CAMP H.M. SMITH, Hawaii- For the second time this year it was road dust and not office dust that buffed the boots of more than 160 H&S Bn. Marines and sailors who stepped out June 23, for what has become a quarterly foot march. The Marines and Navy corpsmen hiked a combined 10-mile course through NS Pearl Harbor and Hickam AFB. The force march fulfills one of the Marine Corps Battle Skills Training requirements, but is also intended to provide the servicemembers, who come from a diverse group of military operational specialities and operational commitments, a chance to train together. "Every Marine is a rifleman first, regardless of where they work," Battalion Commander Col. B.M. Youngs explained. "Physical conditioning such as a force march gives Marines confidence and helps to provide them with a realistic view of what most combat units do routinely," Youngs added. For young Marines like LCpI. Cynthia Cooper, Force Engineer Branch, the foot march was both exciting and motivating. "Training events such as this hike may not seem challenging to other headquarters elements, but it's not only the physical challenge of the force march, but the camaraderie that is established during such an exercise that provides a sense of unity within the command," she explained. While Youngs said he does not intend to increase the distance of the foot marches in the near future, he does Ther.0 ArittlOny plan to increase the load the Marines carry. The next Picking up the pace for the final half mile, Marines ended the 10-mile foot march in traditional doubletime fashion. foot march is scheduled for October.

Last year, North and South Korea began high-level talks, but if the North is suspected of continuing its nuclear weapons work, "the progress achieved over the last year will retrench and economic isolation will increase," he said. A new phase in the struggle on the peninsula has begun, "which will rely far more on diplomatic and economic measures, yet still conducted under the umbrella of a strong defense." RisCassi believes strong defense and U.S. commitment to Korean peace have allowed the situation to reach its current stage of peaceful discussions. "As long as both the Republic of Korea and North Korea believe that U.S. forces are absolutely committed, the South can confidently continue a flexible diplomatic approach," he said. "As long as North Korea believes military actions against South Korea won't succeed, the chances for a peaceful outcome remain strong."
