Δώσαμε και τίτλο στην έκθεση στο Δημοτικό Κέντρο Τεχνών (Παλιά Ηλεκτρική) στη Λευκωσία: «Where do we go from here?» Παττίχης Εκδότης Δημοσιογραφικός Οργανισμός «Ο Φιλελεύθερος» I have given just one interview in my life and that was about art. It took place exactly four years ago, and was given to mark the first exhibition of some of the artworks I have been acquiring for years and which, for the first time in April 2008, we named “Collection”. We gave that exhibition of predominantly Cypriot artists that was held at the Municipal Arts Centre (the Old Powerhouse) the title “Where do we go from here?” There was anxiety in the question at the time, but also hope, driven by our shared faith in this country’s contemporary art as well as its future in Cyprus. But in this very brief period, this same island of promise has come to this. How is it that thousands of years later we have ended up becoming an unknown destination, a utopia, yet again? Our history captured in just a few words: “Come, we came, welcome, here we are - we like it - get to work, we have worked.” Will we ever be in control of our future? No. Apparently not even today. We all know full well that the unworthy and incompetent are at the helm once again. It’s ugly and nasty. And this is what the artists describe through their creativity and work; this is what is imprinted on the wall that we are up against. Entitled “Utopia”, this exhibition featuring new works from the collection, is curated by Elena Parpa and Maria Stathi and presented at the Evagoras Lanitis Centre in Limassol. I would like to thank the Lanitis family for the invitation and honour. My thanks also to my home town Limassol, which stands alone in delivering lessons on “how to make the Utopia of the poets, philosophers and Greats a reality”. The quest. The destination, fulfilled. And a starting point to the future. Nicos Chr. Pattichis Publisher Phileleftheros Publishing Group Within ten years of its establishment, the Evagoras Lanitis Centre has succeeded in establishing itself as one of the leading art centres, organising exhibitions that aim to promote Cyprus cultural heritage and art. The collaboration between the Evagoras and Kathleen Lanitis Foundation and Mr. Nikos Chr. Pattichis, the most important art collector in Cyprus, who truly believes in the exceptional artistic quality and value of Cypriot contemporary creation, gives the Lanitis Centre the opportunity to present a significant part of his unequalled collection. This exhibition offers the general public an ideal opportunity to get to know the dynamics of the contemporary creations of the new generation of artists, who, through their works, express their concerns regarding modern societies, which are in great turmoil and in the process of a complete transformation. Παναγιώτης Μιχαήλ The subject matter developed in the exhibition under the title “Utopia” should Stand Home Stand not be associated only with the notion of “non-realisable”, namely something 2009 - 2010 that can only exist in one’s imagination, nor simply with the “utopia” which 3D animation, μονοκάναλο με ήχο is to be found within the confined boundaries of history’s horizon. 5 λεπτά 27 δευτεπόλεπτα In fact, the body of the works presented in the exhibition refers to a world Edition of 5; 1/5 beyond the boundaries of the world, and to the original meaning of the word “utopia”, which is none other than the successful effort of imagination Panayiotis Michael to explore and represent the “realisable”. CHRISTODOULOS PANAYIOTOU Born 1978 in Limassol, Cyprus. Lives and works in Berlin, Germany Originally trained in dance and performing arts in Lyon and London Christodoulos Panayiotou’s works are performance-based and collectively span every level of what one could describe as a spectrum of the performative in art – from creating a space for an activity such as dancing, directing actors and events, to the recording and tracing of both the artist’s and society’s ‘performances’. Formed in a range of media, often incorporating video and sound within installation Panayiotou’s aesthetic interventions often reference political stimuli and yet can be read in a multitude of ways. In 2005 Panayiotou won the 4th DESTE Prize from the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Athens, Greece. He has recently exhibited in The Museum Of Modern Art Oxford, UK, 2006; The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens, 2007; Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center Istanbul, 2006; and Den Frie, Copehagen, 2007. November Paynter, Taipei Biennale catalogue, 2008 Christodoulos Panayiotou is an artist who incisively explores the complex interconnections between our most innate desires and their cultural constructions. From fighter planes and fireworks to yesterday´s confetti and songs whose lyrics we are almost embarrassed to know by heart, Panayiotou crafts concise videos, objects and ephemeral situations that reveal a playful wit and an eye for the sex appeal and abstract beauty of our everyday world. At once ironic yet tender, analytic but deeply felt, his work is that of a savvy cultural consumer who is not afraid – every now and then – to fall for the very romantic myths and pop productions he so deftly probes.
