Australian National Teams BASKETBALL QUEENSLAND Tuesday 18th May Edition 10 Australian National Teams COMING UP: Australian Opals: Want to support the Australian Opals on their quest for ThanksWestern to Magicall of Daythe Girls Gold & to defend their World Champion Title?? The 2010 FIBA World th Camp- 6 June & Championships will be taking place in the Czech Republic from September 23rd to October 3rd. There are 2 supporters tour packages on offer include Slumber Party Camp- 12th-13th June tour guides, flights, tickets, supporters gear & much more. Check out the Basketball Australia website for more info; www.basketball.net.au Girls with Game Development Clinic- th The Australian U19 Gems will shortly be embarking on a tour to France in Caboolture- 12 June which they will take part in two international tournaments. The first is in Noosa Girls with Game Reze from the 24th-27th June and the second in Troyes July 2nd-4th. The th Development Camp 26 team consists of one Queensland player Jillian Haughton from Townsville June who was also in the World Championship winning team last year. The two tournaments will help prepare the team for their upcoming world Blades Basketball th championship qualifying tournament in September when they must beat Holiday Camp 30 June New Zealand in the 2010 FIFA Oceania U19 Championship. South Qld Female Referee Development Australian U17 Women: Basketball Australian has just recently announced Camp 27-29 September the 12 athletes that will compete at the U17 Women’s World Titles from July 16-25 in Toulouse and Rodez, France. The team features one athlete with previous experience on the world stage, forward Gretel Tippett who was a member of the Australian U19 Women’s team that finished fifth at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championships for Women. KRISTEN VEAL PERSONAL: DOB 24/07/1981, Height: 176cm POSITION: Guard JUNIOR ASSOCIATION: Norwood Flames (SA) FIRST PLAYED WNBL: 1997 WNBL CLUBS: AIS 1997-99; Canberra 1999-04; Sydney 2005/06 - 2008, Logan 2008/09 - Current INTERNATIONAL GAMES: 61 games (26 Junior), (35 Senior), Junior World Championships 1997 (Silver) WNBL CAREER NOTES: In the 2008/09 season four-time WNBL champion Kristen was named Logan Thunder’s Most Valuable Player after captaining the team to finish 8th in their first season in the league. Kristen averaged 9.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and4.5 assists last season. Originally an AIS player, Kristen averaged 8.6 points and 3.6 assists for the 2006/07 season. She is a former WNBA player with the Phoenix Mercury. In the 2003/04 season, she was named a WNBL Ambassador and was a member of the WNBL All-Star Five. She has led the WNBL in assists in the following years: 1998, 1998/99, 1999/00 and 2002/03. In the 2002/03 season, she averaged a career-high 5.4 assists per game (114 all up). The first of her four WNBL titles came in the 1998/99 season before successive titles with Canberra in the 1999/00 and 2000/01 seasons, and her fourth in 2002/03. GENERAL BASKETBALL CAREER NOTES: Kristen was selected 13th pick in the 2001 WNBA draft by Phoenix and played with the Mercury in 2001/02 - at the same time becoming the youngest player to play in the league. She represented SA U16, U18 and U-20 at Nationals. Nominate now for term 2!! CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS FOR TERM 2, 2010 Kayla Beverley Kayla is currently playing U12’s & U14’s Club, Representative & State Schools basketball. Kayla enjoys playing basketball because she has made some great friends, its challenging, keeps her fit & its fun! Kayla’s coach says she is a team player who always gives 100%. She consistently performs well at training and always listens. Her favourite player is Lauren Jackson and her goals in basketball are to make future representative teams at Northside wizards as well as to play in America. Kayla’s favourite playing moment was at 2010 U12 State Championships when her team was down by 20 points at ¾ time and then they fought back hard to win by 5!!! ☺ Kelly has been refereeing for the last 4 years because she wanted to Kelly Bamforth learn more about the game. She also enjoys refereeing as it gives her the opportunity to help out the younger players and teach them the rules. Kelly is currently refereeing the senior Men’s & Women’s leagues at South West basketball Association as well as juniors including BQJBC at the U12’s State Championships. Kelly takes pride in her refereeing appearance and always takes charge on the court. Kelly also assists the junior referees but always ensures she listens & takes in the knowledge given from the senior referees. Great work Kelly! Courtney Murphy Courtney started playing basketball 5 years ago because the rest of her family played. Courtney is currently playing U12 Local & Representative level basketball with her favourite players being Michael Jordan & Lauren Jackson. She loves competing at a high level & enjoys the social environment in which she gets to make long term friends.

The QBL and D League teams did us proud with all 4 teams almost managing to make finals if it wasn't for one or two results going against the Caps. A big Congratulations to the D League Brisbane Capitals Women who were able to return to the Grand Final this year only to have Ipswich scrape home with a 4 point win after the Caps trailed by as many 20 points at the half. We welcome Don McCarron to the BBI ranks as he replaces Dave Mitchell in the role of Female Development Manager for the upcoming 2012/2013 repre- sentative season. Dave did a tremendous job in keeping the female program moving forward and developing our junior female athletes. Our U14 Brisbane Capitals Gold Boys will travel to Perth in a month’s time to compete at the Australian U14 Boys Club Championships we wish Penny and the boys all the best for the Championships.

    New Basketball Queensland High Performance Program Since 1994, the National Intensive Training Centre Program (NITCP) has been the flagship of elite junior athletic and coach development in Queensland. The aim of the program is to develop players for selection into the AIS and National Junior Teams, (Emus & Gems) with a Vision of equipping the athletes with the skills to compete successfully in the National Basketball League, Women's National Basketball League and the Australian National Teams (Opals & Boomers) in the future. With a strong commitment to the elite holistic development of our junior athletes, the program has garnered much success. NITCP Athletes have gone on to represent various NBL & WNBL teams; AIS Programs; Junior & Senior National Representation (Incl Opals & Boomers); as well as Division 1 US Colleges. Athletes call a wide variety of associations home, including: Brisbane; Cairns; Gold Coast; Ipswich; Logan; Mackay; Maroochydore; Northside; Rockhampton; Southern Districts; South West; Toowoomba & Townsville. The NITCP also provides unique Coach Development pathways providing our Elite Junior Athlete Coaches with opportunities to progress to National League Teams and Programs. The NITCP has been instrumental at providing Queensland Coaches with the necessary professional sports program skills, to compete at the elite junior level but also catapulting them to the ranks of the NBL & WNBL as well as National Programs and Australian Junior Teams: Mick Downer (Perth Wildcats); Dale Ryan (Brisbane Bullets); Paul Goriss (AIS & Australian Under 18 Mens); Dale Waters (Dandenong Rangers); Peter Buckle (Townsville Fire); David Mitchell (Logan Thunder) & Patrick Brady, Annette Winton & Nikki Bairstow (Townsville Fire). Until the end of 2008, the NITCP was delivered on behalf of Basketball Australia by the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS) in conjunction with Basketball Queensland (BQ); however, due to the QAS shift in focus to Senior Elite Sport, (Olympic & World Championship athletes) 2009 sees the delivery of the NITCP move back to BQ.
