the “van” is arriving and punch in a code to open the hatch and collect their goods. German industrial giant Bosch has announced it could launch an fully auotonomous car “tomorrow” and only obsta- cles are regulations and the scepticism of customers?

UK New Car Sales Off To A Bad Start As feared January brought no good news for UK manufacturers and dealers. New car sales were over 7% down on last January, itself well down on January 2018. Pure electric cars were over 200% up but still only 4000 sales or 2.7% of the total. Diesels fell to 20% of sales. These are frightening numbers for manufacturers and dealers alike. As ever some fared worse than others. Alfa Romeo were 32% down on last year, Citroen 22% down, Dacia 51% down, Hyundai 315 down, Kia 25% down, Mazda 26% down, Mini 33% down, 14% down, Ssangyong 51% down, 40% down and Vauxhall 25% down. Few were smiling. Audi did well at + 13%, Mitsubishi at +16%, Porsche at +10% and that’s about it. Amongst the tiddlers I can’t help wondering why they bother. Remember these figures include the registration of dealer and man- ufacturer staff cars, courtesy cars and demonstrators, Alpine registered 10 cars, Lotus 9, 49, and Ssan- gyong 103?

Falling New Car Sales Create Used Car Shortage As new car sales have slowed but used car demand has remained strong used car supply in the trade has become very tight indeed. Franchised dealers are hanging on to the lower number of part exchanges they take in to fill their own used car lots, leaving the independent trade fighting over what little is left. Inevitably the good old laws of sup- ply and demand have seen used values rise significantly. There are reports of traders paying over guide retail pric- es in the auctions just to get stock, how they them sell on at a profit is a mystery. Continued on Page 49 Inside the Industry Continued from Page 48

One large wholesaler I know who normally has over 12500 vehicles available currently has under 8000 and says they think the number will drop further. The rental and leasing companies who unload tens of thousands of cars a month are enjoying a bonanza. I was talking this week to a friend who manages a leasing fleet of 20000 vehicles and sells about 600 a month. I suggested he must be enjoying a windfall profit of about £300,000 a month just now. “More than that” he smiled.

Massive European Pre Registrations To Beat Emissions Deadline I reported last month on the new European regulations which came into force on January 1st this year requiring manufacturers to achieve an average emissions target of 95g/km or face massive fines. To reduce their exposure most pre registered many of their higher emission cars in December. Total registrations were 250.000 higher than in December 2018 and its thought pretty well all of these were actually unsold cars. Looking at the more “conventional” sales Tesla had another great month with its Model 3 becoming the 3rd best seller across Europe and outselling things like the VW Polo, Nissan Qashqai and Peugeot 208.

Brighton Goes Car Free Brighton and Hove Council want to ban cars from their town centre. That makes them just the latest town or city to take similar steps. Oxford plans to charge drivers of all but zero emission cars £10 to enter the centre, York intends to ban all private cars from the city centre within three years, and Cardiff will impose a £2 congestion charge. Others will no doubt follow.

Italians Pass The Test Research in Italy has shown that regions that have the highest rate of people passing their driving test first time also have the highest serious accident rates. Puzzling? So the best drivers have the most accidents? Most of these areas are in the south of the country where respect for things like laws and tax rules is low even by Italian standards. So the explanation is that learners fake their tests. In Sicily it was discovered that examiners would take the test themselves on behalf of the students – in exchange for 1600 euros of course. In Verona police found examiners tapping their pencils in written exams to give candi- dates clues to the correct answers. However it has also been suggested that relying on the accident statistics is unwise – many injuries are faked to boost insurance pay outs!

Uber Goes Electric – and Pushes For Self Driving Uber has just agreed a deal with Nissan for 2000 heavily discounted electric Leaf models for use by their drivers in London. They plan to have all their 45000 London drivers using electric cars by 2025. Then they intend to move as rapidly as possible to self driving cars as the drivers represent 75% of their costs!

Mercedes Profits Crash The costs of developing electric and self driving cars have caused a enormous drop in profits at Daimler, parent company of Mercedes. In 2018 the company made a profit of 7.7 Billion Euros, last year this fell to 2.7 Billion. The dividend has been cut by 72% to 90 cents a share. In 2017 Daimler made a profit of 10.6 Billion Euros and paid a dividend of 3.25 Euros a share. The company remains committed to development of electric and self driv- ing vehicles but big cost cuts in other areas are on the way. Whether the F1 programme survives remains to be seen but perhaps Lewis Hamilton has chosen the wrong time to ask for a big pay rise? Mercedes are fighting back with a massive new model programme, they intend to launch 32 new cars over the next 3 years. Many will be electric and hybrid, but equally many will be AMG performance cars.

Continued on Page 50 Inside the Industry Continued from Page 49 Alfa Romeo New Model Programme Some time ago I wrote about the massive new model programme Alfa had then just announced. I remember say- ing that I would believe it when I saw it because Alfa has made that sort of announcement before but failed to translate words into action. Sadly the same has happened again. After the untimely death of Fiat Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne things carries on as planned for a while then late last year the new model programme he’d ap- proved was slashed. Target changed from taking sales from 120,000 to 400,000. The new objective was to be “survival”. All that’s left is a facelift for the Giulia and the Stelvio for next year and two new cars for 2020 being the Tonale and a SUV smaller than the Stelvio. The Giulietta will be allowed to die and there is no longer any sign of a new Giulia. Following the merger with PSA future Alfas will share their underpinnings with , Citroens, Vauxhalls and as well as Fiats of course. High performance versions like the Giulia Quadrifoglio will not be replace the hope being that alfa cus- tomers looking for more powerful and more expensive cars will look to Maserati although it seems more likely to me that something German is more likely? [email protected] www.gilliganvehicleconsulting.co.uk 07785 293222 NORTHERN CLASSIC TRIAL 22nd February In the last three weeks I should have been involved competing at two sporting trials with those rather strange little cars that can climb very steep muddy hills having “fiddle” brakes to con- trol wheelspin on each rear wheel, I also agreed to help on the Fellside Auto clubs famous Northern Trial but all have been cancelled owing to the weather either because the inces- sant rain has made the venues just too difficult to access, or it would destroy the farmers fields travelling over the ground or as was the case with the Northern trial the excessive wind speed made it too dangerous to allow people into the forests. I never realised until the Northern trial was cancelled that For- est Enterprise who own the local forests won’t allow anyone into their forests, or take part in any activity that takes place in their forests if the wind speed is forecast to be in excess of 47MPH. This of course affects lots of people in their cho- sen sports and hobbies such as mountain biking, walking, ori- enteering , watching the night sky in darkness as well as rallies and trials, you can’t even go to the Whinlatter visitor centre for lunch or just a coffee because they close off their car park be- cause of health and safety regulations. I gather they generally try to make the decision 24 hours prior to events but as competitors and marshals were going to travel from all over the country to the Northern the organisers had to make their call on the Tuesday as the winds were forecast to be over 50mph all week. As it happened they made the right call as the winds never really abated and on Saturday it was a very wild day indeed. What a pity when you saw all the work that has gone into put- ting on the trial. In the past I personally have organised many events but a long time ago I must add, autocross, trials, rallies etc but although there were lots of forms to fill in and permits to apply for I just couldn’t believe how many more things had to be done to put on an event these days primarily in case anyone was involved in an accident. I didn’t know that now the whole country is divided up into squares and not just given a grid reference as in the past that cover a 100 x 100 metre square but each little square is given a 3 word unique reference, the organisers had to issue every- one concerned with running the event various lists one of which I’ve copied from the Fellside clubs instructions. Just im- agine how much extra work this involved the small band of he- roes that made everything ready for the event to run then had it taken away from them. Each observed section is given a map reference and a grid square as is normal then in case of accident the ambulance services have to be given a meeting point where to access the forest which is a very sensible thing to do of course. All map references are given what is known as “what3words” so for instance the Routen Romp section has a meeting point for first aid vehicles at MR NY2041330613 which is the forestry work- shops at Peil Wyke and the “what3words identifying that partic- ular location are update.highlight.refreshed. Continued on Page 52 Norther Classic Trial Continued from Page 51 How on earth anyone thought of all these random names is mind boggling in itself, just imagine all the work typing out all these additional details in order to run a non -speed event alt- hough of course I am aware that serious accidents can occur on non- speed events. There were sheets of papers listing first aiders, sector control- lers and marshals, hill chiefs and a superb road book that was far better that the RAC or any other national or international rally I have competed on or been involved with. I have competed on the Northern as a driver with my Buckler several times and managed a couple of class wins, I have been fortunate to win the event outright without losing any marks at all and clearing every single hill passengering a friend of mine in a car that was very specialised and set up to the applicable regulations, I have marshalled and helped prior to events cutting down overhanging branches, moving danger- ous logs etc but even with that level of involvement I never realised how much work these events really entailed, I take my hat off to organisers and wish to thank you all for all the work put in over the years from all the competitors, marshals and spectators. Having our sport disrupted does seem to be a big issue to us all at the time but having looked at the TV news at all the unfortunate people having their homes and businesses destroyed by flooding due to horrendous weather condi- tions makes one put things into perspective. Many peoples livelihoods depend on sport or leisure be it F1, WRC, International football, rugby, tennis etc, holidays abroad or even in this country, with Coronavirus getting worse all the time It is a frightening time, to make it worse poor people all over the world in Syria, Yemen and other places have no food, had theirs homes destroyed, their families killed and suffer horrible death and malnutrition so we mustn’t think we have had a bad time considering what others have to put up with. Keith Thomas. NPTCC Stuart Butterfield Memorial trial & the Stone Trough trial 2 day event Edenhall, Penrith. March 14th & 15th It's the Stuart Butterfield Memorial trial & the Stone Trough trial. I am Clerking both days. Both events are Club, BTRDA & MSA rounds and as an add- ed twist it's the 2nd round of the English vs Irish match. However many Irish visitors come over, say 9, (promised), our top 9 English competitors scores are to count. If there are 8 then it's our top 8 etc etc. We were beaten on it's debut round in Ireland last year so we have to try harder We've missed a few events this year because of the weather but this place has got to be as "weather-proof" as it gets, if its wet - no problem, if its windy - no problem, Snow ? we'll work round it. There was another organisation wanting the venue on the same weekend but the landowner kindly let us have it as we were first so it has to run come what may. So get your entries in asap, the forms are out and on our website where you can enter online www.nptcc.org if you can't compete please come along and marshal, 2 per hill would be very nice. The Irish are coming to support it so lets make their journey worth while. Martin Grimood FIESTA R2: John Easson winner Ewan Tindall’s Weapon of Choice

To mount a serious challenge for any rally championship, you need a serious car. And for 2020, Ewan will be be- hind the wheel of a Fiesta R2, sourced from KG Motor- sport in Northern Ireland. That represents a big step-up for the ambitious youngster from Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, who had previously contested the BTRDA Fiesta ST Tro- phy in an old-shape model. “We had a very successful debut year in 2018 with the ST in which we finished on the podium on every round we did, and we wanted to do the same in 2019,” explained Ewan. “But it didn’t quite go to plan, and only had one outing on the Jack Frost Stages in January. We got as far as stage seven when the two centre driveshafts broke. Our pace was good, but I think it was apparent that the car was lagging behind in development, compared with newer Fiestas. After the rally, my dad and I made the decision that we needed an R2 car to be com- petitive, so we reluctantly decided to sell the car and start saving!” After a quiet year on the sidelines, Ewan and his dad Lee spent a long time waiting for the right R2 car to come up for sale. “We had a look at a Citroen C2R2, but the car to have is a Fiesta, and luckily for us, a good one came up at KG Motorsport. It has a proven track record, having been built by M-Sport and used by Tom Williams on selected WRC and European Championship events, and it came with the right spares package, which is important. The biggest challenge for me, aside from the extra power, is that the car is left-hand-drive, which will take a bit of get- ting used to, especially as our pace increases, and the sequential gearbox. We took the car out for the first time – I’d only driven it up the road and back – on the Christ- mas Stages at Croft and it was very impressive. Although we retired with a broken gearstick, the seven stages we did was enough to convince us we had the right car for 2020.” NESCRO Historic Motorsport In The North Of & Scotland 2020 Calendar & Challenge Rounds

The new stands looked fantastic and the feedback was positive. The new BRMC logo looks great and the Teamwear smart - great idea by Kim Durose. Congratulations too to Ian Evans who was awarded the inaugural Rally Marshal of the Year trophy too. Teamwear is now available to purchase with the BRMC logo direct from the supplier, details via the BRMC website here—https://www.brmc.org.uk/images/pdfs/Regalia/BRMC_Team_Catalogue.pdf I also have to take this opportunity to thank Eric Ridler for his previous 20 years of supporting and setting up our stand at the Autosport show. This year certainly felt like we made our mark! Motorsport UK attended our BRMC trophy presentation and Jayne Poston, Oliver Anslow and I had an interview session on their stand on the Saturday afternoon. I also made a couple of presentations to tell people what we do. Better advertising next year could make this a real feature. Our next show is Race Retro at the end of this month. If you are able to support any recruiting activities in your area please contact your local recruitment officer – they will welcome the help! Our membership packs will be shipping out shortly – this is a huge job for one person (thanks Dave!) so please be patient. Renewals need to be submitted by end of March to be in with a chance of winning our star prize of a drive at Bedford Autodrome courtesy of MSV. (You will need to make your own way there and meet an MSV representative to accept your prize). Your pack will also include important information about our Employee Assistance Programme. Motorsport UK are shortly releasing a survey to understand exactly what encourages people to volunteer. I urge you to answer as honestly as possible for all roles you perform (questions repeat for different areas) – this will help shape some of the work of the Marshals Advisory Group in ensuring recruitment, retention, recognition and welfare of mar- shals is a paramount in the activities governed by Motorsport UK. We are also looking to simplify the understanding and documentation associated with the grading scheme – a key area for the group this year! So watch this space and input your ‘constructive’ ideas (we know what the issues are!). A gentle reminder about Social Media guidelines - https://www.motorsportuk.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/motorsportuksocialmediapolicyandguidance.pdf What you may think is a harmless comment or joke can be seen as disrespectful, threatening or quite simply a whinge! Many organisations monitor all forms of Social Media and aren’t always supportive or tolerant. Please be mindful that new, young marshals could be easily influenced by your “views” and may not get the full picture. If you have genuine issues or concerns please raise through the relevant channels and not on a public forum. Your local committees (and up to me) want to hear from you to make our lot a better place. BMMC 2020 Insurance Policies Details of our Personal Accident policy are available to view – https://www.marshals.co.uk/marshalling/bmmc-personal-accident-insurance All members are encouraged to volunteer using our online system as this automatically records your attendance for insurance purposes. If you volunteer direct to the organising club you will still be covered, but to make sure we know what meetings you are doing please tick the “for insurance purposes only” box in the online system or send your Volunteering Coordina- tor a list of all the meetings you want insurance cover for, making clear you have already volunteered via the organis- ing club. Details of the BMMC Emergency Medical Repatriation policy and how to arrange cover are available to view online https://www.marshals.co.uk/marshalling/repatriation-insurance Our first Council meeting of the year is approaching so I must complete my report and prepare for new ideas and de- cision making. Let your regional Chairs know what we should be working on.

Motorsport UK New Licences I am finally getting my head round the licencing situa- tion and event status. ... for competitor licences it's actually quite simple - if you're restricting your activity to Autotest, PCA, Autoso- los and Trials then the RS Clubman licence is all you need - and it's FREE. Also covers Clubman status ral- lies. If you're doing rallies (other than Clubman ones), Sprints or Hillclimbs then you need the RS Interclub licence. Dave Thomas

The Facebook page will be the prime method of communication for the rally. The intention* is to hold the 2020 Mull Classic Rally on 14th March 2020 with a format similar to the 2018 Mull Targa Rally - i.e. tests and regularities making good use of the best forest roads on the island. The event is being held jointly with the Mull Car Club annual dinner dance ceilidh and will be based at the Isle of Mull Hotel & Spa in Craignure. We look forward to welcoming you to the Isle of Mull for an enjoyable and laid-back event with maximum opportunities for socialising. The origins of the Mull Classic Rally lie with the unfortunate cancellation of the 2017 and 2018 Beatson’s Mull Rally – a full-blown and epic stage rally which used closed public roads on Mull. In lieu of those events, the Beatson’s Mull Targa Rally was organised and was well-received. The Mull Classic Rally is the evolution of the Targa, and will follow roughly the same format as the 2018 Targa Rally. We are very grateful for the support of Mull Hire - the proprietor Allan Cameron is a well-known competitor and a key member of the Mull Rally team, as well as being the 2018 Mull Targa Rally Manager. The Mull Hire premises is on the rally route in Salen - you can't miss it so give them a toot (and buy something). www.facebook.com/mullclassicrally ADGESPEED Unit 14, Thames Trading Centre, Woodrow Way, Irlam Manchester.
