Leader’s welcome The Lexicon rises to 29th

Hello and welcome to the summer best shopping destination edition of Town & Country. As we’re well into the summer months ahead of next chapter it’s a great time to see what’s going on in the borough as well as to refect on the busy start to the year we’ve had.

As you will have seen on the front page, the people of Bracknell Forest showed their party spirit in June when we celebrated Bracknell’s 70th birthday. It was great to see everyone come together and get involved at the Community Day and to see people sharing their fond memories of Bracknell. I’m very proud of how far Bracknell has come in its 70 years, especially our town centre. As you’ll see in the story to the right, The Lexicon has been ranked number 29 by industry experts for best shopping destination in the UK. This is a huge step up from our ranking of 255 in 2017! I’m sure residents are also as excited as I am to see what’s in store for the next couple of Following the announcement of the next major milestone in Bracknell town phases of regeneration, which will include the development of The centre’s regeneration, Bracknell Regeneration Partnership (BRP) will be Deck and the remodelling of Princess Square. sharing more information with residents regarding the next wave of the town’s overall regeneration during the summer months. Now the elected council is in place, work to create a new council plan is underway; it will refect the Conservative party manifesto and give the council a clear direction of travel for the next four years. A copy of the plan will be available for residents to view this autumn. We’ve included a guide to your elected borough councillors on page fve.

As well as a busy start to the year, we also have an event-flled summer to look forward to in the borough. There are a number of events and activities going on in our local parks, libraries and town centre across the summer months. Take a look at some of the events highlighted on page eight.

On a fnal note, don’t forget that in between the hard copy editions of Town & Country, we send out a monthly electronic version called Town & Country Extra so you can keep up-to-date with news and updates. Sign up for Town & Country Extra by visiting: http://bit.ly/TCExtra.

I hope you enjoy this edition of Town & Country and look forward to seeing you out and about enjoying all that Bracknell Forest has to offer over the summer months.

However, older adults, young children and those with heart and lung conditions can all find normal activities a strain when temperatures rise. Older adults’ bodies may not recognise an increase in body temperature, meaning they may not take appropriate action to cool down. Children are not able to regulate their core temperature as well as adults as their regulation system has not yet fully matured. Chereliss/iStock/Getty Images Plus

Tips for coping in hot weather • close windows and pull down the shades when it is hotter outside. Re-open when it is cooler • stay out of the sun, particularly between 11am and 3pm • keep rooms cool by using shades or reflective material outside the windows. If this isn’t possible, use light-coloured curtains and keep them closed (metallic blinds and dark curtains can make the room hotter) • have cool baths or showers and splash yourself with cool water • drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol – water, lower-fat milks and tea and coffee are good options • identify the coolest room in the house so you know where to go to keep cool • wear loose, cool clothing, and a hat and sunglasses if you go outdoors • check up on friends, relatives and neighbours who may be less able to look after themselves. To keep up-to-date with heatwave health warnings this summer search ‘Met Office heat health watch’ online or listen to alerts on the radio, TV and social media. FamVeld/iStock/Getty Images Plus
