Radio España Independiente, La Pirenaica: the Voice of the Victims of the Franco Regime Sociology Study, October 2014, Vol. 4, No. 10, 859‐868 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2014.10.004 DAVID PUBLISHING Radio España Independiente, La Pirenaica: The Voice of the Victims of the Franco Regime Armand Balsebrea, Rosario Fontovaa Abstract Radio España Independiente (REI) (1941‐1977), La Pirenaica, was the repository for the public remembrance of the victims of the Franco regime, through letters that its listeners regularly sent to the broadcaster’s headquarters in Bucharest. A study of the 15,500 letters contained in the Spanish Communist Party’s (PCE) Historical Archive in Madrid confirms this broadcaster’s major role in the construction of the mythical symbolic image of the anti‐Franco movement. Beyond their function as propaganda instruments of the PCE, La Pirenaica’s letters reveal the radio station’s role as a vehicle for the expression of public solidarity and ideological and cultural resistance. La Pirenaica was the voice of the defeated after the Spanish Civil War, and was their confidante and advisor. Farm animals are kept to provide food such as meat, milk, eggs, honey and other products of animal origin such as wool, hides, skins, etc. The opening of the European internal market in 1992 facilitated the trade in live animals and products of animal origin in the European Union. Since then, the global trade has increased, however, so has the risk of spreading infectious animal diseases. Consumer demands of different consumer sections are changing and become more and more specific which results in different requirements for animal production and products of animal origin. Above all, consumers want high-quality but reasonably priced food. Thus process quality is affected, too. At the same time consumers in developed countries are increasingly questioning the ethical acceptability of some animal production systems and now include animal welfare as a benchmark for assessing standards and livestock farmers must increasingly take animal protection and animal welfare aspects into account Animal production is not only impacted by changing environmental conditions but also has an impact on the environment in turn, notably through emissions, including odors, greenhouse gases, bioaerosols and particulate matter. International negotiations have resulted in the introduction of limitations for different areas with a view to curbing or reducing the rise in temperatures through climate change and the production of greenhouse gases. This also concerns the agricultural sector, and animal production in particular. These global challenges must be faced and for this reason, we must also reduce emissions from animal production such as nitrogen oxides or methane from cattle farming.

Bruna dels Pirineus bulls achieved high growth rates during the fattening period (1.63 kg/day) and showed good carcass quality, with a high dressing-out proportion (607 g/kg, hot carcass), a good conformation score (U; EUROP) and a moderate fatness score (3;1–5).

Producció Animal ETSEA, Universitat de Lleida (Catalunya, SPAIN) [email protected] RESUMEN La raza bovina “Albera” es una raza catalana, de efectivos reducidos, localizada en el E de los Pirineos. A pesar de ser bastante numerosos los estudios científicos realizados en la raza, sobretodo en el campo genético, no se disponen de datos sobre su aptitud sarcopoiética. En este breve artículo presentamos los datos comerciales de una canal procedente de un añojo castrado de esta raza, comparándolos con los de otras razas cebadas por el mismo ganadero. La canal “Alberesa” presenta una conformación R y un estado de engrasamiento de 3, y un buen peso canal en caliente, incluso superior al de las razas comparadas. Sería interesante aprovechar más los datos comerciales que pueden recogerse en los mataderos, para cualquier raza de efectivos reducidos, por ser los verdaderos indicadores del valor comercial de una raza. PALABRAS CLAVE: canal | bovino | matadero ABSTRACT The "Albera" bovine is a Catalan breed, with a reduced census, that is located in the E of the Pyrenees. In spite of quite numerous scientific studies about the breed, mainly genetic ones, little information is available on its meat aptitude. In this brief paper we present the commercial information of a carcass from a castrated yearling of this breed, including a comparison with those from of other races fattened by the same farmer.

LIU Laboratory of Molecular Biology & Animal Breeding, School of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan, P.R.China Genetic variability has to be taken into account to guide genetic conservation programs. This study was conducted to determine the genetic variation between five Chinese indigenous goat breeds by using microsatellites from cattle and sheep. Blood samples from five Chinese indigenous goat breeds, Liaoning cashmere (33), Inner Mongolian cashmere (35), Tibetan cashmere (37), Wuan cashmere (49), and Matou goats for meat production (39) from Hubei province, were collected from random individuals. Fifteen pairs of microsatellite primers from cattle (BM1842, BM4621, BM6444, BM6506, BM757) and sheep (OarCP20, OarCP34, OarCP49, OarFCB11, OarFCB11, OarFCB128, OarFCB20, OarFCB266, OarFCB304, OarFCB48, MAF33, McM218) were tested to detect polymorphisms among those breeds. More than four alleles were found at six loci (BM4621, OarCP34, OarFCB11,OarFCB20, OarFCB304, OarFCB48) and generated a total of 57 alleles from the 5 breeds and 193 individuals analyzed. The other nine microsatellites were not used to assess genetic diversity because they were monomorphism or produced non-specific bands. Within-breed variation was analyzed. Heterozygosity, polymorphism information content and effective allele number had similar tendencies among breeds; Taihang had the highest values, followed by Neimonggol, Liaoning, Matou, and Tibetan breeds, in that order. Total gene diversity, average heterozygosity within each population, and coefficients of gene differentiation between breeds were calculated. The mean values of the three parameters are 0.831, 0.800, 0.038, respectively.
