    BLACK RHYTHM, WHITE POWER SAMANTHA AINSLEY Introduction and All that Jazz he lights went down at the Miller Theater, but not a note was played. Then a voice rose above the muffled sounds of the crowd, followed by another, and T then another: Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, interlaced with words by Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. The three men’s tones resonated with the rhythm of the African djembe beating in the backdrop. Soon, Christian McBride’s anticipated bass riff joined the refrain. The great speeches faded along with the drum line, and the jazz took hold, as was permissible since the foundation had been laid: Jazz is a music, a history, a culture. That is, African American culture is intrinsic to jazz. The music has its roots in post-Reconstruction New Orleans, at a time when Jim Crow laws lumped Creoles and blacks into one marginalized subgroup. Jazz evolved as a synthesis of “African-derived rhythmic, tonal, and improvisational senses” and French-inspired Creole string ensembles (Hall 36). The word “jazz,” in fact, derives from the Creole jass, a slang term for sex. Granted, Creoles are light-skinned and hardly black in the usual sense of the word. To that Perry Hall, director of African American studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, adds, “Creole participation in jazz came directly as a result of the discovery by Creole musicians of their Blackness” (47). In other words, Creoles began to play jazz after relocation to and degradation in the United States made them party to the black experience.

    Peter Szok Renato Sets It Straight: An Interview on the Diffuse Roots of Reggaeton Texas Christian University, EE.UU. [email protected] Introduction An intense debate has arisen over the last decade regarding the origins and the development of reggaeton. As Wayne Marshall notes in a recent publication, the discussion has often taken on a heated and “linear” quality, with participants linking the genre’s spectacular emergence to pre- existing, nationalist narratives, while ignoring its global and fluid character, the “migration” of its artists, and the “reach of the media” which impacts its subjects simultaneously in various regions (Marshall 22). Puerto Ricans have most successfully produced this dance music which draws heavily on aspects of commercialized African diasporic culture and which is now heard and performed across Latin America, the United States, Europe, and many other parts of the world. As a result, they and others tend to present the rhythm as having come “straight outta Puerto Rico,” as implied in a 2008 documentary which ties reggaeton’s rise to the island’s youth and popular culture (Savidge and Chankin). However, Panamanian musicians are equally adamant that the musical form is essentially their creation and that its roots lie firmly in the traditions of the isthmus’ Afro-Antillean population. “We invented it in Panama,” insisted salsero Rubén Blades, during a press conference in Puerto Rico, while serving as his country’s Minister of Tourism. Speaking in what might be regarded as enemy territory, Blades identified reggaeton as part of his republic’s patrimony, and he called on Panamanians to abandon any prejudices and to recognize its importance in their society (“Rubén Blades” s.p.).

It’s so elegant and cool and -fashionable. —Nile Rodgers to Bernard Edwards, cofounders of -Chic isco snuck up on America like a covert operation. This wasn’t how it had been in the sixties, when shifts in popular music—the arrival of the mop-headed British Invasion bands, Bob Dylan’s galvanizing electric turn, the emergence of Dpsychedelic rock—were unmissable cultural events immediately accorded the status of milestones. The rock “ revolution” of the sixties, like the Vietnam War and the protests it provoked, was the object of intense media coverage. Newsweek, Life, Time, and all the rest pounced on the story with prairie-fire speed. In a blink, whole new publications, including that soon-to-be arbiter of countercultural taste, Rolling Stone, emerged to chronicle the music, personalities, and culture of rock. The major labels may have been bewildered by the scruffiness, long hair, and druggy vibe of groups such as Big Brother and the Holding Company and the Grateful Dead, but they barely paused before racing to sign them up, even when they were little known outside of San Francisco’s hippie enclave, Haight--Ashbury. Six years later, when another musical revolution was taking shape, record companies opened neither their arms nor their coffers, with the result that disco developed slowly and at first largely off the official map. By the time Vince Aletti wrote about what he called “party music” and “discotheque rock,” in a fall 1973 issue of Rolling Stone, gay men had been dancing in discos for three years.
